I'm again sorry for the late reply; I don't check this page often. The surgeon replaced the part that goes down into the leg, leaving the "ball" part in place. He typically uses a shorter, smooth "spike" (the x-ray tech took the pictures and said "you had Dr xxx, didn't you") I guess he's well known for using the smaller piece. The THR was anterior and I didn't start feeling the pain until the 3rd month when I when back to work. For me, the pain occurred whenever I moved my leg towards my torso. So if I was lying on my back, say, and did heel slides it would hurt like the dickens. Then it progressed to whenever my thigh turned slightly outward, and then finally one day at work they had to carry me to my car; I couldn't put any weight on it.
I don't blame the surgeon; my bone just didn't grow around the appliance and anchor it like it was supposed to. So, for the revision, he pulled it out and replaced it with a longer, textured piece. It was a posterior approach, which is way different than the anterior.
As I understand it, about 5% of THR fail for one of 3 reasons, including "loose". DON'T FEEL LIKE A FAILURE (although I understand the feeling. I felt it too). It's just one of those things.

I am 4 months post total hip replacement and have pain 24-7. I am totally lost. I went to therapy for two months. That was my limit until Jan 1, 2021. I am seeing my doctor tomorrow. Suffering everyday

Good luck with that! He will just tell you that was the chance you took in getting a hip replacement.

I had left mini posterior total hip replacement August 2021 and it has been a nightmare. Two trips to the ER, the doctor disappeared on vacation after the surgery so no help from him. 25 lbs of swelling caused a lot of pain and a water pill helped immensely... had to figure that out myself. Didn't need anything but Tylenol for pain after that. PT eventually made my other hip hurt terribly but they broke down scar tissue build up in my op hip. 3 months out I hurt so badly, quit PT, and got cortisone shots in both hips and it helped a lot and I have been very careful not to stress anything. 5 months out I am in agony again and can't get more cortisone shots until three months minimum have passed. So, I am living on pain meds like Tylenol, Naproxen and CBD cream until next month. I have a long ugly scar and a lump of fat above the scar and a caved in area below. The surgeon and his PA have no clue what to do when hip surgery doesn't work out. So I guess I may be stuck in a pain, cortisone and pain pill cycle for the rest of my life. I can barely walk and have terrible balance now. This surgery either works or it doesn't.

I have a round brown circle on my gluteus following hip replacement. They also gave me radiation therapy the same day after surgery on the joint, surgeon said to remove 'fragments'. 12 months later I have the same circle. Any ideas why?

4 months after hip replacement there is a shooting pain in my thighs. I was walking fine for the last 2 months. My doctor says x-ray is fine. What can cause this? I haven't been able to put weight on my leg for the past two days.
