I went to my OB/GYN today for chronic UTI and bladder infections and to inquire about my IUD possibly being the culprit. I've read these posts and am highly concerned about my IUD being the problem. She checked and said my strings were actually long. She cut them down and said that could possibly be the problem. Has anyone else had this happen before? I have not heard of long strings causing UTIs. I can't find anything anywhere about this.
I had the Mirana IUD put in about three weeks ago. I suffer from UTIs two or so times a year so I am vigilant about hygiene as well as urinating before / after intercourse (sorry if to much info) because it is so painful. Everything was fine (beside the occasional cramping) until last week. I woke up in the middle of the night with the wonderful UTI symptoms. Just when I started thinking how great it was not to have to remember to take birth control as well hopefully increased sex drive. I went to my regular physician and was prescribe antibiotics but three days into it I haven't had relief like I usually do with meds. I have been searching the internet to see if anyone thought that the IUD was linked with UTIs and came across this post. Thank you so much for all the posts bc I am going to give it a week. If I still feel the pain / symptoms I will visit my GYNO for a removal. Thanks again...I dont feel so crazy / paranoid.
I had my youngest son in august of 09 and six weeks later i got my iud (copper). I have never ever had a problem with yeast infections, urinary tract infections or anything related to this... but the last 2 1/2 months i have had 5 uti's. I am so tired of hurting all the time that i don't even want to have sex with my hubby because i am afraid it's going to hurt. On top of all this i was diagnosed with depression 4 months ago and i can't believe that the two aren't related. I go back in 2 weeks to have another ua to see if the infection is cleared up and have my iud taken out and after seeing this i am going to have it sent off to be tested. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I've had an IUD for about 7 months now and I've never had a UTI in my life until now. I took antibiotics and it came right back again. Not to mention the constant bleeding! I think I may get one week a month without bleeding. I am glad I read all of your stories because I thought the UTI's were coming from the IUD but couldn't figure out how the two could be linked. Thanks everyone! Mine is coming out this week.
I am wondering if any of you ladies can offer feedback about life after your IUD. Everyone on this thread says they are going to get their IUD removed, but I'm wondering if you have yet, and if so, have your chronic urinary tract infections gone away? I, too, get a UTI every time I have sex--it it utterly traumatizing--and have been blaming it on the sex but maybe it is my IUD (copper). I would like to get mine removed, but want to know if removal actually solved the problem?
I had the copper IUD inserted May 19, 2010, and am having it removed this Thursday (May 12th).
I grew up with UTI's. It was something that I've always had to deal with. When I reached my 20's they seemed to have calm down. I am now 30, and have had more UTI symptoms this past year then ever before.
I've been on post intercourse antibiotics, Cipro, etc. this past year. Ultimately, I strongly believe my IUD is giving me UTI symptoms even when I'm not testing positive for an infection. This is brought on by intercourse, which is unfortunate since the whole reason for getting the IUD was so my husband and I could be more carefree, since I don't do well with hormones.
After reading this, I will definitely have my IUD tested once it's removed, and update the forum.

Kristen, it is interesting to hear that you've always been vulnerable to UTI's, and yet they got worse when you had the IUD inserted. Its also interesting that you feel phantom symptoms even when you don't have a UTI. Both of these apply to me as well, and so I am very curious to hear how your removal goes. I hope you keep us updated and good luck on Thursday!
Scary! I have had 2 severe UTIs in the past 6 months. THe first one had no symptoms until I was vomiting continuously for 2 hours every 10 minutes. THe second one, also no traditional symptoms, I passed out at Whole Foods. I never considered that it might be my IUD, but now I'm wondering. I'm going into my gyno next week.
I had my IUD removed this morning. My OBGYN did an exam on me before hand. When she was feeling around, she triggered a LOT of pain. I told her how bad that hurt, and she replied with "that's your bladder". This caused her to thinks I could have interstitial cystitis (this is when a bacteria inbeds itself into the bladder lining, causing inflammation and pain). Treatment is a series of doctor's visits where they pump antibiotics into my bladder via a catheter. No thank you!
My husband is an RN. A damn good one, might I add. I told him this when I got home, and he immediately googled "interstitial cystitis + IUD"
Long story long, I am so allergic to any sort of metal. Always have been. I cannot wear earrings, even for 10 minutes. Necklaces I can tolerate longer... for maybe an 8 hour work day. So, I'm crossing my fingers that I have a copper allergy, and not this god awful bladder lining infection.
I feel pretty sheepish that I didn't even consider this before I got a piece of copper lodged up the most sensitive area on my body. But, live and learn, right?
Hope this helps somebody.

I know many women who are done having kids ranging from early thirties to over 45 that have had the procedure done that you no longer have a period and if successful as I have heard it is not for all...they did not get periods and did not get pregnant.
I called my Mom she said it's a type of abrasion they can do. She is trying to get me the actual medical name of it.
She called me back it's called Ablasion...not sure how to spell it
I had my IUD removed. Since, I haven't had any UTI/bladder infection symptoms. It's my belief, through research, that my body was very sensitive to the copper IUD, and it was causing the Interstitial Cystitis.
I say, do your research and ask questions. I cured my IC by drinking 1tbsp of Turmeric in hot milk twice a day for 2 days (my Indian friend recommended this). Turmeric is great for inflammation. That's all IC is: inflammation of the bladder.

Hi.
I am suffering from the same thing.
Ive been in denial, as many of you have too.
There is empirical proof that iuds are linked to utis.

And like at least one of you have mentioned, the common bacteria is E Coli.
Not cool.
Im getting mine removed as soon as possible.
I have been researching non-stop about yeast infections linked to IUD's and didn't have much luck until now. I'm so glad to know I'm not crazy and it's not just me. I've had the IUD for almost 2 years now and for the past year and a half I've had an infection what seems like on a monthly basis. I had my last pap-smear about 6 months ago and mentioned it but of course it was brushed off because my pap came back normal. This has taken a toll on my sex life and I've tried about every preventative measure such as changing my diet, wearing cotton underwear, used dermatologist recommended detergents, have taken probiotics, you name it and I've tried it. Reading this proves what I suspected! I plan on having this removed ASAP! Thank you for sharing!
I have a PID(pelvic inflammatory desease) and i also think it was from a IUD i had for only a year because i felt discoumfert the OBG tried 3 times when he was only to try once because my uterus was tilted, i have taken like 6 different antibiotics, a month ago and i feel the pain again, so i made an appointment with new OBG in a different city. i got the IUD taken out 2009 ever since i had pain 3 months ago i was diagnose with PID. I agree with ur post.
Sex can cause a UTI due to the fact that when having sex, the man can push bacteria from the vagina into the urea, due to the so called (wetness or also called female ejaculation).
