I've had the exact same issue that has been mentioned in this thread previously. On occasion, when drinking sugary liquors or when mixing liquor with a sugar mix, I've gotten intense pains in my stomach anywhere from 5-15 minutes. I mean intense to the point where, if possible, I would retire to a bedroom and curl up into a fetal position. After the episode passes, I am completely fine for the remainder of the evening no matter how much of anything else I consume. I used to think that this was from spiced rums such as Southern Comfort or Captain Morgan's, but I have experienced the same issues while drinking my regular Jack and Coke. I have never, repeat NEVER, had this occur while drinking an equivalent amount of Jack Daniels and Diet Coke or Coke Zero. For me this is certainly directly related to the simultaneous intake of sugar and Alcohol. I'd love to hear an explanation of why this may occur, however, I've since switched to Diets and haven't had the issue since (4-5 yrs).
I also have the issue with Sugary drinks/alcoholic drinks...
They cause a severe sharp pain in my stomache area / middle chest pain after drinking alcohol.
It is often so intense that I vomit and I get a sense of release for about 15 senconds then pain returns. My longest time suffering from the sharp pain is about 30 minutes (but it felt like FOREVER).
I too am ABLE consume Red Wine ONLY, baileys/tequilarose (oldy enough) and LIGHT beer (but I have a gluten intolerance so thats a no go) without the pain happening.
I drank heavily but not often in my late teen and early twenties...
Now in my late twenties I am absolutely unable to drink anything with a sugar or straight alcohol unless it is a creamy drink...
LOVE GETTING OLDER!!!!! LOL
Good Luck everyone!
Dude, oatmeal is like the only thing that I feel like doesn't destroy me. Let's all vow to stick with oatmeal.
Yes, drinking a sweet drink, like a Margarita or a Pina Colada, on an empty stomach, causes me great pain in the stomach asl well as a burning in the bicepts muscles of my arms.
Having a non-sweet drink, like a Gin & Tonic on an empty stomack, does not cause the problem. Having a sweet drink on a full stomack does not cause the problem.
However, when I start to feel 'that pain' coming on, IMMEDIATELY eat sometinig like a piece of bread that is buttered, it almost immediately interrupts the proces and spares me about 45 minutes of agony.
I never thought I would be able to stop drinking either. After 8 years of drinking (and many attempts to stop) I have finally had to do it, due to stomach and chest pain every time I drink. There is no easy way to do it. Everyone has to find their own way to ease into not drinking. Good company, when I needed company, rest when I needed rest, and for a few weeks, not pleasing anyone but myself. I mean I still went to work and didn't abandon my family, but knowing when to take half an hour to myself, closing the bedroom door, and not feeling guilty about it, when I would usually be reaching for a drink or visiting a friend if I wanted a distraction, again, instead of reaching for a drink. Like I said you will have to find what works for you, but it can be done. And the longer you go without a drink, the easier it will get. :)
I read a post on another site from an MD who has the same issue (his was drinking very sweet wines) and he says it's spasaming of the Sphincter of Oddi (Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction).
"The Spincter is a muscular ring around the bile duct. It is supposed to open during a meal but if it spams... bile and pancreatic secretions back up and stretch the bile duct causing the ouch we experience. Just avoid the offending drink. If this is a common occurance, a simple endoscopic procedure can cure it. Antispasmodic drugs may help."
I have had this issue since I started drinking as a teen. ONLY happens with very sugary alcoholic drinks. The pain is very intense and goes away in about 15 min.
what goes round comes round, I was that way most of my life, and now my daughter is and we have no relationship
Hi 39 year old that has been drinking 11 years. I am 41 and developed alcoholism at age 35. I never had a problem drinking before then. My point is I have suffered the physical consequences of drinking and they are quite painful. I often cannot eat and when I do I want to throw-up. I consume 3-5 miniature bottles of hard alcohol per day and this is causing me these issues. I did drink more in the past but try my best to limit my alcohol intake. I have been sober/not drinking at as long as 3 years but continue to come back to it. It is the one thing in my life that I wish I could change. I only hope that you are cautioned by this message. I only wish to help someone else not have to go through what I did.
