Vacuum Aspiration/Dilation and Curetlage (D&C): up to 14 weeks after LMP
This surgical abortion is done early in the pregnancy up until 14 weeks after the woman’s last menstrual period. The cervical muscle is stretched with dilators (metal rods) until the opening is wide enough to allow the abortion instruments to pass into the uterus. Laminaria (thin sticks derived from plants) may also be inserted several hours before the procedure. A hand held syringe is attached to tubing that is inserted into the uterus and the baby is torn from the uterine wall and suctioned out into a collection bottle. If the baby is larger, the doctor will insert a loop-shaped steel knife into the uterus connected to the tubing of the suction machine. The knife cuts the baby’s body into pieces and the suction pulls the parts out of the uterus. The placenta is also scraped off the uterine wall with the knife
Dilation and Evacuation (D&E): 15 to 18 weeks after LMP
This surgical abortion is done during the second trimester of pregnancy. Because the developing fetus doubles in size between the eleventh and twelfth weeks of pregnancy, the body of the fetus is too large to be broken up by suction and will not pass through the suction tubing. In this procedure, the cervix must be opened wider than in a first trimester abortion. This is done by inserting laminaria a day or two before the abortion. After opening the cervix, the doctor twists and tears away parts of the baby with forceps. This continues until the entire baby is removed from the womb. The baby’s head needs to be crushed so it can be removed. The bones in the skull are so hard that they could cut the cervix upon removal.
Dilation and Extraction (D&X): 19 to 20 weeks after LMP
Also know as Partial-birth Abortion, this procedure takes three days. During the first two days, the cervix is dilated and medication is given for cramping. On the third day, the woman receives medication to start labor. After labor begins, the abortion doctor uses ultrasound to locate the baby’s legs. Grasping a leg with forceps, the doctor delivers the baby up to the baby’s head. At this point, the baby is alive and in most cases, the baby is able to survive outside the mother’s womb at the age of 23 weeks. Next, scissors are inserted into the base of the skull and the scissors blades are spread apart to create an opening. A suction catheter is placed into the opening and the brain is sucked out. The skull collapses and the baby is removed

Hi Carifairy,
You know, I just wanted to let you know. I know that no matter what side of this issue WE women are one, all of us, it is always a subject matter that CAN cause a great deal of tension and possible heated arguments. Thank you for keeping "unheated" and presenting your facts as you know them. I appreciate it lots.
I wasnt able to present my "researches" until now. I fell and suffered a MAJOR injury to my foot which could have resulted in amputation of my foot. So I recovering.
You know, the choices that all of us make, no matter what choices we are faced with, should never give any other human being an "excuse" to judge another. Compassion and true care for another is priceless.
Thanks Carifairy for your "calm"...could not think another word.

I am very calm =)
D&X is used in certain circumstances, hydrocephalus is one of the biggest cases in which it is used.
A lot of women that abort for fetal deformity wish to have an intact fetus, this helps with closure and healing, and with this illness the head is 3-5 times larger than a full term infant.
For "Birth control" abortions, which is the easiest term to use, as it explains everything, D&E is the method used =)

Hi Again,
You mentioned Hydrocephalus. Interestingly enough, I have a good friend who had her first baby, and she had hydrocephalus. Although it was an issue at first, apparently the pediatric doctors have been able to help her through it, Im not sure exactly how extensive it was. She is a bit considered on the "slow" side of their learning curve, but shes well.
I had another girlfriend, who had a baby who had SERIOUS hydrocephalus (you reminded me of this when you mentioned the mom wanting to hold the baby for closure), and she carried full term, had her labor, and was able to hold her baby and be with him for about 9 hours before he died. She said he was just beautiful, but was relieved to be able to look at him and hold him in his last little moments.

Many women do not wish to carry to term, YET they do wish for an intact baby to hold.
If you truly would like to know how an abortion is done, why not check out abortion clinic websites?
They have detailed info on how the abortion is performed, VERT DETAILED info, as a matter of fact.
This is a good website. Many PL 'ers state that abortion clinics do not explain things thoroughly..
drhern.com
You have to do all the rest yourself, as we are not supposed to link.
They detail abortion procedures that are used, and he is a well known late abortion provider.
Thanks to medical technology, women are able to find out in many cases how 'slow' their child may be.
There can be countless abnormalities in Hydrocephalus.
I believe it a womans choice to decide what to do when faced with fetal anomaly.

ok not meaning to be rude but most teenagers will and carry out the active of sex in there teen years it doesn't mean they were raped or it was incest.. but there are alot of teen mothers out there that wasn't raped and didn't want the baby but didn't abort... it is a proven facted that abortion can leaned problems in later on pregnancys so how would that make you feel you get pregnant and believe abortion is a birth control and pretty much kill your chances of having others ... i am not for abortion it is just a murder of an life... and i believe in birthcontrol and want not... because that stops the chancings of oval. so that means the baby wouldn't even be able to form let alone be killed it just kills the sperm.... abortion is a murder to an innocent life it didn't choice who the mother or father is so why make it suffer... if you were raped you have that baby as proof you can keep it till birth and get that man locked away and give it to someone who can't have children...

My mom had 2 abortions, and had 3 healthy children.
Abortion does not affect fertility, it is the severe infection that *can* happen that causes problems. Severe infections from abortion is EXTREMELY rare, thanks to ANTIBIOTICS.
Read info from the CDC.

you should be a little more open minded about this...you don't know some of the reasons why women have abortions. I had one when i was 16 years old. I wanted the baby to but I had no choice. My parents were forcing me to have one, I ran away just so they wouldn't make me but even my boyfriend at the time didn't want to help me. So there I was 16 and pregnant, no where to go and have this baby. I had no money, I was in highschool and I didn't have a job. I had to go back home, but in order to stay i had to do as my parents wanted. At the time I didn't know about all the help that I could have recieved. It's something I live with everyday of my life and i'm truly sad over it there isn't a day I don't think about it. I can say that if God ever blesses me with the second chance to be a mother I will have the baby no matter what anyone else wants. It's ok to share your opinion with others but wishing death to others is just as wrong as you think women are for having abortions.

Abortion is the placing of blame on & execution of an innocent human-being because of a man and womans own irresponsible actions or the actions of an evil person. Abortion is a selfish choice that puts to death a viable human being in exchange for a life time of what if's. Abortion is murder because killing a human is murder and humanity begins with conception and ends with old age. How can scientists claim to know how the universe began when they are so wrong about when life begins. It is so very obvious. Humans MUST be protected until their organs are able to function on their own - we ALL went though the "mommy's tummy" phase - it was designed that way or we wouldnt exist - but there are special people (the elite) who want to define worth based on birth. But those who know better and think higher know that each life is precious and has immeasurable worth in the eyes of it's Creator. Conception is a miracle. One day they will see the light.

Hi scaredteen92,
Just some information that I thought you would find interesting.
Abortions in the United States for rape, incest, to protect the life of the mother, or to void a defective fetus comprise less than five percent of all abortions. The rest are performed just for convenience. And we're talking about one million abortions a year
An important scientific gathering was convened in October 1967 in Washington D.C. to decide this question. Medical professionals, biological scientists and authorities in the fields of law, ethics and the social sciences gathered together to settle the matter. This was the First International Conference on Abortion. The first major question considered was this: "When does human life begin?" And this is an important question, for we all know that we should not kill human beings. But when does an unborn child become a human being? At conception when the two cells unite, at birth forty weeks later, or at some point between the two?
Here was the decision of this group (composed of biochemists, professors of obstetrics and gynecology, geneticists, etc.):
"The majority of our group could find no point in time between the union of sperm and egg, or at least the blastocyst stage [shortly after fertilization, when twinning might occur] and the birth of the infant at which point we could say that this was not a human life. The changes occurring between implantation, a six-weeks embryo, a six months fetus, a one week-old child, or a mature adult are merely stages of development and maturation."—First International Conference on Abortion, Washington B.C., October 1967

You know, I have to say, I went to the dr. hern website, and though it does contain some facts, I have to say that it is GARBAGE. It uses alot of medical terms, that sound real "pretty" to those who would not know otherwise. I had a friend who was told "tooth and nail" that her BABY had the signs and blood tests of downs syndrome. She didnt care, she gave birth, and guess what......??? The baby had NO downs or otherwise. I dont understand the "spin" some of these doctors do.
Also, I was reading some posts to a young girl who had become pregnant at 14. Yes, this is an early age. No disagreement there. MOST of the posts that I read just post after post "shot" negatives and what ifs and "oh, how are you going to be able to do.....such and such and such".
The point is, she should make her own choice. If she is going to be having sex, and taking on that HUGE responsibility, she should be able to understand the possibilities that go with it hand in hand.
In my humble opinion, I believe that by posing these "what if" questions to her, and the absolute negativity to her, that one is basically telling her that she doesnt "have a brain" to think these things herself. If you dont present facts, offer her LOTS of possibile places where she can research and find options and answers HERSELF..... I SAID HERSELF....... wouldnt you just consider that enabling her to NOT take resposibility for things, AND learn and grow from such a HUGE lesson?
It is NOT impossible, at such an early age, to "navigate" through" these problems !!! By saying some of these things, are you assuming that you already "know" her and that she is going to fail?
To some in the world, this would be the "end of the world"...... but to others, this would be a opportunity to grow that she would benefit from. DONT SHORT CHANGE THE YOUNG LADY by throwing negatives ONLY at her, I am sure she is well aware of consequences and/or possible problems, she wouldnt be worried if she wasnt, right?
Lets give out some information so that she can strengthen and educate HERSELF, and not become a "statistic", but an overcoming young lady. Its not impossible, unless a person has already "written it off" to be. Think about it.

Otherwise it can ALWAYS be a false neg or positive.

Hi Carifairy,
I had a couple of questions for you.
If a poster wants to send us a PM how do we go about doing that or activating that?
What are your thoughts on Planned Parenthood?
I wanted you to know, though we may disagree on some issues, your heart is a BIG one as I have seen through some of your posts. You seem to be quite a neat person.
Many blessings to you young lady

There is a little "Send private message" link under everyones "Name"/Handle.
For some reason, I am unable to access my PM's through any of my 'member services', but I get them in my email. I opted to have 'alterts' sent to me through email.
PP has two different "healthcare" options.
"Health centers" which do not provide abortion, only provide STD testing, birth control, mammograms, and other gyn related care.
Their "Abortion clinics" actually do the aboriton services.
I am a fan of the health centers, because they help so many low income women obtain services that they may not have access to otherwise.
PP abortion clinics..I am NOT a fan of.
I work in a private clinic, so we offer prenatal care 'plans', and care for both pregnant women and women that choose abortion.
We are not 'herdy', and we take time with each and every woman that we see.
I think that PP is so popular because it is well known, women do not know that there are better options out there.
I think that because PP can be so herdy and 'clinic like', that they do not take the time to CARE for people.
I do recommend their health centers, but not their abortion centers. I think that they lack the extra quality of care.
We actually talk to women having the abortion. We ask if anyone is forcing her to do it. (Minors are given extra special attention as far as this goes)
If anyone is forcing or coercing a woman into the abortion, we explain her rights(minors), and that legally she can make any decision that she wants about her body.
