I also have paragard and in the short month and a half I have had it in have had two UTIs which have been my only ones ever. I was/am really worried about this but it is a huge relief to see that other women are experiencing these symptoms and that I'm not alone. I already feel like another one is coming on and I have been off my medicine for only two days! Its so frusterating!! I also wish I knew about this before I got my paragard hopefully this will help someone else before making the decision!

On the plus side it is really nice not to have to have to remember a pill everday!

I am so glad to find this site. I am 30 years old and have had 3 children . I decided to get the copper iud during my postpartum visit because i havent decided yet on any more kids. I got it about 2 months ago.I have had nothing but problems since then and i am having it removed tomorrow. About two weeks after having it inserted i had painful intercourse and when my obgyn pushed in the middle of my lower pelvic area it was really painful.I told my doctor i thought i had pid because i had the symptoms and an iud can cause pid. She just looked at me like i was stupid and said that an iud wouldnt cause pid but it does. The pain finally did go away on its own but i still have vaginal discharge.Well about a week after that problem occured i got a uti and they gave me bactrim which got rid of it atleast for about a month and now im getting another one. There is probably a lot of people out there having the same problems that havent found this site.Something needs to be done abouth this . These doctors think they know it all and they dont know sh*t

I also haven't had a UTI for years and just got one about a month and a half after getting the Paraguard. It happened just after I had sex with my boyfriend for the first time after getting the IUD. We are long-distance, so which is why I hadn't had sex for all that time after getting the IUD. Since he wasn't a new partner, and since I haven't had a UTI in so long, I have to think the Paraguard has something to do with it. I'm going to see my doctor.

Other strange side effects: extreme pain during sex when there was pressure on my cervix. This may also have been because I was starting my period, however. We kept having sex over the next few days, however, and there was no more pain. And I've also noticed that my period is extremely heavy, and it's more "watery" than usual, maybe similar to what someone else here mentioned about having more watery discharge. Hopefully it will normalize because this is my first real period after getting the IUD.

Also, my boyfriend and I used to not mind having sex when I was on my period. However, sex on my ridiculously heavy period now was a DISASTER. The bed looked like a crime scene. BEWARE!!

I can't believe I found this site! I have had a copper IUD for 8 years (good for 10) and this past year I have had experiencing tons of UTI's! They seem to be happening only after sex. I will go a few months without sex and no problem. Also there are a number of times I have had sex with my partner and not got them. The UTI's are so bad that I bleed when I urinate. I went to the doctor the first time it happend and they couldn't find an infection. So I am afraid to go back only because I don't have health insurance.
The UTI's go away if I drink plenty of water and take those over the counter cranberry pills. I have been so depressed thinking something might be terribly wrong with me and now I know why! I want to thank all of you for sharing your stories. This IUD is OUT OF ME! Thank you!!!

I have been dealing with the same issues since I got my IUD (mirena) put in in Feb '10. I have always been prone to UTIs since I was a child so it was not a surprise to me that the IUD would trigger the familiar burning. However, like most of you have discovered, the doctors DO NOT believe that the IUD is the cause! I am completely aggrivated that we do get laughed at when we mention the connection.

However, I really wanted to post because I think I may have a suggestion that could help some of you without having to remove the IUD. Like most of you, other forms of birth control do not agree with me and this to me is my last hope and I REALLY want it to work.

NOw, when I start getting that burning/tingly feeling and the burning when I urinate I immediately assume it's a UTI. I went to CVS and bought one of those home tests, and each time it came up "trace" and was not saying I had a full blown UTI. When I went to the Dr. and they tested the urine they told me that it also came up negative. Yet, I'm in bed in tears because it's burning - and not just when I am going to the bathroom.

I started taking cranberry pills.

This has helped TREMENDOUSLY. I know for some of you not wanting to take a pill is one of the reasons for choosing the IUD but I am certain that it has warded off the pain. I take two pills twice a day - every day. That is important. My bf is away for two weeks a month at work and I was forgetting to take the pills during the time he was gone. Once he was home and we were having sex the burning came back. I started the pills up again and am happy to say that I am feeling fine.

I hope that helps some of you. I read some of you take the cranberry pills to get rid of it, but I would try making it like a vitamin you take daily and see if it doesn't help.

I am so happy to find this site and that Im not the only person dealing with problems with the iud. I had mine inserted 19 months ago 6 weeks after my 2nd child was born. Im young (23) and know i still want more kids but i plan on waiting sometime.
Every since i got my iud put in i have had abnormal periods, some last 1 week some last 3. Its never heavy (a pantyliner) is good enough. Sever headaches that just wont go away. In the past 2 months i have had 2 yeast infections and never had any before in my life. I have constant cramp like symptoms on my left side.
Im going in 2 days to have it removed and to try a different form of birth control. I have tried the pill and patch before but i seem to have prolonged periods.

Has anyone ever tried the shot after the iud was removed?
Im also at the point where i will just have another baby and then mu husban can get fixed cause birth control doesnt work good for me!!

I have had my IUD in for 18 months now and i have had about 10 UTI's. It seems that every time i go to the doctor and get it takin care of a month later i have another one. I also asked my doctor if it had anything to do with my IUD and he said no. he has done blood work on me sent off urin samples and everything. But he still can't figure out why i continue to get them. I never even had a UTI until i got pregnant with my son and i had two during my pregnancy, but 10 in 18 months is awful. I have to go to the doctor for another UTI today. And then i think i'm going to call and set up an apointment with o.b. to have this removed thanks to all of the wonderful comments i have read. THANKS.....

I had mirena put in in 08 and have had uti's almost every month. I related it to intercourse as well thinking my more "busy" weekends with my bf were to blame. Today I have yet another uti! I had started to think several months ago this may be related somehow to my iud. I also started to have a foul odar and slight discharge and I have never had this type of issue. I had tried so many OTC feminine products to fix what I thought was a ph issue with no relief. Today after trying to make an apointment with my ob and being told I would need to wait five days for an opening I went to the er and had it removed. I'm so glade to have cone across this thread and know I'm not alone or going crazy. And that I'm not "unclean" :-( it's so embarrassing to be having these issues and I hope having my iud removed will fix all these issues

When i got my iud back in 2007 i couldn't decide what to get the copper t or mirena. i was told by acouple of doctors that all that is said here is true about the copper t. So, i got mirena. overall i love it never had one problem with it and i don't see a difference in my uti's i get them like clock work since 1996. 11 years before i got my iud but i have to say they have changed since the iud. I don't feel anything until i urinate! and when i do i feel like i am going to pass out!
I have been to numerous doctors/urologist no one has any conclusions!

Hi all

I've read many of your posts and as a health professional I wanted to look at the evidence. At least one paper I found at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17602420 does show a link.

The authors conclusions are 'Use of an IUD is a risk factor for urinary tract infection and should be considered, especially in women with recurrent urinary tract infections'

The citation is Fallahian et al, (2005) Asymptomatic bacteriuria in users of intrauterine devices. Urol J. 2(3):157-9 in case your doctor asks!

What I'm going to do is ask for an IUD culture to be sent to see if it grows E Coli. Then and only then will I consider getting the IUD out.

Good health one and all!

I'm really really glad i've found this site. I had the mirena coil inserted back in March '06 and got my first uti in Oct '06 and then again in December. After generally feeling unwell I decided to have it removed in Jan '07. For the past 4 years the uti's have carried on coming thick and fast. I've been to 3 hospital's having numerous test's done and they have found nothing. I have got to the stage where I am desperate to find an answer. I have become immune to alot of the antibiotics that they give you and haven't been infection free for the last year. It occured to me to ask when I had the coil fitted and it seems very strange that I had never had a uti until after having the coil fitted. After reading this thread it's making it seem more and more likely that this is the cause. I am going to ask my specialist if there is a chance that part of the coil could have been left inside me when they took it out. Anyway I will keep you in touch as to what they say.

If anyone else is going through similar please get in touch.

Yet another similar experience to add - I am 22 years old and had the IUD ParaGuard inserted on the 13th of December 2010. Never before have I dealt with UTIs.

Two to three days after insertion I began urinating more frequently, but because there were no burning sensations or blood in my urine, I blew it off (and what a dumb thing to do; if your body is off track then more times than not, something is wrong). The following week I began to develop cramps, or what I thought to be cramps. About two weeks later, the cramps became more severe and because I was anticipating cramps (as mentioned by my OB/GYN) I brushed them off, that is till about 5 hours later. The pain became so bad I had to go to the emergency room and what do you know a severe kidney infection! During the visit, I mentioned to the nurse that I couldn't help but to think it had something to do with my IUD seeing how the frequent urination followed two days after its insertion. She laughed and told me that the two regions were not connected in anyway. Not convinced, I began my search on the internet and what do you know, I found this discussion and was relieved to find that there are others out there experiencing and believing the same thing. Experience proves otherwise; there must be a correlation between IUDs and UTIs! I am going to schedule an appointment to consult my OB/GYN about the subject and possible removal.

But do not think that the only reason is due to the infection. My period just ended and it was more gruesome than ever. For 3 days the cramps were unbearable (5 hours at a time for the 3 days), not to mention the flow. During these 5 hours of cramps I went through a Super Plus tampon within 40 minutes. I swear after the period I had used more than a box or two of tampons. And because of this I felt fatigued. My thoughts are that if these periods persist, I will become anemic. I am a student expecting to move to the dorms in a few short weeks - I would not be able to go about my days normally with such periods!!! :?

Back to the infection - I will ask the OB/GYN if it is possible to test for E Coli without removing it, perhaps through a urine sample, or something of that nature. If not, I am going to have it removed and tested. I do not want to be one of those women who deal with reoccurring UTIs because of the IUD, or because of what some think to be the IUD :)

Stay strong and good luck to the rest.
