I had my gallbladder removed on July 31, 2007 and now I'm suffering from severe backpain where my kidneys are located. Most of the pain is on the right and I also suffer from lower abd pain and in the groin. I had an x-ray and ct scan. Nothng showed up and I know I'm not crazy. At first I thought it was a bladder infection but that test came back negative. I push myself to go to work but in the process living off of pain pills. If anyone have any other directions I should take please let me know.

I have the same lower right side back pain... kind of where your kidney and liver is. I had my gall bladder removed in July '07. I swear sometimes I am having a gall bladder attack again, but no gall bladder. Further more, like someone else noted, I cannot lay on my right side for very long, or at all. Once I switch to my left side, I am ok. I have been told that the your liver still produces bile, only now, it has no where to go since your gall bladder was removed. So, now you are just experiencing the pain of bile, internally. Let's face it, haven't you ever had a stomach issue where you vomit so much, all that is left is bile? Well, hey there.. that BURNS, so it just goes to say that you would have pain when your liver produces the bile to break down the fat and grease you may have consumed. Note. EGGS.. still give me a huge "attack". Best advice? Just stay away from the bad foods. Your gall bladder is gone, but that does not really mean you can go back to the bad foods. It just means your GB won't get inflamed and poison you anymore.

HI there all! I have the darn back pain too!. I had my surgery on Monday. It is now Thursday, early morning. I have been using Theregesic for my back pain and using a body pillow behind my back, to turn me just a little to my side. What really hurts the most is trying to get up out of bed by myself. it doesnt help that I am overweight. It also hurts to cough still..Is this normal to have the pain in your stomach still, and this bad? I have heard stories of people who are up and moving around really good a day or two after the surgery..I am not one of those people.,
Thanks and take care !

It sounds as though you may have a biliary stone stuck in your common bile duct or you could have pancreatitis.
It is still possible for stones to form in your bile ducts after a gallbladder removal. The gallbladder is a storehouse for the bile that is made in the liver. If you are having pancreatitis symptoms it will be difficult to prove. Most physicians still believe that pancreatitis is caused from alcohol consumption, which can happen. I have met alot of people in the last 11-12 years with pancreatitis and a small amount have been alcohol abusers, most never know what happened. I had my gb removed 23 years ago, in 1996 I woke up sick and it never went away, I had multiple defects of the pancreas, that were birth defects. I had my pancreas removed 9-22-06 after years of being terribly ill. I would hate for anyone to have to exist the way I did. I tube fed myself in 2006 with no hope of ever eatting again, total pancreatectomy with islet cell transplantation has helped alot. I still have issues, but am better than I ever was with my diseased pancreas. When going to your Dr. ask for pancreas enzyme level check, remember that these levels don't have to be elevated for there to be a problem. Most physicians don't even know that the levels spike within 12 hours of episode, so in theory by the time you get to the Dr. the levels are on their way back down. Most with pancreatitis get diagnosed and then another physician will tell them there is nothing wrong. It shouldn't be this way, but it is. Stand your ground, don't give up. Pancreatitis isn't curable but there are treatments that can make things better.

I just had my gallbladder removed 11/25/07, and i got to say i have had a terrible time with my back from mid point to lower right side usually. I have had chills with no fever and my stomach is still so tender. my doctor says everything is ok and i am healing at a normal rate but i wonder. I can sometimes sit for up to 45 minutes and sometimes less then 10 minutes before i have to laydown. This was supposed to be an easy operation, well it's not what i expected for sure. i hope it goes away soon cause it's driving me nuts and most of the time i can't sleep. No matter how i try to get comfy i just can't. I am 41 years old and overweight so maybe that plays a part but geez......i feel like i got beat with a 2 by 4 across my back. So i understand everyone's frustration over this. I hope it gets better soon for me and everyone else.Best of luck all. %-)

Gall Bladder removed 3 weeks ago. Experiencing pain in the same area as before the emergency surgery. Called my physican, Call was never returned. Pain so bad I can not stay in bed to sleep.
It seems to be worse after I have lifted something. Nothing too heavy but it seems if I over use my arms in any one position it strikes.
I think I had an edge on this as I had the gall bladder for 73 years and had no trouble prior to surgery.

I am a fifty year old male who had my Gaul bladder removed 2 months ago. I had the less evasive belly button surgery with a total of four incisions on my abdomen 3 were very small and required no sutures only glued to close them. The one in my belly button took on one stitch that dissolved on it own. I have very little pain from the incisions. I had gas pain after the surgery for about 8 hours due to the co2 they inflated
My abdomen with. The pain was manageable with meds. I returned to work in three days and was back at full capacity in 2 weeks. I feel better now then I have in five years. My digestive system took about a week to
Get back on track and now I eat what I want. I had stones and a diseased gallbladder and this is why I was so sick. I am glad I got this done. I had no ill effects from the nighty night medicine and the whole operation only took 45 mins. I was in the hospital a total of 4 hours. It was first surgery and I was a little scared but it wasn’t near as bad as I thought.

I had my gallbladder removed 24th October 2007. Within the first 4 days of having it removed I got extreme lower back pain. I thought it was my bowels, I couldnt sit comfortably, it was awful. I took voltaren to give me a few days relief from it. Eventually i just laid in bed and massaged my lower back all across my lower spine. It went! I think it may have been from the gas that they pumped my stomach up with. I think it was trapped in some weird spot around my lower back because it has not returned! Since the operation, I have had air stuck in a few weird places too.

Hi everyone, wow all of these people suffering after having their gb out or needing to have it out!! Amazing!!!!! Mine was removed in 1993, 15 years ago and I have pain now that is far severe than I ever had when I had my gb out!! After the surgery nothing has been the same! I have the same back pain you describe along with countless other symptoms that have crept up over the years because of this surgery. And to the person (guest) who said if you are nice in the hospital you will get sent home, and stay until they find something or get a clear diagnosis, I totally agree but it doesn't always happen, they think your pain or symptoms aren't severe enough to keep you or the few tests they perform come out negative, so see ya bye, go home now, and continue suffering at home. We tried the trying to stay in the ER until they found something concrete with my hubby telling the one doc: "take her upstairs, cut her open and find out why she is in so much pain". He was told that just wasn't possible, I had the pain and it was obvious to the doctor that I was in pain but the doc told my hubby that sometimes we have pain but the cause was unclear, so I received 2 shots of demerol within 20 minutes of each other and was discharged before it even started to kick in. Let me tell you, that is an experience I will never forget!! I couldn't move, walk, talk, breathe, but, I was being discharged, and when I got home I told my hubby I thought I was going to die over and over because I was forgetting to breathe, but he said I was breathing, I had hours of hallucinations, my hubby called the ER to complain and they said "we didn't do that to her" but call us if the symptoms persist. Go figure!!! Anyway I wish I could tell you things will get better but I can't! Some of you may never have any more problems and that is just wonderful, but some I fear will continue to be plagued with pain and problems! Good luck to everyone and take care!! Hopefully the answers we seek are or will be out there somewhere!!!

I just had surgery 1/4/08. Didn't have pain before surgery, but was filled with gall stones. I finally caved and had a lap. Did well till this week. Then the stomach cramps, spasms from mid front to back on right side. Usually only last 15-30 minutes. But I can't lay on my favorite right side to sleep anymore.

In fact I am sitting in the recliner with my laptop because it is more comfortable here than in bed.

I started on protein drink today, will do this for a few days to get my system cleaned out and then see what happens.

I am thankful to have found these posts, because at least I know what I am feeling is more normal than I thought.

Sorry we are all in this mess :-(

I am feeling like I', going crazy with having pain after gb removal on 1/1/08. Doctors have done CT hytoscam etc and finding nothing but I am in so much pain I am unable to work still, can't sit long in a chair, lay flat, I have to be reclined 45 degrees to have any tolerable position. How is it that so many of us are having the same problems and yet the doctors continue to disbelieve and make me feel like I'm crazy or milking this. I'm off pain meds, tried taking advil etc, but it does nothing, lots of ice packs are the only thing that help alittle. Thank you all for not making me feel so alone! Hopefully someone in here finds a doctor to find out what is going on. I can't imagine having to live in this much pain forever!

Hi, been reading these comments for months as my wife been going through what most of you describe. had gall bladder out 18+ months ago and was left with blood clot ( or so they thought ) had 6 months of blood thinner as a precaution. Anyway she been having crippling pain starting with a twinge then building up to horrific pain as before the gb removal on and off for 18 months mainly focused under the lower rib cage or breastbone she describes it as a weight pushing down on her crushing her rib cage. even with taking the strong pain killer prescribed the pain stays and the only way to get rid of it is to sit in bed still at 45 deg let the pain killers and some sleep take effect. we have been and out of hospital numerous times been given morphine for the pain when the pain killers arent enough and it eases and we leave after 5-6 hours. this last time round it was most severe we had ever known the pain just would not go even with morphine it only took the edge off. she was admitted to hospital for tests and one day she was turning yellow and the xray showed an inflamed liver. the doctor asked for a camera down the throat and discovered a stone still lodged in the bile duct with some sludge. it was all removed during the camera keyhole procedure and so far she feels a new person. not saying this is the answer but the gb removal by keyhoel obviously wasnt 100% accurate for us. feel for you all and just thought i would share what we think has sorted the problem out. dont take no for an answer get scans in the area of the gall bladder to check there are no remaining problems.
