Hi, have you been tested for Alpha-1 deficiency (AKA as AAT). It considered the most undiagnosed deadly disease, which is sad as the test is so simple.

It's a genetic disease which can destroy the lung, even if not smoking. There IS a weekly plasma infusion one can get (I do this) that can majority slow the accelerated rate of lung destruction as it is plasma with the missing gene.

Good luck. Oh, by the way, exercise is really helpful for difficult breathing, too. Good luck

I know your post is a year old.........but I have to reply; Hope all is good now, and the breathing got better. I'm in a similar boat. Never had an issue while I smoked, but 2 months smoke free, breathing is rough and anxiety is high.

Your story could be mine, almost. my lung function is OK at best and i have major anxiety. tingling and trouble staying asleep - BINGO.

Just to offer a note here. Your Dr is right in that Anxiety attacks can cause SOB attacks. After I had a car accident and injury which took a tole on me, I suffered from anxiety/panic attacks and had to receive oxegen treatments because I could not breath. Nothing to do with smoking. I'm on day 11 not smoking and surprisingly it has not been difficult at all even though I smoked for about 48 yrs with a 2 yr break in there where I had quit (stress caused me to pick it up again). You have to have a strong will to not smoke again though. No breathing problems but according to everyone here, I should expect to have some SOB soon. Hope I can avoid this side effect too.

Your right at about where I am in the cycle of things (wk 2). You feel better when you sleep for one you are relaxing everything and breathing slower and you are not stressed by lack of nicotene (anxiety). You should probably get your dr to give you a resuce inhaler to use when you have a SOB attack (it works in minutes to open your airways). You will begin to relax and not worry and probably find you rarely if ever need it after awhile.

I have been using a steroid inhaler too. It's to reduce inflamation of the bronchile tubes which can swell and cause some reduced breathing but, a short-rescue inhaler is more effective in eleviating SOB within minutes and help you get through this phase of it. You might want to see your dr.

I use 3 % peroxide all the time orally with no ill effects and infact it's an additive in tooth paste. I use it for cuts, ant bites etc. great invention. Pharathists don't have all the answers they a drug pushers (they get big annual bonuses based on their sales) confict of interest don't you think?

I have been trying to research and find everything I can about the effects of quitting smoking. Here's a couple of things worth mentioning. Stay away from caffine for a period of time because what ever you take in now has twice the effect on your system it did before which could be why your having sleeping problems and anxiety. Caffine/Alcohol de-hydrate you so drink lots of water to moisten your lungs and keep the mucus loose to expell.

I have exactly the same feelings, I quit four months ago, after a nasty bout of bronchitus. Now I feel worse than wen I smoked. Chest tightness, fear of suffocating.
Have had multiple tests , only thing I haven't is spirometer. All tests come back normal. What is going on.

Told me exactly the same thing, given me advair for swelling, and rescue for panic. All my tests come back normal.

I quit smoking 8 months ago and i feel great!I smoked a pack a day for 16 years. I can run for miles now and it really improved my cycling as well. When i breathe in i can feel my lungs expanding and contracting more. I can take deeper breathes and can hold my breathe under water for longer. I do a lung exercise where i fill up my camel back with water and blow as hard as i can into the hose making bubbles. Its a great way to improve lung capacity. Anyways I'm so glad i quit.best decision of my life so far. Its turned me into a fitness freak. Total 180
