I had my gallbladder removed 5 mths ago, at the same time as having my adrenal gland removed. Since then I have suffered with diarrhoea and stomach cramps, and heavy throbbing pain just under my right shoulder. I have been back to my GP and she has referred me back to my surgeon for further tests. He says he thinks the most likely cause is a trapped gallstone in the bile duct. Apparently this is quite a common occurence, and something that is often not picked up during the initial surgery. I suggest anyone having such problems refers themselves back to the doctor for further tests.

I had my gallbladder removed on February 23, 2007. I have been having severe back pain for a few days. I never had back pain prior to the surgery. I cannot get relief. Do you have any answers for me? Would so appreciate your feedback.

I had my gall bladder out three weeks ago, seen the surgeon 10 days following the op and he was happy that all went wel. Five days after seeing him i started sufferng sever pain in the upper back am not impressed at all! I feel a bit better after reading all the other posts my hubby keeps telling me to go back to the doctor he thought i might have had a chest infection, but now I see that this is probably related to my op. I know they removed my gall bladder but never said whether or not they removed the stone that was stuck in the bile duct. Have a follow up appointment with own GP on friday hopefully he can give me some answers. Night time is the worst for the back pain it keeps me awake off and on all night. It feels like averything has siezed up. Hope things are on the improve for you all.

hi there all. i had gallbladder removed july 2006, it went well and i recovered quickly. i would say about 4 months later i started to have pain again in the back area and some in front right quadrant too. nothing bad. 1or 2 on a 1-10 scale. the doc told me it could be a number of things , got a liver test and that was ok., she thought it might be a stone that formed after the surgery, but once i started eating right, being really careful about my choices food and drink , the pain went away - completely. its been about 2 months now and the pain came back that other day. same as before.. but i have been eating poorly again, making bad decisions etc.. greasy fatty stuff... so i feel i brought this on my self.. i was doing really well being careful etc and when i let my guard down and reverted back to my bad eating it came back. the liver produces tons of bile and i think that causes the nausea and also is needed more for really fatty foods. when i stick to healthy foods, veggies , fruit, subway sandwiches,etc... im fine. I still may go in to dr to see what she thinks and who knows may have some tests just to rule out anything serious. but please eat healthy. i know its a small thing in a world where we rely on drugs to cure everything, but it works. your system will start to recover and you will feel so much better, there is also natural things you can take, papaya ive heard is excellent. take care of yourselves . john

I just had my surgey 3 days ago. I was sitting on the bed saturday morning and felt a sharp painin my back that lasted for about half an hour. I couldn't move. I thought it was a result of a prior back problem, but after reading the posting I think it is a result of my surgey.

My boyfriend is 22 years old, he had his GB removed last year Feb, ever since he has battled with a pain on his left side of his stomach. He also has been in hospital 3 times after the op with kidney stones- (they keep coming back- especially in his left kidney) It is sore when he eats, when he exercises and if he drinks alcohol. He has changed his diet to help with the digestiion of food. But the pain is getting worse and worse. He has gone for X-Rays, scopes, & CT scans. He is referred from one specilaist to another (Urologists & Gastro), and no one knows what is wrong with him. Please he cant carry on like this- please will someone help or give advice.

I had my gallbladder removed on 3/29/2007. My surgery came with complications. I started leaking bile after my surgery so they had to do a second procedure to stop the leak. I was in the hospital for 5 days. I'm feeling fine right now. The only pain I'm having is the weird back pain. I've been taking motrin and tylenol. The pain doesn't prohibit me from functioning normally throughout the day but I was just wondering what's the cause of it. My surgeon said he didn't know what it could be and not to worry since the pain isn't severe.
Glad I found this site. I thought I was crazy too...

I had my gall bladder removed 3/23/07 and I'm have back pain and it goes up to my shoulder. I also have a burning feeling inside on the right. I thought I was going to feel so much better and I'm a little disappointed.
I get really tired in the afternoon. I'm not sure whether to go back to
the doctor b/c they sometimes act like it's all in your head. Hopefully after
a few more weeks, I'll be feeling better, but from these other postings, I'm
not sure. I am on Prevacid for acid reflux.

hiya to all, i had my gall bladder removed 10 weeks ago and i am still in pain!! The back pain is sometimes so bad i want to cry, on the right side just under my ribcage, sometimes at the front like a stabbing stitch. This never goes away.!! I am also suffering (according to the hospital when i went back cos the pain was so bad) acid reflux, terrible cramping pain in the same place i used to have my gall bladder attacks, lower part of the breastbone, this has me doubled over. I constantly have to keep swallowing as well, my mouth seems to fill with excess saliva! I was told to take gaviscon which i never used before surgery, now i have to take it every day. I cannot blame any particular food for these attacks, it seems to be quite random and can wake me in the night, even drinking a cup of tea will give me pain. I am very depresed dover this, i am back to work in 4 days and still feel quite ill, tired and fed up with the whole thing!!

I had my gallbladder removed on 1/30/07 I am 22 years old and have since continued to have pain. The pain right after surgery was unbearable and I was told by my surgeon that this is not normal and he made me come back for a quick followup and I was told everything is normal. I then started to feel a lot better I still experieced a stabbing pain on my right side when I sat in the same position or over stretched, but recently within the past three weeks I have been experieincing horrible gallbladder attack type pain in my upper right side and into my back whever I eat or drink anything it seems. I also feel nauseous and it gets so bad sometimes my right arm will start to hurt. It feels worse then when I had the gallbladder. When it was removed they did not find any stones only scarring on the gallbladder and it took them 6 months to diagnose the gallbladder in the first place. I am having an endoscopy done, but from the looks of the other posts that may not find the issue.
Any suggestions?

i HAD MY GALL BLADDER REMOVED fEBRUARY 07, & had to see my surgeon after 2 months bec of the pain I had under my rt ribs and back. he ordered ultrasound & blood tests to find out if there are stones in my bile duct. Result came negative so i was referred back to my gastroenterologist and was told that they did not see anything wrong buut he believes it is pain caused by my fibromyalgia. I was given muscle relaxant. I have been taking it for 2 wks now & i still have this disturbing nagging pain. I happen to talk and compare our experiences with my co worker in the hospital, 1 cna & 1 nurse both of them had the gall bladder removed and they have the same problems. This is what we get from having the gall bladder removed. I have friends who talked to other people and have exactly the same problems, pain under the ribs, back pain, constipating 1 day and another day diarrhea. It seems that we have to face the consequence. I will research more and find out about this problem of ours.

I understand exactly how you are feeling! I had GB surgery 01/31 and it is now June 16th and I am in severe back pain. I've had CXR, US, MRI, CT, blood work, been to PT, TENS unit, chiropractor, epidural, back specialist, pain clinic and just this last week I had an MRCP which was normal, like all the other tests. My doctor said there was nothing else he could do. I am taking Lortab (pain med) which helps me with my pain. Although it doesn't take all my pain away at least I am able to still work and take care of my family.
I do feel like I am going crazy! and for the last 5 months I felt like I was the only one with this pain. it was a little comforting to see this message board. I do hope

Hi, I hope this information offers hope to some of the ladies suffering extreme pain. Around 6 months ago my wife (46yrs old) started to have abdominal pain. She was given antacid tabs etc, nothing helped. The pain got worse and more frequent and was now accompanied by severe vomiting which usually came after the pain had built to almost unbearable levels. She ultimately had her gall bladder removed as the ultasound scan revealed disease of the gall bladder. Stones basically.
1 operation later and we find ourselves in the middle of a nightmare. Same pain as before, but more frequent and worse. She cried it was so bad. The vomiting was violent.
I researched the net and was convinced she had sphincter oddi syndrome.
She was passed from doctor to doctor with no joy. After 1 particularly bad attack, and by now she was finding it difficult to breathe during an attack, I took her to A&E and refused to leave until they admitted her and diagnosed the problem.
1 MRI scan later they discovered some loose stones had made their way into the bile duct and become trapped. She will have them removed next week and we assume all will be well after that.
I'll keep you posted.
Please, if you are suffering extreme pain as my wife was, insist they keep you in hospital and give you every possible blood test and scan available. Be rude if you have to. The nicer you are, I find they assume it can't be that bad and dismiss you easily.
You are entitled to a cure. It's your right, not a privilege.
I truly hope this helps a little. If you are suffering...there is a reason and there is a cure. Insist they find both.
