I am so glad I found this forum! I was able to successfully treat this latest skin tear thanks to you all!

Last month during my period I developed a thick patch of peeling skin. I thought it was a yeast infection but with no discharge or itching. I saw my doctor that day. She said that it was eczema, which I do have, but haven't had a break out in years. I'm not sure if its related. She gave me a steroid cream & it went away immediately. She said this dryness can occur during your period, especially when you wear pads or panty liners.

Right after my last period, I discovered a cut or skin tear in the crease of my outer labia. It stung but it wasn't deep. It looked like it had torn naturally & that I didn't cut myself. FYI - I am not sexually active. (That's another story lol) This latest cut made me think it must be dried skin again. I didn't want to go back to the doctor, unless it got worse, so I opted for the advice of this terrific forum. What a relief it was to hear that this was common and treatable & I calmed down enough to find a solution with a product I already had.

I used Vitamin A & D ointment & it healed in no time. A & D is for diaper rash, dry chafed skin & protects minor cuts & burns and can be found at the local drug store. I felt that this product would be appropriate for this delicate area. It felt fabulous, but it is thick & greasy (in a good way!) because it has petrolatum & lanolin in it. I am 43 and I've been noticing changes when I get my period - mood swings, cramps & now this dry skin. Now I will use the A & D during future periods to avoid this dryness. Also, I need to change panty liners much more often & keep that area tended to. Also, the weather has been very hot & that makes it worse.

I always see my doctor for anything unusual but this time the home remedy worked for me and I wanted to pass the information along.

Good health to all!

I've actually been having this issue as well...cracking in my outer labia crease, painful/sensitive perineum that bleeds a little when wiping (not always), and itchy outer labia lips.  These symptoms aren't always present, they come and go.  I discovered something called lichen sclerosus, which is just an autoimmune disorder of the skin...I'm thinking kind of like eczema.  The treatment is steroid ointment (not cream) and is usually really successful.  I think I'm going to discuss this with my doctor and see if I may have this condition.  Hope this helps!

I am 23 and I have also had these symptoms (painful cracks, itching but no discharge, as would be seen with a yeast infection) on and off for a few years. I treated it with a general yeast infection topical medication and it went away, but then came back within a week. It is important to know that I didn't wear underwear. I tried to ignore it and see if it would go away, it got so bad that I went to an urgent care clinic. The Dr. there didn't seem to listen to me and immediately told me he was worried I had HERPES! I was tested... and it came back negative no herpes, but also no explanation for what was going on. Once again I used general topical cream to treat it, STARTED WEARING PANTIES, and it has not come back since. I talked to my CARING gyno and she told me that more than likely it was a bacterial infection, in which one has discharge that can be acidic and with no underwear to absorb any moisture it was just sitting on my skin and literally burning it. She told me it was smart to start wearing panties and the topical cream was probably the best thing to treat it, she said if it came back and the cream didn't work that I could come and get medication that would treat the infection.

It's good to know that I'm not the only person with this problem... I suffer from this chronically. Usually the week after my period is fine though, and then it start again. I have no idea what causes it though. Any one else's information would be greatly appreciated!

It is dry skin. I found something that works soooo well and it doesn't burn. It is called 8 hour cream and it is make by Estee Lauder. It is not really that expensive about $20.00 for a maybe 12 oz tube. I put it on burns too and it works really really well.  I get this when I change soaps, sit in hot tubs, go in really chlorinated pools, change laundry soaps, things like that. If you have sensitive skin this is an area that is going to be affected. I went to a dermatologist and spent a lot of money and tried 4 different creams only to find this worked the best and hurt the least.

Hey ladies!

I went to the doctor for this problem, and it was a yeast infection. Cracked skin all around the outside, white discharge. Discharge also does NOT have to be present! I would go to a Doc and get it checked out.

glad to see I am not the only one!! Been dealing with this since I can remember.. I have found it is usually after I have my period, I wear pads because tampons make me cramp more. The one I have now is about 1 inch and it is very painful. I have found that A&D ointment that I put on my son's diaper rash has helped out tremdously. I have tried OTC yeast creams, they didn't help me. Usually after sex it happens too, I was thinking my birthcontrol lowers my estrogen which in turns makes me not as moist as I should be, therefore I get small cracks in my skin down there. Very annoying... Going to try this A&D ointment hoping it works, I have never been to the doctor for this...If I get another one I will go and see what they say it could be. I have also used neosporin (spelling?)  It helps, just make sure you keep the area clean and dry, pat dry do not rub, use soap and water about 2 times a day. Seems to work for me so far. Good luck ladies!!

Have the same thing, and finally figured out that tampons and pads make it worse...probably due to the ingredients in them. I have had much better luck using Kotex Natural Balance products, even though by the end of the week I still have the problem. Am looking into finding organic/cotton pads that can be ordered online...

I have had this same problem for over 2 years... Like everyone else I went to on/gyn and got no answers and no relief. So I kept researching and found out what I thought I had...went to a dermatologist and she confirmed it. I have Lichen Schlerosis, it is a skin disease. There is no cure but it can be treated. Please google this and read about it and make an appointment with a dermatologist !!! If untreated it can lead to cancer. Please read about it and see a dermatologist!! There is help out them!

If you are having this problem when you are having sex you may want to try using some sort of lubrication, I have this problem when my boyfriend and I dont use a condom and have no lubrication on his penis.

Hi ladies!
I had all of the same symptoms I'm reading about here-tearing, irritation, intense itching, pain, etc. I switched to Scott Brand 1-ply toilet paper and ALL of my symptoms disappeared! I have no idea what is different about the Scott Brand tissue-but-I honestly feel like a brand new person!!! Please try this and I truly hope at least for some of us that the solution to these symptoms is as easily cured as changing toilet tissue!!!

I had a similar problem occur right after I became a vegetarian. I thought the same thing, this must be an inside out problem.
---I have eliminated meat, dairy, wheat, and soy....and the problem doesn't get any better. Not a food allergy.
---I thought it might have to do with riding my bike, but I haven't ridden my bike in awhile. Not the bike.
---I took a special vaginal flora probiotic (50 billion culture), to no avail.
---I thought it was eczema too, but eczema doesn't peal. Maybe a form of psoriasis???
---Maybe my new diet has me expelling a lot of toxins, and my poor skin is reacting? Doubtful since it is only irritated on the outside of the labia.
---I haven't figured the preventative part out yet. However, my reactive solution has been to use witch hazel as an antiseptic (soothes cracks and sores) and Borage therapy advanced formula lotion to soften the dry skin. This works great so long as I do it. As soon as I stop doing it, all the dryness and cracking come rushing back in.
---Lately, I've been wondering if it has to do with an over abundance of oxalic acid. I'm just "grasping for straws" at this point. I really need to visit a naturalpathic doctor, but don't have the money right now.
