It's been awhile since I've posted here, but I wanted to give a quick update. I had my second bunionectomy, gastroc recession and shortened metatarsal in December and all went well. I've started and stopped running a few times in the last couple of months. I've stopped due to an ear infection, and starting off too fast. I'm signing up for a 5K in early August, so it's my goal to get in shape for that! My goal for the next couple of weeks is running a total of 3-4 miles/week. Doesn't seem like much, but I know I need to take it slow. I feel really good when running - in fact, sometimes it seems easier to run than walk!
I am getting surgery in 2 days and have been freaking out!! I am a runner and do 2-3 half marathons a year. I have had bunions as long as I can remember (in fact, my 5 year old daughter is developing them fast) and they have never bothered me until the last 6 months and it is impacting my running. I need to have both done but am doing the left first. I am very worried about not being able to run again or at the same amounts as before but this gives me some hope! I ran 5 miles yesterday as my last run for a LONG time and paid for it all day yesterday but it was worth it. It has helped me a lot to see these postings! Thanks!
I just had my second bunion and neuroma surgery last week. I had my other bunion surgery done 5 yrs ago. I have run 2 marathons after my first surgery. YES, you shold be able to run after surgery. Listen to your doctor and take the amount of time off from running that he suggest. My Pioditrist is also a Marathon runner and with his help I will be able to do another marathon.
Thanks! Had the surgery in October and I was back to running in January! I am only up to 5 miles at the most but am hoping to get back up to 8-10 before I have my next surgery in June. It would be nice to be in shape for when I have to sit around for 6 more weeks! The surgery went well-I had a plate put in but can't tell. I still have some ligament pain but not for long. I did just run 2 days back-to-back this week for the first time and that did hurt some after. BUT! Thanks! I see that once I recover from the one in June, half marathons will be in my future! I have some picked out!! The pain I had pre-surgery is gone, so I feel it was good to have had it. Thanks again.
Hi. Have finally decided to go ahead with bunion surgery on my left foot after having suffered since a child. Had my consultation yesterday and surgery is in October, but already I'm freaking out that I won't be able to run after. I do races up to and including half marathons, after telling my surgeon this he advised me to take up swinning instead. Not the answer I wanted but after reading all your replies I'm more determined to get back to running and to prove him wrong. Do I have to see a sports physiotherapist after so they can help me get back racing?
That's an unfair comment. Sometimes there are people out there who know quite a bit and have tips that are quite helpful which surgeons know nothing about. Nothing beats asking your doctor, but don't be so condescending and understand that there are other people who do have a clue----and sometimes the answer - especially those who have been there before!

I am 9 mos post op. I started running a bit starting at 6 months. In the 7th month i was running a scant 3 miles couple times a week and had a big setback. Horrific pain, plantar fasciitis etc. went back to physical therapy and 6 weeks in. I have constant pain at about level 23 when I walk a Bit. Therapist tells me it will just take Time. Ugh. I used to do ironman distant triathlon. When will it end?
I know this is really late to post but, I wanted to share my experience with running post bunionectomy. I only had the surgery because the pain became unbearable. I was not able to run until 5 months post surgery. Slowly built up from 2 miles to 10K in few months and after a year I was able to run a half marathon. It's been almost 6 years and now I experience a little pain occasionally when running long distances (I think the pin needs to come out). The first few weeks of the recovery were painful and it took 5-6 months for a lot of the swelling to go down and about a year before it went away. Definitely do the exercises the doctor recommends to minimize the scar tissue.
