a few years ago my partner had a hernia operation (repair) and he is really worried that we wont ever be able to have kids.
does an operation in such a delicate area and just being the type of operation that it was have any effect on my conceiving?

Not at all. My grandfather had a hernia repair, twice, and this was years ago before all the top notch medical stuff came to be.
He and my gram went on to have 2 more children after his procedure.
