I am actually at a sonic with a slush as I am reading this. I get this too but for me it is in the back of the neck.

I also want to tell you that you are not alone. The rest of my family gets brain freezes, while I get cold back aches. Exactly the same feeling just in my middle back.

I too get these back freezes, though mine run concurrent with the brain freeze. I'd prefer the brain freeze over the back freeze any day because of how painful it becomes. My pain goes down the spine and stops at the thoracic (middle) of my back where the pain is more concentrated. I've suffered from severe back pain for more than 16 years of my 30 year life. I've had several back procedures including a spinal fusion on L4 and L5 due to chronic pain caused by disc herniation, arthritis and degenerative disc disease. I Also suffer from failed back surgery syndrome, that's the actual name and diagnostic of it, due to the aforementioned back surgery not being successful and making the back pain even more unbearable. So I always attributed the pain from the back freeze to that and the damaged nerves in the back due to so many years of herniation and whatnot. When I visit my neurologist, I'll ask him about it and return with an answer. Just think of us as one big happy and painful back freeze family! LOL

Thank you for the post. I thought I was alone. I get spinal freezes too when ingesting cold food and water. If you can believe it, I get them both at the same time. Now that's like being a human popsicle! Lol

I'm experiencing this. Extremely painful and unpredictable. Have been aching neck shoulder arm to hand for 3 1/2 weeks non stop. Also feel it in left side of chest around heart. I have cervical disc issues mixed with the symptoms of hypothyroid loss of eyebrow other edge, loss of energy and weight gain. It is bizarre and I hope it disaster soon. I'm a gulf war Era vet.

OMG I'm not alone! I've been having brain freeze, chest freeze and RUQ freeze at the same time. It hurts soooo freaking much!!! this just started happening a month ago. I always get brain freeze but never in those other areas. I assume it has something to do with my gallbladder?? I can't even eat Popsicles anymore. Slushies, especially with liquor, just kill me! It's awful. This isn't fair, I love my froZen drinks. Whats going on inside my body??

You're def not alone. I've been trying to figure out why this happens to me as well. I assumed it was my scoliosis that caused it but there's a few threads I found that there's a weird connection between this and adhd (which I also have). Just thought you'd like some kind of an update, even if it's small haha.

I get the back pain when drinking something real cold. I do not get headaches. In fact, I have never had a headache in my life. I had my gall bladder and spleen removed when I was 10 years old, due to having hereditary spherocytosis anemia.

I thought I was the only one, but reading others like me, I would like to know why it effects us in the back and others in the head.

It's called an esophageal spasm. It's basically a spasm of your esophagus that can be felt in your back. It's totally benign, but completely annoyingly painful. Just avoid super cold drinks if you need to. But I feel like my spams are a small price to pay for a delicious frozen cocktail.
