I'm experiencing this right now. It's actually kind of fun when it happens; if I stare at something across the room for a while and try to focus on the WHOLE object, then I can actually induce these symptoms. Unfortunately, I can only do this at night, when I'm tired. Watching TV also makes it go away; I remember being terrified of these symptoms when I woke with them in the middle of the night, turning on the TV was always my first solution.
Holy cow I've been having these weird zoom out things all my life. i just had one of these 'experiences' and decided to google it and I found this forum. It happens once or twice a month. I had childhood epilepsy...they said I grew out of it, and as an adult (34) I've been to the doctor 1/2 a dozen times but never mentioned the epilepsy. I am a little afraid the epilepsy never really left...I also have times where I completely space out and will loose 5-10 minutes..not that I pass out but I literally space out...and then I come to the realization that I have no clue what I've been watching, reading, and the really terrifying part is when I'm driving...I realize I haven't been paying attention to the road for several minutes...it's scary.
I've never said this stuff out loud...it's nice to see similar stories.
I cannot believe there is so many people this is happening to. I am just having one of these episodes. I have had them since I was a child. This is the first time I have looked it up and to be honest I've not read all of the the comments. I can tell you that writing this and realising that I'm not alone is helping me to come to. Wow and phew! I've tried in the past to go with the experiences as if they are something spiritual (even though I'm not religious) but after a while it just gets really annoying. I once tried explaining it to a therapist but got no explanation. They just come on randomly - I don't feel over tired at the moment and I don't remember them ever being triggered by a particularly stressful or emotional time in my life. And although they usually happen at bedtime I have had them at random times too. Its so weird - I thought I was alone in this - cannot tell you how it feels to know I'm not. I'll go back and read what others have put. Peace out!
Yup having an episode right now. I seem to get it when I'm tired or concentrating on something visually i.e reading. I've not had one as bad as this in a very long time. I've just come from the kitchen after going to get a glass of water and couldn't tell which glass was a pint glass without comparing it to others up close. When putting it down on the side it looked the size of a thimble. I also suffer from "restless limb" when fatigued so both of these combined makes me look like a nutter when I'm tired. When it gets really bad it can be accompanied by kinesthetic hallucinations, limbs feeling like they are moving very fast/slow, hands feeling larger/smaller, funny sensations in my mouth and even my whole body when I close my eyes. Basically tripping balls. I believe its called Alice in wonderland syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_in_Wonderland_syndrome. I also suffer from migraines if anyone's keeping a tally.
I get that every once in a while too. I can make it happen at will, but making it stop is harder because it will often go away for a few seconds then come back.
I used to get it once or twice a week when reading a couple years ago, but now it only happens once every few months. I find it intriguing and not detrimental in any way, and I've never told anyone about it since it didn't bother me.
after a while searching on internet, i found that is called, alice in wonderland syndrome, or micropsia, you can search it for deeper info. sometimes i feel that things are very far... it bothers a little but, it only last a couple of minutes... i always wonder what it was.
i have this problem too! im only a teen, but it happens frequently, maybe every two weeks
This may sound unbelievable but I read an article about extremely low frequency sounds, caused possibly by a loose fan blade in a vent or air conditioner, having a serious effect on the human body. The event was first discovered by a Russian scientist who was working with certain sounds that are below the range of audible sound for a human. The sounds cannot be heard consciously but still vibrate the eardrum and are detected by the subconcious. What he eventually found was that there exists a frequency that wreaks all sorts of havoc on the person who detects it but cannot hear it including disorientation, an overwhelming sense of dread, and hallucinations. This frequency is emitted during earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, typhoons, hurricanes, even the low growl of a tiger emits a sound at this frequency. Experiments have been done in the UK at rock concerts and the sound frequency is starting to be used for crowd control. There is even a group who will check offices for this sound. In one instance there was a lab, the workers firmly believed it was haunted. There were reports from almost every member of the staff of either disorientation, dread and fear, or actual visions of shadow men. The cause was a loose vent fan. After it was fixed the lab went back to normal. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10848570 http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/1553-possible-explanation-for-haunted-houses/ Also Electro-Magnetic pulse have been found to create real out of body symptoms in patients who undergo the experiment involving that, Im not sure what they're trying to accomplish with that one. http://www.astraldynamics.com.au/archive/index.php/t-7890.html
I have the same problem and have had it since I can remember. I am now 20 and as much as I'd like to say I am used to it, it is still a horrible feeling. I also get a loud ringing sound in my head when it occurs and I feel as though I cannot percieve how far even my own limbs are along with my surroundings. I don't know if this is rellevant but I recently experimented with LSD and it sent me into an aggressive episode of it. I have coped with this my whole life so don't think the acid caused it, I only wanted to mention that as it is interesting because maybe it highlights an underlying mental issue. I would really love to not have to endure these episodes anymore but I would settle for an answer to why it happens at least, I am going to consult a doctor to see if anything is known about it soon but it's hard to put it into words when I try and tell anyone. My Mother and elder Brother have both told me they also suffer from it so maybe it's a genetic fault. If anyone could provide any answers I would really appreciate it, thank you.
Same here, sometimes it make my palms numb for some reason. i fight by closing my eyes and sleeping facing my pillow.
