Any update? My daughter is experiencing this and we are scared out of our minds!

I have this happen several time a month. It is scary for sure. I force myself to sit up straight as possible and push my tongue up to the roof of my mouth which blocks any more liquid, etc. to go down my throat. Then, slowly try to get a breath. I takes me up to five minutes to settle down. Just try not to panic... panic makes it worse.

Talk to your Dr about acid reflux. Sounds weird but something to do with acid getting into larynx.

Hello I've been suffering with this problem for about two years I noticed ever since i gained weight it would happen also noticed if I have a terrible hangover the next day of the hung over it would definitely happen. I read that your voice box closes the pipe down and you cant breath. your brain but then initially wake you up because you cannot get any air in once you're up I found that if I stand up and start walking around and drinking water even though I can't breath it will open up my voice box I then will turn on my stove and heat up some hot water and breath in the steam which will loosen up the mucus on and get me cough everything off.

I just woke up this way... Happens over my life . I am 34 117lbs... I do not snore, etc... So I don't think I have sleep apnea all the time but I do think what happens to us is the same thing that happens to ppl that have it, ours is only during certain times. Mine was bad tonight.. Couldn't get airway to open.... Shaking my husband out of his sleep... Finally it opened up... My heart racing.. Eyes watering.. So scary..... I have told the dr before and they just shake their head and say. "I don't know"... I also have a problem swallowing medium sized pills and food sometimes... Not sure if we may have a small hernia or something in there we don't know about and sometimes it can enlarge during certain periods if time and during relaxed sleep help to cut off airway .... I am going to force some dr to listen to me and figure this out or I seriously think I will die in my sleep.... It's 3:30 am and I am on hear researcing just like you to find anything that sounds like what happens to me. Hope to get answers...

sunshinette -- I have had very similar episodes -- waking up not being able to breathe. With
me it was related to constipation and when I got my bowels moving more often it went away.
Try taking stool softener tabs every day for a while. Your colon will be less loaded up and
there will be less pressure on your diaphragm. I hope this helps. Jason

same problem. This is the first time with this choking and not being able to breathe. Will call dr in morning and try to get an appt. New insurance so I don't know. I also have problems at times swallowing food/pills. One dr told me it was acid reflux but I never have any other symptoms of acid reflux. Have you gotten an answer yet?
