I've had My mirena for just over 4 years. Started getting extreme stabbing pains only on the one side at least twice a week. Had it removed and a started bleeding next day.. Changed pad every hour because of all the blood and had golf sized clots coming out. that was three weeks ago. Still bleed. Only now starting to slow down. Still have clots just smaller. Apparently this is all normal as the body is working the hormones out of your system.

In the same boat... Heavy bleeding and clotting for over 3 Weeks after having it removed 4'5 years after insertion. Doc says it's normal. But quite frankly I'm PISSED that no one informed me (not even mirena) that this was a possibility when removing it... I sure would have though twice about putting one in.

I had mirena iud put in last Friday and got such cramps that I had it removed Wednesday-5 days later. I felt better immediately. After 2 days I started bleeding, heavily. I got mirena because of such heavy periods in the first place. I last had my period 5 days before insertion; I'm not due to have my period for another 2 weeks. Had I known this bleeding would occur, I would never have had it done. And this bleeding only after having mirena in for 5 days???? I feel like I'm going to bleed to death. I have no idea where it's coming from as I couldn't build up lining with so much blood in a week and a half, and it keeps coming! I thought that women who've had mirena for years would experience this but not me. I can't imagine what it would be like if I had it longer than a week.  This can't be normal. Even if the doctors' say it is, it can't be. Where is all this blood and clots coming from? It's like an open wound, bright red. How can they get away with this? I think it must be the synthetic hormone that makes this bleeding occur. Does anyone know how to stop it?

This reply is years after the others were posted. When I had mirena placed 4 years ago I had no complications the first year. No periods throughout the time I had mirena. After the first year my mood swings were horrible. I would just all of a sudden have a rage of anger and it would be over something so little. Other effects I have experienced are acne, hair falling out, depression, loss of sex drive and weight gain. I gained between 20-30lbs the 4 years I had it. I finally convinced my dr to remove it. I have had a little light bleeding here and there and now it's just like a clear discharge with some brown streaking blood. I had it removed on Tuesday not even a week ago and have lost 4lbs already, without changing diet or exercise. So for all of you with issues similar, Mirena is horrible, and I would never suggest it to anyone.

I also gained 20+ pounds with Mirena. Doctors definitely need to be aware that all the symptoms their patients are coming to them about is indeed due to Mirena. I suffered for 4 years with it. 2 years prior I asked my dr to take it out put he convinced me to keep it. Finally I said enough is enough and insisted he remove mirena, he did. He still says my problems I have been dealing With are not caused by mirena. This thing needs to be pulled off shelves. I will NEVER EVER suggest this horrible thing to anyone!

How long did it take to stop the bleeding? Exact same situation all the way down to the day it was taken out.

I had mirena for about 1.5 years. I took it out because of many complications. And the first two days I was okay, some spotting started the second day then it went into FULL BLOWN bleeding. and it's been a week of this. I'm having HUGE blood clots. I was told by my doctor to double my BC pills for three days. If anything it seems worse! And now Im taking 10mg of provera for 5 days. I hope this makes it stop. I'm feeling so crappy. My lower abdomen is sensitive, and this bleeding is exhausting me. I feel like I have a fever. But everytime I check I don't.

Worse decision I have ever made. I will NEVER get an IUD or recommend it to anyone

After having my Mirena IUD for just over 2 years, i was defiantly glad to have it taken out.

The doctor recommend the IUD for my heavy periods, and due to health issues i had it fitted during general anesthetic.

BUT NOBODY TOLD ME ABOUT ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS, NOT EVEN THE NHS WEBSITE!After about a week, i started to have sharp cramps in the side of my stomach, i would constantly (throughout the 2 years) have white thick discharge, which i went to my GP about and he said it was just "normal"!My periods were too unpredictable, and i didnt feel all too comfortable 'down there' when having intercourse with my boyfriend.

i did not unlike some people gain weight, that was a plus but the cons out-weighted the pro's, believe me!

I have had the mirena out for 3 days now, and i have constantly bleed from about 2 hours after removal. I have never been this heavy before, and i am also having lower back pain, as well as serious bloating (i feel like im 6 months pregnant) and ive never been pregnant! Im also very lethargic and have no energy what so ever!

PLEASE THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE HAVING MIRENA, TAKE IT FROM US WOMAN, I THINK WE WOULD ALL RATHER BE PREGNANT THAN GO THROUGH THIS AGAIN! Mirena, im sorry you have lost a patient, permanently!

Hello, MINI PILL!  XD

I had mu Mirena removed a week and a half ago and the bleeding and clots have not stopped. Also for the first week I was getting headaches and nausea. The last couple days I have had not energy and feel listless. Is that possible because I haven't lost this much blood in 5 years? I had really heavy periods that's why I went on Mirena, I don't know what I will do if they get heavy again once I stop bleeding.

I know - wondering the same thing.  Had mine out on Friday after 13 months - the bleeding is very heavy during the morning and slows/stops late afternoon and evening - I had no idea this would happen. It's like 13 months worth of uterine lining all needs to come out now... :(  I am done having kids - i just want a hysterectomy so I don't have to deal with all of this!

I've called Bayer makers of Mirena and told them that the gushing blood and clots needs to be mentioned on their mirena site as post removal happenings.  They told me it was not researched and I told them they need to research that because it's really happening to everyone from what i've googled.  If mirena is supposed to "thin the lining" then why all the gushing blood and clots after removal?  Its like we were plugged up and I only had mine for a year thank GOD.  This cannot be good for our bodies.  I've had two accidents today from the gushes and I started the pill 11 days ago when I got it removed and have been gushing for 9.  Ladies, PLEASE call BAYER and report this after removal side effect.  It needs to be told to people.  If I woulda known I would have NEVER gotten this.  Please call and save this from surprising so many other women.  Thank you and I hope everyone feels better soon.

I have the same situation going on - IUD removed last Thursday due to severe abdominal pain, constant bleeding for 5 months and ovarian cysts.    The bleeding is very heavy and clotting like crazy - worse in the mornings.    I've taken more ibuprofen in the last 5 months than should be taken in a life time.   I was also prescribed pain meds due to the severe abdominal and lower back pain I was experiencing over the last 2 weeks.    I have a high pain tolerance - taking prescription pain meds is something I've never done - until now.

Mirena did not work for me at all.

Hi ladies,
I dont know if this applies to anyone else. I am very sensitive to hormones as strange as it sounds any little change i can feel. I had a minera put in 20 months ago after my daughter was born (#3) i wasnt sure if this was going to be our final child so the minera seemed to be the best choice.

Over the last 6-8 months i have felt continued nausea, major moodiness, lightheaded and dizzy, and presure in my lower stomach. Ive had less physical bleeding when I do get my period, but sever cramps that feel like contractions anytime of day and in the last few weeks during the night while sleeping that suddenly feel me crippled and in extreme pain. During intercourse, ive felt alot of pressure and once its over i am rolled over in extreme pain. On jan 13 i begged to have my minera removed( i think this is causing it ) now 4 days later i have heavy bleeding, and blood clots the size of golf balls.

Has anyone else had these symptons?
Has anyone else experienced the clots like this and heavy bleeding ?

Thanks ladies,
Mom of 3
