I am now 40. I have never had a period without HRT. I was 18 by the time I saw an OB. At that time I was diagnosed with Primary Ovarian Failure. The doctors ran the autoimmune test that were available at the time. Nothing came back positive so the cause of the Primary Ovarian Failure was listed as unknown autoimmune disease. I was told at about age 28 by a Reproductive Endocrinologist that IVF with egg donor was my only option. We were raising two foster children at the time and bringing a baby into the family would not have been save due to their mental health problems.
We were saving up for DE/ IVF once the foster children were raised. Then we were hit by The Great Recession. Long story short we did our first DE/ IVF this year right after I turned 40. It failed. I found out at 37 that I have Celiac Disease and Thyroid Antibodies at 38. I was gluten free for 2.5 years prior to our doing the IVF. I have never been told that I couldn't carry. I've seen 3 Reproductive Endocrinologist. I have a small uterus too. However I have not been told that it was developed to a certain age.
Once my DE/IVF failed my husband and I decided to make sure there was not another problem. We found Dr. Joanne Kwak-Kim in Chicago. She is a Reproductive Immunologist and I had an appointment with her a week ago. She gave me more information than I have ever received from a doctor. First your immune system can disrupt your hormone system. If I was in my 20's Dr. Kwak-Kim would try to get me to ovulate with my eggs. Since I'm now 40 it is very unlikely that it would work. I am now looking at getting my immune system under control before I do another DE/ IVF.
From what I have learned about Celiac Disease it is not uncommon for development to be arrested. I wonder if this is what has caused all of our infertility problems. I asked Dr. Kwak and she said they are just starting research on Celiac and infertility. My appointment was 4 hours with Dr. Kwak. She said my ovaries appear to be underdeveloped instead of old. I was always told that my ovaries were old an had no eggs. I just found out this year that I do have eggs. They just are not maturing.
My recommendation is that you should see Dr. Kwak. She is a leading researcher in the field of infertility and high risk pregnancy. this the first time I have found any woman with my same symptoms. I hope that everyone will continue to share our stories so maybe we can help others.
Dr. Kwak is at Rosalind Franklin University. I will get all of my labs back in a couple of more weeks. I will update you. Another great resource is yahooimmnuologysupport group. Also read Dr. Alan Beers book Is My Body Baby Friendly. It helps you understand immunology and the effects on the reproductive system.
Everyone best wishes in your baby journey!!!
Charlie- I will be posting more information on this link as I learn more. Do you have Celiac disease or Thyroid antibodies? You may want to be tested for these conditions. They can be an underlining cause. It is not well researched, so it is a hypothesis.
Hi, I too was diagnosed with POF at 15yo. Do they have any idea what the cause is? They don't know with me...just how I was born. My uterus is really small from lack of estrogen so we are moving forward with an egg donor and a surrogate.
Hi there,
I too was diagnosed at 15 with POF and primary amenorrhea. We are moving forward with donor eggs and a surrogate. I am always looking for new tests, surgery options, treatments, etc to expand my small uterus or figure out why this happened.
helo,
i too have a similar problem. my periods started when i was 12 years old. i had normal menstruation for a year and only missed one month then my periods were gone. its been 9 years now and i have not seen my menstruation. the doctor said i have a small uterus. it is suposed to be the size of my fist but it is the size of my finger tips put together. it just gets hard sometime when i see my friends buying sanitary pads or wearing them coz i don't remember what that feels like. it feels great to know that there is some1 with a similar problem, but sad at the same time that there is no information about this any where. the only thing i get from the net is that i can have a baby if someone else carries my baby and thats ifi ovulate. i do not one anyone to carry my baby. i wana do that by my self. i still hold on that one day i will.

I'm 19 but when i was 15 i got the news that my uterus is smaller than the normal size for my age. when i was younger than that, i was molested. I have never had a period but one time while in grade school i had spotting and that was it. But i guess its nice to know that there are others like me. my friends dont know but i feel like they do secretively, i sometimes feel odd. i have kinda accepted that i cannot have a child because i have already planned to adopt but in a way it still wont be the same. i love children and am still trusting in the Lord, so that is my advice to everyone in this situation room. I was 13 years old when i got my period and i got it a few times then it stopped and never came again. i m now 21 i got tested many times and taken many pills. over the years the pills made my emotions sky rocket some made me feel sick. i told the person who was closes to me who i thought was my friend my health problem and cause of the pills my moods would change. what she said to me one day "your on some next level period" just speechless at least i know i m not alone. i have decided to not take anymore pills and let nature take its course even those i get depressed time to time. it is nice to read about all these great people who chose to share their story.
