I have been using Vitamin C creams on my face forever with no problem, then about 2 weeks ago I started taking 1000mg supplement and eating more citrus fruits and wow, I am breaking out like a kid going into puberty but they also a little itchy so maybe half acne half rash,no needless to say,I am cutting out supplements unless I coming down with a cold...
Hi, my son who is 12 also has a vitamin c allergy. He breaks out in hives, gets a fever, his ears, nose and eyes turn deep fire red, migraines and starts to vomit. He has suffered with this since he was 1 yrs old and I have taken him to all sorts of specialist as well. So he just avoids it and he does better. If by chance he it's something with vitamin c in it he says he feels a tingle on his tongue and he has to take a benadryl as soon as possible.
I’ve been allergic to Vitamin C since I was a baby – the doctor prescribed multi-vitamins when I was a few months old as a health booster, and I became so ill I nearly died. The medical profession would not accept my mother’s concern that it was the vitamins making me ill. The lining of my intestines was actually being stripped away. Eventually Mum stopped giving me the vitamins and I recovered.
As an adult, it took me many years to determine that it was the Vitamin C that caused the problem; and even now, at 57 years old, if I have too much (natural Vitamin C) the problem returns. My whole insides becomes painful and I get sores inside my mouth.
I do manage ok by only having small amounts of natural foods with Vitamin C. I can eat say 1 tomato a day; an orange once a week etc.
But I can’t tolerate Ascorbic acid that is in any processed foodstuff.
I’m so glad I found this site – I had previously never heard that other people have this problem.
I want to add to the posts below. I am allergic to vitamin C as well. My reactions are completely different. My neck will swell on the outside, it will turn bright red, it will become itchy, and then, in cases of too much C, my throat will start to close making it hard to swallow. All the doctors that I have been too look at me like I am ignorant but I took several months to actually pinpoint what caused the reactions and it is not just oranges, lemons, limes, pineapples, kiwis, or other fruits and vegetables that do it to me but cough medicine or lozenges with vitamin C as well or anything with vitamin C in it.
To all those who hear that you are crazy or mental because you think you are allergic to vitamin C, take heart, you are not alone.

You are not alone. I am allergic to vitamin C... The onset started a year ago and I just was just informed after going to many specialist. Now I am working on reprograming my food intake...bummer
I have had a problem with vitamin C for years. Every time I start taking but C supplements I develope a cold or what I thought was a cold. I have tried it several times over the years with different brands. I just tried it starting a few days ago and today I have a horrible itchy eyes, stuffy nose allergy/sinus problems. Every doc I ever ask just shrug there shoulders and blow it off. I wish I knew why and cannot seem to find a resource. I do not get nauseous or hives just cold/allergy symptoms.
It looks like constant doses of Vit C could mess with the body's cortisol levels (cortisol is used to dampen immune reactions). See https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7919130. We really don't need much Vit C to prevent scurvy, so if we're eating a lot of fresh produce, supplements are probably overdoses. Who knows? Maybe the rise in autoimmune diseases is linked to Vitamin C being added to everything.

I used to take Vitamin C to boost my immune system but now when I take it (even 500 Mg) I get an upper respiratory infection, eyes burn, runny nose, and feel sick. How can this be?
Your vitamin C allergy, like mine is due to a mold food allergy. It has to do with the way man made vitamin is produced. It's fermented. You're likely allergic to b-12 (man made) and citric acid regardless of it being natural or man made, if you're like me. My connective tissue is so freeing from it. I eat tons of kale and potatoes since I'm allergic to all fruit. I hope this helps you figure it out.
Sounds like a latent virus. The vitamin C is triggering it. All of the C reactions I have encountered clinically have been "detox" reactions caused by stimulating the immune system. I am sure it is possible to be truly allergic, but since it is ubiquitous in nature doesn't not seem like something that would be very survivable. Kinda like an iodine "allergy". I would suggest you find a competent acupuncturist in your area. Mention the formula Xiao Chai Hu tang and this post and see if they can't help you.
Vitamin C allergies are real and I have one. I'm surprised that you couldn't come up with anything on the internet, I did. So, apparently vitamin c in its natural form (citrus fruit etc) is not a problem. Supplements and additives in face creams (L absorbing acid) is what causes the reaction. I started taking vitamin c supplements in preparation for an upcoming surgery and had a reaction on my eyes. Red, itchy, flaky blisters on the outside corners of my eyes! Ughhh so uncomfortable! At least now I know and it explains the milder reactions I was having to my vitamin c face creams.
I am 27 now. When I was 14 I got a horrible rash (wich was later diagnosed as urticaria) after eating too much kiwifruit. The tests, however, showed that I was sensitive to other foods as well, but vitamin c was the worst, I even ended up at the ER a couple of times and spent some time in the hospital. It lastet months. I wasn't allowed to eat most of the foods, I couldn't sleep because of the hives and I was constantly on medication, which only prevented further visits to the ER. At last I heard of herbal remedy, a tee called Tahebo, that should improve the immune system. I drank it every day for a couple of months (still being on a diet and medicines) and finally the rashes disappeared.I am 100% positive that it was the tee that helped, because I have tried a lot of stuff before but nothing helped. After my rash was gone, I also remember not being sich for at least a year. Now, after almost 13 years urticaria is back. I am drinking the tee again hoping it will have the same effect. I can imagine that most of you have already tried a lot of things and are sceptical towards alternative medicine, but it wouldn't hurt to try....
I had a friend that was anemic and they couldn't resolve the problem. He cut back on vitamin e and started taking black strap molasses, as it contains a lot of iron. First time his iron levels ever increased.
Ascorbic acid is not the same as natural vitamin C. I argued with a doctor about this. My body tells me they aren't. I get explosive diarrhea within an hour after eating and have been in some awful situations. I also react to polysorbates. I can't eat any fresh fish where I live br cause it's shipped here in ice treated with ascorbic acid. Have had to read labels for years because of it. It's in a lot of foods. I can eat any fresh fruit with no issues.
Take a benadryl see if the information goes down. That should give you a start
