Try putting more fiber into your diet, maybe even a fiber supplement like Metamucil, Benefiber, or Citrucel. I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis, had all the same symptoms, and started eating m9re fibrous foods, and it helped immensely. Also, keep foods like corn, or nuts to a minimum. Good luck.
Omg i have this everytime i go minus passing out what did they tell u
I had this problem for years. It was a nightmare. I also have endometriosis, Celiac and Colitis so any number of things were blamed. Very long story short, the gastroenterologist said they were most likely simply caused by constipation. He said even mild constipation could cause these attacks for anyone with any sort of bowl issues. He said to take Restoralax EVERY DAY (in the USA it's called Miralax) As long as I do this I am fine. If I don't and even miss a BM for 1 day I will have an attack. So it's not getting to the root cause but it's a fix, at least for me. There is so much unknown about this kind of thing that I'm just happy to have a way to stop the attacks. Simply extra fiber didn't help me. The key is to keep the bowels moving and keep them soft.
hi jckratt 12, how are you feeling these days.
Best,
Heather

The padded stool is a great idea, because I have had to have my husband hold me up while having a bowel movement in case I fall over. I have heard of people dying on the toilet.
Stunned to read the same experiences! I'm a 60 year old female who has been dealing with severe pain w/bowel movements for decades. Usually I would have 3-4 episodes a year to now 1-2 episodes a month.
Wake up from a dead sleep. Hear/feel the pre-diarrheal rumblings. Then it is a race to the toilet. Abdominal pain starts and is unrelenting until the first-round stool is eliminated (hard, soft or diarrhea). During the time from the onset of pain to 1st elimination, I grasp the sides of the wall, become semi-conscious (an elonged pre-fainting feeling) am nauseated or vomit, frantically shed my clothes because It feels like a serious hot flash and sweat is dripping sweat from my forehead. A few times I have had out of body experiences. Shoving my fists into my abdomen and bending far forward seems to assist in a quicker elimination. I too have laid on the tile floor in exhaustion between eliminations. The cycle continues 2-4 times and takes 45 min to more than an hour. The 1st elimination is as painful as kidney stones (which I have had 3x). Subsequent eliminations are less painful, but still very painful. When the cycle is done I'm cold and exhausted and sleep for 1-2 hours.
My endoscopy a few years ago was normal.
Anytime I know I will be eating at a restaurant I make sure to have no plans afterwards in case I experience one of these episodes, as my episodes usually happen shortly after eating.
Tips - strategies that help me
1) keep a floor fan in bathroom to cool down
2) keep disposable cold packs in a basket near the toilet
3) towel (n same basket of cold packs) to wipe off the sweat
4) & spray bottle with ice & water to spray on face (I fill up the bottle with ice chips before going to bed)
5) keep a short bathrobe on a hook on back of bathroom door. Use the bathrobe to drape on my legs or around my shoulders if I get too cold; also used to lay on the floor
6) discovered if I raise my feet up approximately 6" inches onto a step stool - or toilet step you can purchase at Costco) and lean to the left, elimination is a bit easier even though the severe pain remains.

i have this all the time i only have bowel movement 1 time every 5 to 10 days and evey time same thing. It will keep me in bed for at least a day wish i had answer also burning pain in hip
I feel my stomach upset and know when it's coming. I start to get anxiety and when I sit down on the toilet I get cold and my heart starts to slow and I get a little lightheaded and feel like I need to poop something out that's making me feel this way. It freaks me out. I already have bad anxiety so this is scary to me. The worst was the first one when I woke up in my sleep and had shaky legs walking to the toilet and pooped out everything I had ever eaten while having tunnel vision and got cold. I rolled over and kicked the shower on heat and layer there until I convinced myself I wasn't going to die.
I have had these same symptoms for a few years now. Woken at night with sharp painful movements in tummy followed by gurgling sound and then breaking out into hot sweats and excruciating pain where I have to use all my strength to not pass out. It's extremely difficult to not pass out, helps to remove clothing however the pain does not pass until the bowel is completely empty. Like many posters here the bowel movement begins solid but transgresses to loose bowel movements that are just as painful to pass.
I usually have to call out to my wife to come and hold my head up whilst I'm going through this as the pain could easily knock me out cold. It's a terrible episode that I wish upon no one
I became so paranoid and sick from suspecting food types that I simply stopped eating - my episodes continued though and through it I ended up losing near 20kg! I did all the tests with GPs and Specialist including colonoscopy, X-rays, ultrasound, blood work, stool samples etc - the only item that showed up was mild diverticulitis! I knew there was more to this so I did significant research from posters and forums all around the world online and the only common solution that appeared to significantly reduce or even eliminate these episodes was through completely removing dairy from your diet! I have now been completely dairy free for 2 years and I'm happy to say in that time I've only had 1 episode early on as probably ate dairy unaware. I've now become extremely disciplined in ensuring I don't eat dairy with only having almond or soy milk and I will ensure all ingredients are completely dairy free and when I eat out at restaurants or order food that it's always made dairy free. If I suspect there is dairy - I simply don't eat it! No matter what! Nothing is worth going through the pain again- it's devastating. I feel healthier than ever before with dairy removed from my life and you will find there are many alternatives out there where u can still indulge - ie Dairy Free chocolate biscuits etc.
My recommendations for sufferers here - please immediately commence in removing all things dairy from your diet, at least try it and be completely disciplined with removing it. It worked for me and if I can help anyone else out there with ending the pain and suffering of these episodes then I will be extremely happy. Good luck people

I really enjoy reading your post since it really relates to my symptoms except I never experience the sweatiness and the coldness
You have described exactly how I feel. I've had these "attacks" for about 20 years but only every few years. I had my gallbladder removed when I was very young. Unfortunately that didn't help the situation. Just had another episode tonight. It is so scary! It gets so bad I feel like I'm not going to make it through it.
I get this pain too and it is very scary, i was driving home from uni and felt the severe pain in my stomach it usually passes so i waited to pain out hoping to reach my destination very soon however i didn't make it and passed out at the wheel on the whole other side of the road. This pain is very dangerous does anyone know how to fix this? its so hard for me to get back behind the wheel again without the fear it might happen while i'm driving again.
Hi there. Was taking Donnatal for four years and never had another episode. My insurance refused to cover it since January (2017) and I've been taking Phenohytro instead. So far so good. Diagnosis was vasovagal syncope, probably caused by damage to the vagus nerve. IBS was the likely cause of the pain, and Donnatal was prescribed.
