I've had constant UTI's since my IUD was inserted. I'm constantly exhausted, low back pain, irritable, low patience, etc. None of this happened before the IUD. I'm making an appointment to have it removed! Where do you send it to be tested for E Coli?? How much does that cost???

Not sure on the cost. I'm hoping to get more details at my appointment. Has anyone sought the advice of an attorney? It can't JUST be a coincidence that these are affecting so many of us this way. My insurance did not cover the cost so I had to pay over $500 out of pocket to get it....I would at least like to get my money back. Not to mention the hundreds of dollars I have spent on doctor visits, and prescriptions.

I have had a IUD (Merina) in for two years and about 7-months ago I started getting UTI. I have been on three rounds of anti biotics but UTIs keep coming back. I too have thought it could be the IUD but was told by my gyno it could not be. I am 42 years old, single and have only (sadly) only had sex twice in the past 7 months. Sex does seem to trigger a UTI but I am not sure sex is the cause.

I too am sad over this. I had really heavy periods and got the IUD to help stop long painful periods and it worked. I will definitely miss that perk to the IUD but I am so tired of the UTI's.

I'm baffled because I have had my IUD for 11 years and had no UTI's or any other infections. However, I just got it removed and it came out positive for E. Coli? Can anyone explain that?

Oh my gosh, I am also grateful to find this thread!! I got my Merina a year ago and 8 weeks later......UTI. Now chronic UTI. My doctor has me on antibiotics after intercourse. I was also told by doctor and gyno that there is no link ~ well, I would say there is proof in numbers. Thank you for sharing your stories. It stinks that there are not a lot of contraceptive options out there for women >40. Does anyone know if the IUD can be tested for E. Coli without being removed?

Yeah, also very happy to find this thread. I've only had an IUD for 6 months but since getting it in I've had the first UTIs of my life, the latest one being a kidney infection. I'm getting it out now before I have to buy yet another antibiotic prescription. Eff this device. Also sad coz I was excited about having hormone-free birth control. One of my guy friends was nice enough to apologize on behalf of his gender for making us go through this sh*t.

This thread and my experience has also really opened my eyes to how little doctors know about the female anatomy.

I have chronic UTI's that I've gotten since I started being sexually active. I discussed my desire to get an IUD with my OB and asked how that would affect getting UTI's. I tried the sponge once and had the worst UTI of my life. She informed me that I would be putting myself at risk of getting UTI's more often because an IUD can affect the pressure your uterus puts against your bladder which can cause an infection. So it's not necessarily the device that's causing it but the placement of it.

I'm still undecided on what to do but thought I would contribute what I've been told.

I got my first uti couple of weeks ago; took cipro for 10 days; again this week developed another uti infection. All this while I have been having painful back pains. Based on this thread finally today I got my IUD removed after 7 years. It is going to be cultured. Dr. has given me augmentin for 3 days I am hoping the pain in back will go away. After you'll removed your IUD after how many days did you'll feel relief from uti symptoms.

WOW! Reading all these stories has really got me thinking.....I am 24 (never been preggers), just recently got the copper IUD (about a week ago, and it was very painful) but I already have a history of extremly frequent UTIs, so why did the doctor not mention any risks involved?!?!?!! The doctor told me it was okay to have sex by now, so we have tryed, but it's not the same, if anything hits the cirvex it slightly painful and uncomfortable. This is very concerning.... I think I may take it out before it starts to really effect my adversly.... does anyone else who has had ferquent UTIs prior to the IUD have any feedback? ?

I have had my IUD for several months now and I am experiencing my first UTI since insertion. Trying to figure out why I would have one since I have not had intercourse since October and don't have problems with them on a regular basis. I thought I would google it to see if there is a connection. Wow - thanks for starting the thread here! Also, someone asked but I never saw an answer...can the device be tested for e coli without being removed??

What kind of IUD's are you experiencing these UTI symptoms with? Mirena (hormonal) or Paragard (non-hormonal)? I was on the Nuvaring and had chronic UTI's, yeast infections, crushing chest pain and Bacterial Vaginosis. I was told that the PH levels in your vagina can be thrown off when using hormonal birth control that stay in your vagina for an extended period of time (Mirena, Nuvaring) but that the Paragard IUD shouldn't have those side effects...However I'm still experiencing blood in my urine and UTI's with my Paragard IUD. Is anyone experiencing chronic UTI's or other vaginal problems with the non-hormonal Paragard IUD?

I have the mirena IUD, I am 24 years old, and have a 6 month old son. Getting the IUD put in after my son was born was almost as painful as childbirth...when the dr. "clamped" my cervix I thought I was going to die! I have had extreme lower back pain (to the point of tears), and SEVERE UTI's that only go away for a few days before rearing their ugly heads again. Every time I call the nurse she says "it could take a year for your body to adjust to your IUD" so I thought I was the one who was crazy and was going to give it time. Yea right! After reading this I am calling and making an appointment NOW. There is no need for this pain. I had no history of kidney infections or UTI's/back pain until I had my IUD put in. TOTALLY not worth it.

I had my Mirena fitted in May 2009 and have had numerous UTIs since then, Yeast infections galore, and almost constant discomfort. Even the leaflet they gave me links these problems with the coil but the doctors really do not understand. I have had other problems too that I associate with the coil and many other women on other sites have said they do too. Basically, the coil has made me utterly miserable and I can't tolerate it any more. I have just booked to have it removed next week after months of deliberation. I have followed all of the rules to the letter to avoid UTI but still get them - soooo painful. I know it's not me, and reading these posts makes me realise I was right all along. I am now put off by any hormonal contraception as they all have an effect (none as bad as this though).

I got my IUD after I had my daughter, a little over 2 years ago. I have had many UTI's, usually get them about every 2 months. Very painful, and they are usually so bad that I have blood in my urine. I plan on having another child in the future, but I dont want another right now, I WANT to get the IUD removed because it is causing to many problems, but I dont want to get on the Depo because of weight gain, and I dont want to get on the pill because I will forget them. I was told that if I have to many UTI's it can lower my chances of getting pregnant in the future. Its a VERY hard and important decision to make on what kind of birth control to get on, just make sure you look up every method and you really want what you decide to go with.... GOOD LUCK!

I have had my Mirena for 1 month. I got it to hopefully correct problems with heavy persistant bleeding. Almost immediately following my 1st intercourse since it was placed, I have symptoms of a UTI. I have not had a UTI in, probably over 10 years (maybe more)...can't even remember the last one, but once you've had one, you never forget the feeling.

Of course, I immediately wondered if there was a connection between the UTI and my new IUD. I decided to look into it and that is how I found this thread.

It is frustrating to hear that this is a problrm for so many and that doctors seem to think that the women reporting these problems are crazy...even after E-coli contamination has been found in many of these cases.

I have to believe that there are many similar cases out there that are going unreported or undiagnosed.

My next stop was the Mirena information Website where I found this encouragement:

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA.

Visit
or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

perhaps we should all start reporting our problems with UTI's so this goes on record somewhere and doctors stop calling us crazy
