you know i was just thinking about that, i'm going to go pick up some at lunch :-)
1000 mg a day sounds like a lot! Will this not make you feel ill? What were your levels at?
Adamsmom: Good to hear from you. I agree with Kodger 1000 mg a day sounds like alot. I had to reduce my supplement and it is just 630 mg with 400 IU of Vit D. Are you getting Vit D too? Maybe since your surgery was recent you need that much calcium. Good luck on the chewable type.

I have photo of my tumors and was curious and I am listing what it reads. I had three removed R...168....L...187...129. They don't look big, but since they should be size of grain of rice, guess they are. 780 was a large tumor. What was your PTH before surgery?

We all need to take multi-vitamin, I am going to look for liquid ones. Do they make them?
Good to hear from everyone. Stay in touch...txg
you know i thought that 1000mg was a lot too but i just picked up a box of viativ (sp) chocolate chews at lunch and they are 500mg each and it says to eat 2-3 a day!!! since i haven't taken my pills in a while i ate 2 right away and they were actually pretty good, they just taste like a chocolate chew, so much better then those Oscal horse pills that felt like i was swallowing a piece of chalk. i think i can keep this up :-)

my PTH levels were 216 on Sept 15th and then the morning of my surgery Nov 26th they were 284....they dropped down to 25 after the surgery was over...i'm very happy about that. They reran my calcuim and my PTH last thursday when i went for my post op check but i haven't gotten those results back yet.

The surgeon did say my exhaustion could be from the fact that i'm not sleeping...go figure. I'm a single mom of a 4 year old and since i had my surgery he's been having nightmares and sleeping in my bed so i get no sleep. As my christmas present my parents are going to keep him for a weekend so i can try to recoup my sleep and see if that helps :-)
So Texgranny, why would you need a multi-vit in liquid form?

Kelly got back to me today and wants more labs. I had some drawn last week and some today that i'll send when they come in......won't be till Jan with Christmas and all. Pathetically slow around here. The one lab I sent had ionized cal at 1.34 (1.17-1.32) with a pth of 40. Like I said me PTH is never under 40???????
Kodger: Just have problems with multi-vit as they give me great indigestion. Dr Norman was adamant about me taking them. Probably would help boost my energy. Thought maybe liquid would be better. Normal range for PTH is 10-65, so 40 should be ok.

Are you going to test for MEN1 or wait to hear from Kelly? I actually read some about this last night. Very interesting, but how can it be treated?
My brother is very ill and we are awaiting results from his PTH. I won't be surprised if his is in the normal range. My PTH was always in the low to normal. Not sure what his next step will be.

Hope you get answers soon..stay in touch...txg
Well got lots of blood work back today. PTH was down to 19 in one and calcium was normal. Problem seems to be hypophosphatemia. Causes weakness, cramping etc. This was detected on blood tests prior to my parathyroidectomy and Dr. Norman said these numbers would come up after surgery. They have actually dropped more: 0.64 with the range being 0.81-1.45.
Has anyone out there encountered this?
Kodger: Merry Christmas. Gosh, I have never heard of hypophosphatemia before. Sure will do some research though. Can this be treated with meds? What does your pcp say about this? Happy holidays and stay in touch...txg
Texgranny:
I've seen your posts where you often refer to NEEDING to take multivitamins..................well I heard back from Dr. Norman via email in regards to my hypophosphatemia. His reply said exactly this: " You MUST be on a multivitamin!!!!!!!!!!!"
Do you know if keeping these elements up in our bodies is more difficult after surgery? What did he tell you following your surgery?
Happy holidays!
Kodger:
Dr Norman told me I must take multi vitamins and calcium supplements after surgery. I have been faithful in taking my calcium but not my vitamins. I have gained a lot of weight and thought the vitamins increased my appetite. Needless to say the weight gain was from me being hypothyroid. DUH! He suggested I take Women's one a day and I have started them. The others I took gave me indigestion. These I am tolerating ok.

I have no idea if keeping these elements are more difficult after surgery or not. He sure is adamant about us taking them. This is a question I will put to my Dr on next visit. I can say, the two weeks I have been back on vitamins my energy level is better.

What are your plans? Keep in touch...txg
I've taken a phosphate supplement for about a week and have just switched over to 2 time released multivitamins. We'll see how things go.

Yeah, he (Dr. Norman) seems pretty adamant about taking them.
Kodger: Good luck with the new vitamins. Happy New Year filled with good health and much happiness. Stay in touch....txg
I had parathyroid surgery a few weeks ago and basically feel fine. However, I have been steadily gaining weight since the day after. After the 4 pounds in just a week I significantly reduced my caloric intake. I lost a pound only to gain it back and now a week later gained yet another. Normally, I would have lost a few pounds eating like this. I emailed Dr. Norman about it and he replied the weight gain was unrelated to the surgery and I was cured. However, my weight has not fluctutated more than a couple pounds over the past year and this is the most I have ever weighed (except when pregnant). I suspect something is going on. It's just not normal to suddenly gain 5+ pounds in two weeks-especially when dieting! Too much of a coincidence I think. Has anyone else experienced this sudden weight gain? I'm so frustrated. I want my tumor back! Just kidding.
Texgranny,

Did your brother end up having a parathyroid problem? If so what's the course of action? You had mentioned that he was feeling pretty bad.
Kodger99: Hi, how are you? I contacted my brother last week regarding his health. He is an attorney and is out of town on a large case. I am not sure if he ever had consult with Dr Norman or not. He is not well and is older than me so I hope he will take the time to get these answers. Thanks for asking. Some people don't consider HPT disease to be serious. Hope your health is improving.
