Lie down with your feet on the floor and your knees raised and apart. Hold your labia minora apart gently with one hand, and with the other hand hold a hand-mirror angled so that you can see the entrance of your vagina. There would usually be a finger-sized hole in the hymen membrane. However the hymen can present itself differently, sometimes having more than one hole. I hope this helps.

A heart-shaped hymen is quite normal. Your hymen partly covers the vagina canal entrance, but just inside. The vagina itself is a muscular tube that contracts in on itself, and opens up when something is inserted. The "thick layer" you see might well be the vagina walls meeting together. From what you have described, your hymen is intact, and your vagina is 'virgin'.
