I had the Mirena first almost 9 years ago with little problem. After I had it removed last year (January 2016) and had the Paraguard put in, I've had many different health issues. Insanely high blood pressure, headaches among other things. The worst is the UTIs. They happen more and more frequent. I went to the gyno this week, again, for all the pelvic pain and UTIs and she referred me to a urologist for Interstatial Cystitis treatment. IC is chronic, unrelenting bladder pain. My family dr suggested getting the paraguard last year and I disregarded her. Now, I'm convinced it's the IUD and/or copper toxicity. It's exhausting to worry about my bladder non stop. It's ruled my life for the last year and I'm ready to change. I'm making an appointment to get it out and will follow up as I progress I think it's important to hear the "after removal" stories too and wish more ladies would share their followups.

Hi, I have been suffering with uti's for the last 12 months every other month. I've had the copper iud for 4 years but having read your post I have an appointment on Thursday to get it removed. Doctors have also told me the coil is unrelated to uti's so I'm keen to have it removed to see if it solves the problem! I am getting married next month and am very worried that I will be ill over my wedding. I'm really hoping they are linked so that the problem is solved. Are you still suffering from uti's since the coil has been removed?

Same for me. I never had an UTI before I had an IUD. First I had a Mirena IUD and my UTIs were rare. Thus it did not bother me too much and I also did not get the link. I had maximum 2 per year and my physician was already worried and sent me to cytoscopy, where they did not find anything. That is already 10 years ago. I started going urinating after intercourse, that did the trick for me (even that was not suggested by a physician, I just had to figure myself that it is related to intercourse...). But then I got another IUD, copper this time. Whereas with the Mirena I was in a relationship, with the copper I was mostly single and did not have intercourse so often. I kept on urinating after intercourse, but suddenly my bladder infection got more frequently even though I had way less sex... When I then found a new partner 2.5 years ago my bladder infections were there every month. I tried everything from Mannose, Cranberries, Uva Ursi, Golden Seal, Eight Righteous Tea Pills, chaning pH of urine... All of them kind of worked for lowering the chance of getting them or / treatment (sometimes I got rid of the UTI by using these herbs). But I was only able to get the frequency down to 1 per three month or so and treatment of an UTI stopped working after a while by using these herbs. Finally I did more and more research and considered more and more the possiblity that my UITs are linked to IUDs. Whcih was tricky for me because I had an IUD for 10 years already and never connected them to UTIs when they were still rare. I found this forum and a research article  and a physician (UTI specialist that did another cytoscopy on me) said that it might be the IUD. Finally I decided to get rid of it (my gynecologist was not convinced)... That was a year ago. NO BLADDER INFECTIONS SINCE!!! What a release. No herbs, no crazy cleanliness, just a perfectly normal life is back! Temperature method / cervix and condoms... That is my birth control know.... Works like a dream and I know my body now!! (Birth control hormones are not an options for me since I have a high risk for thrombosis). Hope that helps y'all!!!

HI All! I have been experiencing so much of the same issues: chronic UTI's, kidney infections, yeast infections, bacterial vaginitis, and bleeding after sex. It's been a constant battle. The only thing that makes logical sense to me, is that it is the IUD that is making it extremely sensitive or there is (like others mentioned in this blog) an infection that is attached the IUD. I have the Paragaurd IUD, and I have had to replace it already because it was placed incorrectly the first time. Reading all these other responses and stories has really helped me understand and confirm what I (and we all) knew was already true. Thank you all so much! I am calling the doctors today to make an appointment to remove it.

does anyone have any comments on what happened with the uti's once the IUD was removed? did the uti's stop after removal?

I had my copper coil removed two weeks ago and on the whole my bladder feels much better. I've also found out I am anaemic so think my low immune system has also contributed to the frequency of uti's. Last week I also started taking cranberry capsules. I'm hoping all these changes will make a difference! My gp also confirmed today that she has seen other women who got relief from utis once there're coil was removed.

I had my IUD put in a year ago. I pay close attention to my body so when something doesn't usually feel right, I will go see a Dr and usually my gut instinct is confirmed. I decided to call up my OBGYN to change my birth control. I had told her I wanted to be checked for uti, which I had a feeling started a month and a half since it took 3 weeks to get in with my OB. Sure enough it came back positive for UTI and I was given antibiotics to take care of it. The birth control was removed and looking to get the one that goes in the arm. I've had the one in the arm before and liked it the most but wanted to try the IUD since it lasts 5 yrs, and the arm one only last 3. I haven't had sexual intercourse in about 9 months so I cant entirely link it to that but one thing that was sitting in the back of my mind was the fact that my mom got UTIs a lot, especially the older she got. I make sure to wipe and clean properly because I don't want to have one. This is the first one I have ever had it and I didn't want to risk it continuing if it was tied to the IUD, which I won't know and doubt my Dr will check. I didn't want to push the issue and have her look at me like I'm paranoid over a small device. Also I'm not a Dr or work in the medical field but I'd feel if my mother had issues with repeat UTI, I wonder if it could run in the female line. It's something to think about. Best of luck to everyone.

I was on the pill for about three years, the last year and a half with it I was actually having sex with my current boyfriend. For the last year I was on it I had frequent UTIs... Once I got off the pill and started taking cranberry pills everyday, I have been free of UTIs. I was hoping that I could get an IUD but wanted to do research about how they're related to UTIs. Now I'm worried about getting one in and I'm just convinced I can do nothing but condoms for the rest of my life. :(

I had the same issue.. 3 infections in a month. I was convinced it was the IUD because I had not had these issues prior.. my doctors insisted it was not the IUD but after reading posts from other people's experiences I chose to have it removed.. not worth the risk in my opinion. I'm so glad people write in and discuss because it reassured me that my gut instinct is probably correct.

THANKs for starting this. I also had recurrent UTI, also bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections. Upon removal I had one more infection then it all stopped. The doc removed it with reluctance, also thought it was not related. There are research studies on this though. Not many, but it's early. I recommend getting it removed if this is happening to you, because my vagina took a while to recover - some inflammatory pain still occurs from time to time and for a long time I couldn't pee normally - just short streams. Thank god I am mostly back to normal two years after removal.
