Hi Guys,
I am very worried about this lichen sclerosus thing which i keep hearing about as one of the symptons include cracking/ splitting of the vulval area and its now scaring the sh*t out of me.
my little paper cut like things on my vagina came after what was a really bad bout of thrush, which was caused by burning myself 'down there' with hair removal cream.(silly me) i've now been getting on/off yeast infections for a year and also these nasy little cuts around my labia. i only have one or two, always in the same places. which seem to open up when i have a slight bit of irritation. i haven't had a yeast infection since i have been on a new contraceptive pill although i am still prone to itching and inflammation.the skin splits really easily but also heals really easily with canesten or vagisil.
i've been to my doctors numerous times now, each to have the same old swab taken, with the same results coming back which says theres yeast there (whoop-de-do)
as i previously said i'm worried bout this lichen sclerosus thingy, my doctor is useless and i'm seeing another one on monday who i am going to mention this lichen sclerosus business to her. The doctors have been really negligent and i'm worried that its more than a yeast infection.
If anyone has any more info, please please get back to me, as this whole situation is really getting me down :-(
Many thanks

Has anybody tried coconut oil for the labia cracks because it works for me.
This is how i do it i use warm water to wash the area pat it dry apply cocnut oil and dab it off for the day time. At night i do not dab it off. I believe coconut is natural and harmless as it is not applied to the inside just on the labia and as it is natural we can use it as often as we like. And it is not expensive either and no doctor prescription needed.
For me the cracks heals after just 24 hrs of applying it. Just make sure you apply cocnut oil after every time you go to pee cause when we use paper towel we practically wipe out the oil to and because it hurst we do not clean is good enough to remove all the residual pee from the area which actually makes it harder to heal. Try to wash the area with warm water as many times as possible. I know it won't be possible to wash one self at work.

Same problem here! However my problem has only affected one side, but for over 10 months it has gone from extreme discomfort to almost gone, then back to extreme discomfort. Been to my doctor multiple times, tried the steroid cream with no "cure". Mine first started after vaginal surgery, don't know if that had anything to do with it, but the timing seems odd. I also have had every STD test possible (even though I have been married for 20 years) and have changed soap, detergent, feminine hygiene products and underwear, including switching to thigh highs to avoid additional irritation from full length nylons.
I am going back for another visit with another OBGYN and have actually begun to document (photograph) the problem as it is at its worst so that they don't think I am exagerating. Will let you know what I find out.

This all sounds very similar to my problem. Im making an appointment with my OBGYN soon so hopefully Ill have the answer. When i called to ask I told yer how much it itched but hurt really bad at the same time. When wiping (after I go #1)...it burns and itched and I end up wiping very hard to itch it. If you guys are doing this too, it may beome harder for the skin to heal and it will heal a lot slower. Also since it is very moist down there, cuts are going to be longer to heal no matter what. It also may be a pad or pantie liner. try not using it for a little while just to see if that is the problem. I have very sensitive skin and I cannot wear the scented pantie liners and so i stopped wearing them and switched brands and the dry skin and itching is much better.

I was just reading mayo clinic's website (which is obviously very reliable) about Lichen Sclerosus. I know that isn't what mine is, and I think a few others on here can maybe quit worrying--another main symptom of it is having white, wrinkly patches all over your body which I don't have...as well as other symptoms that don't make sense. It also says that it can heal on its own, without treatment.
Have any of you ladies thought about hormones playing a role in this strange problem? I have had some problems with my hormones the last 6 months, changing that is, and my pms symptoms becoming more severe and etc. (actually think it is pmdd.) another girl said that she had cracks in the corners of her mouth---and i get those too!!
I feel like it HAS to be related to hormones and the regulation of yeast and etc. Because mine ALWAYS happens at the same time--a few days after my period. that is why i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I actually just put petroleum jelly on mine, since it is unscented and etc. It seems to help me--mine isn't the problem of too much moisture, i don't think there is enough! Or my body just does what it can and after a few days it seems to get better on its own.
I also sugar plays a huge role in these kind of symptoms. My best friend had repeating yeast infections for over a year, (at least that's what her doctor kept telling her they were) and she was only 23. Soon after she found out she was diabetic, and took sugar almost completely out of her diet. Now she hasn't had one since. Just a thought.
good luck ladies! isn't being a woman wonderful 8-|

This is such a common problem and it get is worst the older you get. I have had several different answers from doctors. Most often, I am told that this is a symptom of a yeast imbalance - infection. Across the counter medications for yeast have actually make these symptoms worse for me. The one day - "prescription" pill has been great. Also, neosporin - polysporin - zinc creme.
After having a hysterectomy, my GYN told me that this was caused by the lack of ESTROGEN and Progesterone in my system. I now take HRT and I have been using an estrogen creme - "Estrace". Also, stay as active sexually as possible to keep your body naturally lubricating...with a partner or without. Lubricate before your sexual experience to help the skin to not tear due to the pressure on the outer vaginal skin and labia.
I also have used "natural" cremes from the healthfood store. Wild yams(estrogen) and progesterone creme. I take "Slippery Elm" and "Evening Primrose" pills. You can go in and read about "womens health - symptoms" in the books they have at the store and see all of the others suggested natural alternatives...or go on line to research.
WEBSITE: has many good articles about vaginal dryness and cracking...things to do and what to avoid. (Example....eat yogurt, cut out a lot of your sugar and yeast product intact. Don't use perfume - lotions - powders in the genetial areas. Don't use colored - dyed products such as toilet paper - tampons - pads or harsh perfumed detergents.
In regard to the one entry about the "ulcerated area". It sounds like that person may have a herpes outbreak and needs to be tested before they spread the virus to their sexual partner(s). VALTREX is an excellent prescription used for coldsores and genetial herpes to alleviate the symptoms and outbreaks of ulcers.

I also have the same problem, but I believe mine is from a yeast infection which I cannot seem to clear up. I take an antibiotic daily for acne, which in turn gives me the yeast infection. If I wipe to hard, my skin splits those small cuts, like paper cuts, that sting like crazy and bleed a little. I use the cream prescribed for yeast infections and it helps to clear them up. I'm still working on trying to clear up the yeast problems.

Get tested for STD's ...I was married for 4 years when I came down with HSV-2. I was also pregnant with our second child when I had my first outbreak. Just because your married doesn't make you safe...You never know who your partner has been with in the past (or present) and if they are just fortunate enough to not have outbreaks.I was devastated by the news- because I have always been in a monogamous relationship and I was pregnant at the time. I too- get the skin split usually before that time of month. It is better to be tested and know because there are things you can take/use that will help curb some of the discomfort..

I have dermatitis / psoriasis - and sadly, one of the areas it effect is my labia. it will only get very, very, sore if an underlying infection such as a yeast infection interacts with it making it super itchy. I also have scalp, nose, breast, pitted nails, ears, and creases on my nose and chin effected. :-(
I've had it for years - seen various gyno's and dermatologists (i had to get over my shyness really quickly!). I use a mild topical steroid my derm prescribed that helps so much! I use it twice a day when it's bad, then don't have to use it for a while. I can use one application when i notice it getting dry.
So, if you have dermatitis or psoriasis don't think u might not get it on your labia too. Hope that helps!

i have this problem all the time! every month it seems.. it makes everything uncomfortable! I have a cracked skin area on one side that always comes back and now a small crack on my upper fold also! Its driving me crazy! I was also told it was a yeast infection, but I dont think it is...I have had them in the past, and this isnt it. Its only the outer area. I was thinking maybe im really dehydrated or my soap is irritating it? I was also wondering if it may be a hormonal thing, i am on the pill, and have been for a long time...maybe its time I got off it? Anyway, I have been given creams, and used aloe and various other moisturizers, but it always comes back....

Thank you all for posting your experiences. I have occasionally experienced these thin lines of raw skin in the folds of my labia since high school. My docs have always said yeast infection as well. Not a vaginal yeast infection...that is why there isn't the characteristic discharge. It is a labia yeast infection like guys can get on their private parts (jock itch) or anyone can get on their feet or corners of lips, etc. The reason it is so hard to get rid of is that the poisons that kill yeast cells best also kill human cells. Bummer. Anyway, I have not had a bout of this in years, since I started taking really good care of my labia. Gentle unscented soap rinsed off really well, unscented Kiss my Face Olive Oil and Aloe moisturizer used sparingly, cotton undies, blot away all traces of pee (rather than wiping), and no disposable products for my period. I use the Moon Cup to catch the flow internally and it is the best! So much more gentle and comfortable than tampons. Instead of disposable pads, I use cloth pads as back up on heavy days. is the place where I buy them and they are infinitely more comfortable than disposables and so much more gentle on the skin. I also eat as healthy as I can, trying to keep the simple sugars in my diet low and natural (no corn syrup!!!)
You may wonder why I am looking this up again if I have figured it out for myself. Sad to say, my little girl had her first case of it today. Hoping she will learn how to take care of her labia really well really fast....it took me years to figure it all out and I think my mom still suffers rather than be embarrassed talking about it (not to mention her sweet tooth....ugh!)
Hope you all find relief soon! LMac

HALLELUJAH! I have been suffering from the same thing that you all have described, same c**p from the doctors, same sad experience with it, and I recently began a CANDIDA CLEANSE!!! Within weeks I am healing. No sugar, no gluten, no alcohol, no caffeine, it's actually much more involved than that. It takes months to cleanse the body of a yeast overgrowth. I am sticking with it since even though the fissures on my vagina are healing if it is yeast it will take months to kill it off. Do the research on the cleanse. I used to eat a LOT of sugar. It's work, but it's changing my life in many ways, I eat better than I ever have! I have energy! My body feels amazing! I hope this helps each and every one of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello! I have had this same problem on and off since late adolescence. So if you're experiencing it, rest easy. My understanding is that this is pretty common and nothing serious or contagious. :-D On a side-note, I have had the same partner for a really long time, regularly get tested for STDs (you can never be TOO sure!), and I have always tested negative.
I have found two things helpful, without even needing to use creams or medicines. First, I've found that when I maintain overall health (e.g. low stress, eating well, not slacking on hygiene) I don't get outer labia sores almost ever. But it is hard for me to ALWAYS be consistent with my health (for whom isn't it?). When I DO get the itchy sores/skin cracks, I've found that keeping myself dry down there is key to healing. I keep the vaginal area especially clean and use baby powder to keep it dry. Almost instantly I feel better and it takes a day or two of a little TLC for the sores to heal up and go away entirely. Oh, a key note- if you're bleeding a little, you want to make sure the sore clots before you apply the baby powder or talc.
I hope this helps!

I know I'm about 2 years late on this topic. But I have the same issues, and I have found that it is eczema in the vulva area. And it can cause cracking. This is a good site for more information: http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletters/Harvard_Womens_Health_Watch/2008/November/Managing_common_vulvar_skin_conditions
