Best doctors for HOLEP surgery

Did you have any updates on Dr. Dusing? I am also considering holep surgery and haven’t found any testimonials online.

I highly recommend Dr. Joel Funk in Tucson AZ.  He has performed over 3000 HoLeps.   I found out about him on this board, but there are limited reviews.

April 18, 2022

Went into surgery approx 11:00 am.  Came out of anesthesia approx 2 pm.  No pain at this time.  Because I live about 1 hour away from Tucson I was kept in the hospital overnight.  I was cathertized with a 3 way catheter which was constantly flushing my bladder.

 

April 19, day 2

Catheter removed at 6:30 am.  Was able to pee within 1/2 hour.  No pain or burning sensation.  No urgency or leakage.   Minimal blood in urine.   Drank lots of water and peed several times, again no pain or burning.  Bladder scanned twice after peeing once at around 11:00 am and again about an hour later.  Bladder emptying  both times.  Perfect :)  Discharged from hospital around 1:30 pm.  A bit constipated so I took some milk of magnesia and was able to go.

 

April 20, day 3

Had to get up quite often during the night to pee.  But I have been drinking tremendous amounts of water.  Still no pain or burning so I am going to assume I will not have any. Still a small amount of blood in urine.  One note about the bleeding.  When I start to pee I can see the blood, but after the initial start the urine is then clear. 

 

April 22, day 5  No more blood.  All is good :)  Labs came back today.  Benign :)

May 24, 2022 -- my brother just finished the HoLep with Dr. Lingeman in Indiana. Was pre-screened by local Indiana urologist who referred him to Lingeman so they met in person, office staff called couple days before for teleconference before procedure. Brother spoke very highly of the dr and his staff. Stayed overnight in the hospital, checked out and returned home next day. We spoke today, he passed urine immediately, no need for cathing, very little blood in urine, no pain, using antibiotics for about 1 week. Follow up visit in 3 months. I need same procedure. Dr. Lingeman suggested two former students, current and very experienced practitioners in Florida: Drs Chandler Dora and Ramsey Klo (spelling).

I am very thankful to have found this blog. I found my holep surgeon Dr. Bandi here. We live in New York and the choices are limited and the surgeons had no experience. We went to Washington DC to see Dr. Bandi Who has performed over 1000 procedures. He is a class act. I was discharged home the same day. I remove the catheter myself the next day and had some bleeding for about a week. It’s all good since then. The doctor was a godsend.

Another vote for Dr. Bandi in Washington DC. I saw three other urologist from a large local group (Chesapeake Urology) who recommended robotic prostatectomy and Aquablation. My prostate size was 170. I read about Aquablation and the bleeding risk appears very high for large prostates. Found Dr. B on this forum. Looks like he is a national expert on BPH and performs all the BPH procedures. There was a waiting time to schedule surgery as he schedule is very busy. I was discharged home same day and took my catheter out at home next day. Minimal leakage for 1 week and things have been great since. Highly recommended procedure and doctor

I had HoLEP exactly 5 years ago. After the procedure, I spent one night in hospital and went home the following morning. Most uncomfortable moment was one second of removing the catheter. I was getting up 4-5 times each night to relieve myself and decided it was time. Had wonderful sleep without getting up during the night. About 3 1/2 years after the procedure, I noticed I was getting up once during the night to relieve myself. In the last year or so, I've been getting up on an average of twice each night and sometimes 3 times, and sometimes only once. Fluid intake a couple of hours before bedtime affects things. I have started having sudden urgency in the last year, so much that I sometimes dribble. My flow has decreased and dribble at end of relieving myself. Non of these events bother so much except for getting up at night as it interupts my sleep. I am thinking therefore that maybe I should have HoLEP again or I'm expecting too much since the procedure was so effective afterwards. So the effects of HoLEP has definitly declined and may do again after speaking with the doctor. My doctor is highly exprienced in the procedure and has been doing it for several years. He was located in Tampa and is now at Mayo in Jax - Dr. Chandler Dora. He wants to see your urologist records before seeing you, virtual or otherwise.

Hi. I live in North Alabama. This past Monday I saw a urologist in Nashville, Vanderbilt graduate (urologist in my area are very limited in scope). I had rectal ultrasound under anesthesia and was told in post-op recovery by the urologist that I had a 147 gram prostate and not sign of cancer. I don't remember much of the remainder of the conversation due to anesthesia. My wife said the urologist mention that operating on a prostate this size was not in his area of expertise. I am supposed to have a follow up televisit with him. However, I am interested in HoLEP. And since I just located this forum, has anyone had the HoLEP procedure with someone in this area?
