I had my gallbladder removed in January of 08 and my stomach is just as worse as before having it removed. It has been a nightmare. I am now having accupunture done as a last resort. I sure hope it helps. I have horrible heartburn all the time... And I also have a ulcer which does not help. If i had known about these awful side effects of the gallbladder being removed i would have tried something different.

Today i am 5 days post gall bladder surgery. I have an awful pain just under my right ribs and around to my back. I cant sleep on either side my back only. Feels like I traded one pain for another. Sny ideas?

I had my gallbladder removed on Friday 13th of Feb and have been experiencing some pretty bad back pains very similar to the pains I had with my gallbladder, just gone to the doctors and he's explained that its to do with blood being "loose" and travelling around my body which is, as he explained it, perfectly normal for that kind of surgery.
He has said that the pain will be around for a few more days until my body re-absorbs the blood and this is proved by the fact that changing sleeping positions can sometimes change the location of the pain and when lying on my tummy (which is hard considering the surgery!) the pain almost vanishes.
I would suggest to anyone experiencing similar pains to either bring it up at any post-op appointment you might have or see your doctor, even just for peace of mind :-)

As much as I don't wish this pain on anyone else, it is comforting to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. I had my gallbladder removed on 1/30/09 after almost 2 years of dealing with it. I had tried everything suggested to me, including a cleanse with EVOO. This was my 6th surgery in 20 months, so I'm no stranger to pain. But now it's to the point where I'm struggling to breathe because of the pain. I was experiencing more pain than I thought I should in my abdomen 1 1/2 weeks after my surgery and at my post-op appointment but the surgeon told me it was a blood clot healing from the inscision in the muscle and to use heat with an NSAID. That seemed to work for that pain, but the back pain won't go away for anything.
I didn't have any stones, or at least that's what I was told in the ER 10 days prior to surgery. It was only after a HIDA scan prescribed by my GP that I was even referred to a surgeon.
I have gone back to work for three days, but I sit at a desk for 8 hours, and sitting seems to aggravate it more than anything else, and the pain killers (darvocet) that have been prescribed for me don't seem to do much. This is also a new job, and I have already used up 3 of the 6 weeks of LOA I'm allowed in the first 12 months of employment and had to fight with the company that approves short term disability payouts, because they only allow for 7 days with cholecystectomy... yah right.
Should I go to a new doctor, or stick with the same one? Or, should I go to a GI specialist? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Oh dear, my doc who said the above, was wrong. I was fine for a few days but had to go to Accident & Emergency after the most exruciating pain in my life (and after 10 years of gallbladder pain, I do mean excruciating!). Was told I may have stones still in my system, was sent home and returned a day later with Jaundice and other noticable signs of liver damage. Had an endoscopy a week or so later and they found a stone lodged in my duodenum.
The pain I had was so severe and felt exactly like a gallbladder attack, if you experience that sort of pain you should get to hospital asap, a blood test may be a good idea to kickstart your doc, I'm sure if there was a problem it would show up somewhere?
I hope you get better soon, I wouldnt wish the last couple of months on anyone!

I had my gb removed 3 weeks ago and have had pain almost everyday after I eat. It does not matter how bland or spicy the food I still have abdominal pain that radiates to my back. I went to my GI and he ordered a HIDA scan to check for leakage in the bile duct(none0. Then a CT scan nothing major just some fuzzy spots around where the gb was. He is treating it as a slight infection. I will be on antibiotics for 10 days, hopefully this will kick it out. This has taken over my life and I am going insane.

you must go back to your surgeon & make him realize the pain & discomfort you are having... if you are getting sweats with your pain then you surely have a true physical trauma occurring internally... it sounds as though you have a LODGED g.b.stone that was missed in surgery & probably hiding in or behind one of your sutured ducts... I'M HAVING THE SAME POST-OP PROBLEM & i see my surgeon this week. for me it's only been 2 weeks and after reading all these back pain testimonials the only patients who got releif are the ones that were persistent & eventually THRU MORE UNTRASOUNDS & TESTING their surgeons found a gall stone left behind in a duct!! hiding & sutured inside!!! It looks like a simple removal solved their problem!! i never dreamed i would find my problem on the internet... i surely cannot live with this pain 2 or 5 months... if & when i find my source of continued upper right back pain i will certainly post my results.

I had my gallbladder out april 10 along with a benign liver mass to which it was adhered. I am now having the same pain in my right back and under right ribs as before surgery. Also terrible burning in my stomach in spite of taking Nexium. It just started this week and I have calls in to surgeon. Seeing a GI doctor but not for 2 weeks. It is alarming to me that this seems to be such a common problem. Why can't they find a cause? I had no stones so do not think that is the problem.

I had my gallbladder removed last August 2008. I felt better for a week. Then, the craziness started. The symptoms came back on my right side-back only. So, I had a MRI, CT, etc. to check my Kidneys, Liver, etc. and nothing was found. What's interesting is I had the "Gallbladder Pain" symptoms for two years when finally after numerous CT's they found gallstones and some kind of fluid in my Galbladder. So, after two years of living with this "mystery pain" they took out my Gallbladder. Now, the pain from my back (right side) has moved and I have pains often now in my back on the left side, but the doctors can't find anything still. Has anyone had this problem? Also, I started out with Thyroid problems and the Gastro issues started later. Can anyone relate? Please help. This pain is killing me and I am tired of having to wait two to five years for the pain to get worse before getting the help I need.

I have some advice, Its normal for your back to cramp up to protect your gut . Go to a good no BS chrpractor and they will tell you right away which muscles are cramping and will loosen them up for you. After this use a waste belt to keep your back warm ( I use a thin foam pad to help)If you need more help with your back cramps you can get a TENs unit that WILL stop all or most future back cramps . So now you have a 90 to 95 % cure. N:ot too bad huh? Write DR Jon ; at _[removed]_ ..., I feel your pain not anymore tho!

Totally can relate. Thyroid and Gallbladder and Mono (ebv) all at the same time. As far as the pain where the gallbladder was and the pain in the right side of the back and stomach nausea/ulcer pain, I can totally relate. So far 9months of labs changing with no treatment just attempts to diagnois. Oh and alot of money pain, lol. The only comfort I can suggest is adapt every day if not every hour as needed. Keep chasing the goal of relief and hopefully we can learn what the doctors have not. Best of luck everyone. :-)

My initial symptoms were abdomen pain that absolutely felt like a pulled abdominal muscle. Later on I began to feel more centralized pressure under my right rib cage and back pain that seemed to begin just about where my ribcage met my spine on the right side continuing up into my shoulder.
I did not have gallstones, but was diagnosed with a dysfunctional gallbladder. Tests after laparoscopic surgery confirmed that my gallbladder was inflamed.
My story seems similar to others described except for the fact that 5 months later I feel completely normal except that I am experiencing abdominal (feels like a pinch) and back pain. The surgeon mentioned before surgery that he felt my back and abdominal pain was muscular, not related to my Gail Bladder, and that I could have two separate issues.
My primary also feels the same believing that my back and abdominal pain is muscular prescribing some muscle relaxers.
I am on the fence. When I have the back pain you can feel the tightness and knots in the muscle which leads one to believe it is muscular. I plan to take the muscle relaxors and move on from there but will not rest until it either stops or someone can tell me what it is.

hi I had surgery 12 weeks ago and the pain was all over my tummy i was also the same as you i had pain all round my ribs and tummy was the same as you i looked pregnant. My doctor gave me movecol and I had to take 8 sachets to clear out bowel, this worked to clear my bowels but still my tummy was swollen. I went to the herbalist holland and barret for pepperment oil to soothe my tummy, and I was so hungry I bought two pack of panda organic liciorice comfits. my god they not only helped my hunger but they began to help the pain within three days of eating a few a day no bloating. also the pain in my ribs is gone I still get pain now and again right side where gallblader was but all the other new pain since operation has gone. I was also taking nexuim for acid and ulcers even before operation. my body is doing fine without it since licorice why has no docoter talked about this little herb before. I have ordered licorice tea and 30 bags of comfits just to have on hand and I intend to drink the tea everyday for pain inflammation and bloating. hope this helps it such an inexpensive thing and such a wonderful relief. I would say make sure its organic panda makes bags of sweets licorice and also bars but there handy for your handbag. I will let you know how i get on drinking the tea good luck kind regards

Finally I'm able to share with my family and friends and coworkers what I mean when I talk about this wierd back
pain after my gallbladder was removed. I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this, though I hope we all find relief. I never had GI problems till my second pregnancy, where I had the back pain terribly when I had heartburn, and had a severe gallbladder attack 2 weeks after giving birth. I began throwing up bile. I was rushed to the hospital where I was told it had an "atrophied" gallbladder, so I had it removed. That was one year ago. Since, I have no more throwing up bile, but strange upper back pain, and only when I smell food, or eat food, and tends to last at least an hour after eating (during digestion). It's very painful, and now getting worse over time! I think I will take the suggestions and go back to my surgeon and talk about the possibility of stones. I thought I was crazy...now I know I'm not! Thank you!
