I have the Meriana IUD; according to my OB/GYN, it does not release hormones into the body the way birth control pills do. I have had one in for two years and have had no side effects like I had on birth control pills. It must be different for each person. As far as the gallbladder, I am hungry much more often. I feel like I am eating more than I used to, but according to the scale, I have only gained two-three pounds depending on the day. I have only had it out for five months. I take probiotics and keep Pepto Bismol, Tums, and Alka-Seltzer at work in case I have stomach trouble which is happening less and less. The problem seems to be that I still have a tender spot where my gallbladder was removed. Is that normal? My stomach, which used to be flat, is bloated or something. It particularly doesn't feel the same, and I prefer to wear looser clothing. Can anyone comment on feeling swelling in the belly within months after the surgery or still feeling pain at the removal location? Will it go away?

I haven't read through all the posts after the initial one so it is possible someone has already set the record straight, but just for the sake of getting the right information out there:

Bile helps your body digest and absorb fat from your food.

Bile either comes straight from your liver or from your gall bladder (stores some bile on behalf of the liver).

Without your gall bladder and the bile it stores, your body is unable to manage high-fat meals. If you have too much fat after you have had your gall bladder removed, you can have digestive issues and smelly feces etc. This is because your body isn't absorbing the fat - it is going right through you and you are taking in less fat than you were before.

Your doctor will tell you to change your diet after a GB removal to mitigate the unpleasant GI effects of having low fat absorption (discomfort, smelly poo) and not because you are now more likely to gain weight (because you aren't - you're now absorbing less fat).

Anyway - this is important to set straight because if you're gaining weight for an unknown reason don't dismiss it as the fault of your absent gallbladder. It could just be that you've altered your diet (as the doc suggested) and are now eating foods that are lower in fat but your overall calorie intake is higher (which results in weight gain); I'd go back to your doctor to make sure there isn't something more serious causing it.

I have to agree its got to be the mirena I had one and gained about 20 lbs with it. As far as the gallbladder thing mine is so bad that I can only drink liquids and have lost ten lbs in a week due to this attack. I'm scared to have mine out due to the stories I am hearing on here. Looking at the ages of the women on here do you think that some of the weight gain is the age thing? I noticed most of the women who gained weight on here were over forty. Menopause causes women to gain weight if they are not careful enough with their diet.

Thank you for the info... Along with the other "side effects"; and a Surgeon who lied to me about it not causing gain, I have constant heartburn and am now on Prilosec for life! The thought of liver/pancreatic problems frightens me as well....

does it hurt? No...scar...vert little. It is not like years ago. They go in with a scope and remove what they find. The scar is right above your belly button. I had mine out at sixty five and bounced back the next day. They showed me what was taken out and they were the size of a peach Pitt. I had a kidney stone attack and at that time they found the other stones. I didn't even know I had them but my doctor said that if they had flared up it would have been bad. I feel great and realize now that a lot of my stomach problems were that. Do it and you will feel so much better. Nobody would see a scar unless you want them to. Good luck

Since 2000 I have had a lump on the right side of my abdominals. Just above and of to the side of belly button. I have had extreme pain ( hospital going type pain..never went though. No one to watch kids if I was there), bloating, extreme heartburn everyday( I don't even have to eat anything to get heartburn. If I need to urinate And say I hold it for 5 min until I get home..I get heartburn). It sometimes swells up so much when I bend over and tie my shoes . my rib on right side gets stuck into what ever it is and I have to use my hand and push what ever it is off. Before I had the lump (5'4") i weighed 135...now I am at 195 gained at least 30 of it in less than a year. I exercise alot. 5-6 day week. 1.5-2 hrs a day. cardio, toning, weights. Have not worked out to much the past year though due to this lump in my stomach..being more pain ful than before, causing extremely upset stomach, dissiness, heartburn when i work ab's or due total body workout. Now it is to the point when I need to hold abs to work out I can not hold taught. feels like something is blocking. In the paperiods st year have stopped also...So being extremely concerned. I finally decided to see doctor (1st time in 15yrs) about this problem. They checked thyriod(normal) they check for bladder infection(normal). They sent me for CT scan on the 16th of june. The imaging people told me to call Dr the next day for results. I called the next day. they said they had not recieved them yet ..so okay I waited until friday they 20th. After few hours a nurse calls me back and say's that I have gallstones and the dr was waiting to talk to surgeon and they would get back to me. still no call from dr. but recieved call last week from surgeon. saying i need to have gallbladder removed.....so being really confused. i decided to e-mail dr. since not successful by phone and not really clear what was going on. I asked him what the ct scan result were. and if it gallstones is this what would be causing this big lump (about 3-4" diameter lump) ..his reply was that they seen I have a few gallstones. and they do not know if this is causing the lump or not and that the surgeon was would talk to me about the lump...my dr. is an internal med. specialist......i am so confused....so scared. i don't want to gain anymore weight....went from hourglass to egg on stick....i wonder what other people's insight is or have had similar issues. Plus in the past couple years have been experienceing multiple lumps growing on arms, legs, torsal. they are on joints and tendions.. everywhere....I am only 39. I am not pregnant. .......WQhat is going on with me

ugh.. eating fat does not cause you to become fat. it all depends on the types of fats. i think that's an important thing to distinguish.

Hi, I was 12 when I had my gallbladder removed I am now 16, the surgery itself is not that bad. You will have 3 scars in the abdomin area about 1 mm long and one inside the bell button that is not noticeable, after the surgery you will most likely throw up if u try to get up to fast. The recovery is not that bad no heavy lifting and you will be fine. The whole recovery I only took one of the pain pills that was given to me. Get plenty of rest and you will be fine. As for weight gain you will gain a few pounds in the abdomin area.

I had my gallbladder removed 1/23/2015. I was already overweight but as time went on before GB surgery I started feeling sick every time I ate and was having abdominal pain, I had lost 5 lbs pre-op and then gained 10 lbs post op. I'm assuming the gas used during surgery may had something to do with it. I have been losing since surgery but I also went on a low fat diet and slowing introducing foods back into my diet, however I can only eat small amounts due to feeling bloated quickly. I weighed 170, at pre-op weighed in at 165, post op ( about 4 days after surgery 175) I am back down to 165 and I was a smoker prior to surgery and decided to give that up, happy to report I am still smoke free and I have been losing weight it seems with no problem...can't wait til I can start exercising. I hope and pray that this is an opportunity for me to finally get fit and healthy!

I am wondering the same thing. I had my gallbladder removed 19 years ago. I have always eaten very healthy and always have worked out. The only time in my life that I was pretty much a glutton and did not work out was during my high risk pregnancy. It was my diet during the pregnancy of excessive cheese and meat cravings that I believe caused my gallbladder issue. Prior to the pregnancy, I was a vegetarian. Anyway, fast forward 19 years later. I have maintained my healthy eating and exercise, but can only lose small amounts of weight and since I turned 40, I have gained over 60 pounds that will not go away. I have sought out professional help of which was NO HELP since they immediately decided that I must not be exercising and eating healthy. Upon the completion of the tests of all of my vitals, they were amazed at how healthy I am and do not have traces of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc.... So now the doctors were baffled after 7 months of testing, trials, and diet changes. I am now 48 years old and wear a size 14 and 16. I have never been that big and it is starting to seriously depress me. It does not make sense. If I was not eating healthy and not working out, I could understand. But I am, so I am wondering if my gallbladder removal is in some way impacting the natural order of weight loss. I have logged every ounce of food consumed and its nutrients, I have detoxed. The good thing is I feel great, I run marathons, etc, but I look like a woman that has never worked out in her life and that upsets me.

I had my gall bladder out 27 yrs ago and have struggled to get the weight off but the gall bladder stores bile and concentrates it and when u eat something fatty this bile is released to break down the fat but not having a gall bladder the bile drains straight to the bowel which is well passed the point of fat absorption so this is a weight problem .
