Finally I'm able to share with my family and friends and coworkers what I mean when I talk about this wierd back
pain after my gallbladder was removed. I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this, though I hope we all find relief. I never had GI problems till my second pregnancy, where I had the back pain terribly when I had heartburn, and had a severe gallbladder attack 2 weeks after giving birth. I began throwing up bile. I was rushed to the hospital where I was told it had an "atrophied" gallbladder, so I had it removed. That was one year ago. Since, I have no more throwing up bile, but strange upper back pain, and only when I smell food, or eat food, and tends to last at least an hour after eating (during digestion). It's very painful, and now getting worse over time! I think I will take the suggestions and go back to my surgeon and talk about the possibility of stones. I thought I was crazy...now I know I'm not! Thank you!

I really think all you should get together and open a class action law suit. My aunt had her gallbladder removed over 20 years ago, about two weeks after her surgery she always complained of back pain. now 20 years later and she's been to every doctor she can think of and they think she's crazy.

I had my gallbladder removed a week ago and for the last 3 days have had excruciating back pain. Mine is in my upper left side around my rib cage. I saw the surgeon this morning who said it was still from the surgery and gave me a stronger narcotic which worked when I first took it but now does nothing, I can't even move to sit up or get out of bed and am nauseous again. I am so glad to see that others had the same problem but wonder why no doctor seems to know it can be a problem.

Hello out there to fellow sufferers. I had my Gall bladder removed 8 months ago, laproscopically. I had gone into hospital with severe attack and they scheduled me for surgery the next day, kept me overnight and then sent me home saying I would have to wait for surgery to take place in out patients seven days later, because they didn't consider it an emergency surgery and the operating room was taken up with emergency surgeries then. I was sent home with percacet prescription, and had several more bad attacks before the surgery. Was sent home again with percacet after surgery to deal with pain, with no warnings about its effects. Took percacet for three days after surgery, then stopped when pain was manageable. 10 days after the surgery, the pain began to increase, and at 14 days was worse than original attack, which felt like I was having a heart attack. Ended up in emergency where a doctor picked up on the problem right away. He said that with gallbladder surgery, even laproscopic type, there is often a disruption to the digestive tracts normal motility patterns and percacet constipates, so the two combined, can cause severe compaction of bowel movement, rather lack of it, this puts pressure on incision site , tearing the freshly sutured area. Once on laxatives the pain subsided. I share this for those who have just had surgery and still in pain that is increasing after it. Get into the doctors and press for answers, it may be what I had or stones still in there or something else complication wise, that they didn't tell you about.
After 8 months I was pain free till now, and had another attack, just like I did before gall bladder was removed, and suspect there could be stones stuck in bile duct or something like that causing it, from what I have read on these other posts. Hopefully my doctor will order the right tests to show what is going on to address it. Often when Doctors can't see anything from the test results, even if you obviously have pain, rather than admit they don't have the answers, say it is in your head.... don't let them off with that, press through, till you get answers, and pray, for God knows far more about your makeup, than any doctor ever will, He can guide them. I had Gall Bladder Removal via Laproscopy on September 4th 2009
Last night (10/09/09) was my first night back at work and I was eventually
sent home after only 8 hours. I was told by my physician to LIMIT my
movements and excercise (even walking) for 4 weeks as I had also had
an Umbilicle Hernia Repaired at the same time.
WOW, I am in 5 times MORE PAIN NOW than I was when they sent me home
from work in September and the Gall-Bladder is GONE! My pain seems to be a
little different. it starts as a NUMBING BURN under the right rib cage and then
turns into a INTENSE PIERCING burn that goes from the area of the gall bladder
all the way thru to my back. My pain also hits me when I am STANDING in a line
for too long, Walking for more than 15 minutes, or even sitting straight up for
more than 30 minutes. I can't work, walk any distance, or even wait in line
for groceries without getting PALE and SWEATING profusely from the pain. I am
to see my GI doc on Wednesday and he thinks that MAYBE there is a STONE lodged
into one of the DUCTS, but he cant be POSITIVE without exploritory surgery. He is
gonna run several tests first to rule out OTHER causes such as SCAR TISSUE, LEAKAGE
from the Surgery, Tumors, and Ulcers.
I am a BIG GUY and have ALWAYS endured ALOT of PAIN as I live with a BONE SPUR
lodged in my spinal cord from an Auto Accident when I was 17. Constant headaches,
severe pain in the neck shouders and arms and numbness of the legs... BUT THIS
gall bladder surgery is KILLING ME!! The ONLY position that is comfortable is laying
on my RIGHT SIDE and I am UNABLE to SIT, WALK, or even STAND for more than 15
or 20 minutes without having the need to lie down and get some relief.
I will re-post my findings, but ANYONE out there who is going thru the same description
of pain as I am... PLEASE let me know!

I am a 30 y/o female. I had my gall bladder removed on 10-16-09. Since waking up after surgery I have had like a burning pain in my mid back.I kind of describe it like labor pains almost. I told them in the recovery room and they told me it was form the position they had me in on the table and gave me some pain meds. Well I have continued to have this pain and its has gotten worse ..radiating towards my abdomen. Pain meds dont help at all. I have been laying on heating pad too. The longer I am up and around the more intense it gets. I cant sit or stand comfortably. Lying down helps a lil but doesnt relieve pain.
I called my doc 4 days after surgery and asked about it and again they said its from the position I was in on the table or from the gas the fill your ab with. Unless they folded me up like a pretzel I dont know why my back would still hurt.
After surgery doc also told my hubby that I was really dehydrated. So they let IV run awhile longer in recovery.
So yesterday I was in so much pain I called doc again. They finally called back only after hubby called and chewed them out.
Nurse said well doc thinks you may have torn a stitch on the inside or maybe have a slight infection starting so we are gonna put you on keflex. Take ibuprofen and lay on heating pad as much as possible.
I m not scheduled to see doc until the 28th. So I asked how long I should I wait to feel better. She said if I m not feeling better in 24 hours to go the ER.
Again I asked her if this back is normal with this surgery. She said is prolly from the gas they used to inflate you.
Im so frustrated. I dont want to hear prolly. I want to know whats causing this. Im in more pain now then I was before I had GB taken out.

:-( I had my gall bladder surgery by keyhole on the 15th October 2009, was told operation had gone well and they were
pleased with the outcome after 1 nights stay in hospital in not too much pain till I tried to stand up that I felt like I could not straighten
up and my 4 wound sites were very sore, I was discharged with lots of medication and told not to lift or stretch for a couple of weeks
and after 10 days go and get my stitches removed as surgeon had used nylon sutures, have now got an infection in my belly button
wound so on strong antibiotics, I have acute pain on my right side like a stitch really hurts when I take a deep breath in, cant lie on
my right hand side as it hurts too much and when I eat and drink I can feel it slowly going down and then feels like a lump of concrete in my tummy also experiencing lots of acid reflux when I burp not very nice at all awaiting an out-patients appt with surgeon who I bet
tells me this is normal how can it be I am crippled with the pain.
Sorry to moan on too much but I cannot help it .

I just got the results of an MRI that was performed to find the cause of the SEVERE PAIN and other SYMPTOMS that I have had since my
Gall-Bladder Removal Surgery. The results are quite interesting and more testing is needed.
RESULT 1 - Showed that I had a PROMINENT SPHINCTER of ODDI fissure. Which is a slight tead in the SPHINCTER of the GallBladder (the muscle responsible for Opening and Closing the Gall Bladder to allow Bile to secrete.
RESULT 2 - Showed a Filling Defect Or Fold in the Bile Duct Also called a The mucosal rosette: A peri-ampullary pseudotumour within a duodenal diverticulum.
RESULT 3 - Slight Meniscus Sign involved on the Common Bile Duct, Hepatic Duct, as well the Cystic Duct.
Although the MRI results claim that the BILE DUCTS are too tiny to show a DEFINITIVE PATTERN or Cause, they recommend BOTH an Endoscopic Evaluation and an ULTRA-SOUND targeted on the Sphincter of Oddi and the Hepatic Duct to verify findings!
All 3 Reults can cause the pain and also cause HEPATIC STEATOSIS which is defined below!
Also called steatosis, fatty liver can be a temporary or long-term condition, which is not harmful itself, but may indicate some other type of problem. Left untreated, it can contribute to other illnesses. It is usually reversible once the cause of the problem is diagnosed and corrected. The liver is the organ responsible for changing fats eaten in the diet to types of fat that can be stored and used by the body. Triglycerides are one of the forms of fat stored by the body and used for energy and new cell formation. The break down of fats in the liver can be disrupted by alcoholism, malnutrition, pregnancy, or poisoning. In fatty liver, large droplets of fat, containing mostly triglycerides, collect within cells of the liver. The condition is generally not painful and may go unnoticed for a long period of time. In severe cases, the liver can increase to over three times its normal size and may be painful and tender.
So... Read the 2 sites below to better understand this Disease. It is said to be RARE, but possibly THOUSANDS of people could have this problem and NEVER know it !
I HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE OTHER THAN MYSELF!!

I am 19 years old, and after having that surgery post-pregnancy, i still experience pain like my intestines are seizing up whenever i move or put any pressure on them, need to go to the bathroom, back pain (not such a big issue cuz i've had back pain all my life but still...), embarassing bowel movements to the point i'm afraid to go in any bathroom where other people might go, i feel sick and overheated constantly, and the right side of my stomach hurts. I feel like an old woman and I shouldn't. I don't know what to do either cuz its extreme pain but I have NO health insurance and NO money to pay for it. I'm at a complete and utter loss.
