Wow some of these comments are purely ******. Obviously coming from people who've never had a real injury or have experienced back pain.

Anyhoo I've had undiagnosed backpain for over 7 years now. I've done Chiropractors/Massages regularly for many years and Physical therapy but I barely got any relief and it got worse. For the passed 2 years we've been trying to figure out what's been causing it but haven't had any luck after all the specialists I've seen and all the tests I've had done. Over the years it has progressively gotten worse as well. I really can't be active at all, sitting or standing will set it off, even eating food at a table. I try my best to use correct posture and back braces, but nothing stops it. Not even all the pain medications I've been on.

I used to smoke pot frequently in highschool/college before the back pain and had no problems.
After a few years I pretty much stopped smoking it.
A year or two ago I would smoke only on occasion, I would get a little sore but it felt more like I was just really stiff and needed to walk around a little, loosen up or just lay down so I was in a different position.
But lately, it's been bad.

Last weekend I smoked some weed after 5 or more months of not smoking it, a small amount and boy did I end up in a lot of pain. It lasted for as long as I was high and as soon as it started to wear off I felt a little better. 24/7 I am currently on Tramadol and Hydrocodon which don't so too much for the pain other then make me feel less stiff. The high on the weed made me feel 100 times worse I was so incredibly uncomfortable, it was absolutely horrible.

After reading most of these responses and sharing a similar story I wish I could find some valid medical reasoning behind this situation.
Someone needs to study this sh*t.

I knew I couldn't be the only person who experiences pain from pot. I get it from eating it or smoking. If I eat a tiny amount I can rid my intestines of pain and duress from accidentally eating gluten or dairy. But if I eat a smidge too much I get pain in my joints and back. Which is slightly preferable to the intestinal pain. But as for recreational use of pot, no way, not worth the pain. I've never met anybody else with the pain so it was good to find this thread here.

I haven't smoked for more then 10 years, but that was one of the bad things that used to happen to me. I would feel horrible pain in my whole body. At that time I felt that it was due to me becoming aware of the pain that was always there, that I usually just tuned out. After all, who doesn't have minor aches and pains. Pot just amplified those pains 100 times. I also started to feel very paranoid and couldn't interact with people, so I quit smoking and stared doing meditation, yoga ect... That gave me the inner peace I was seeking without any negative side effects. Now I practice a simple meditative practice out of China called Falun Gong. It's done wonders for my health and happiness. Helps with the aches and pains too!

Man, I thought I was alone on this one. When I started smoking pot, it was all happy times, getting hungry, laughing etc. For the last 6 months, my highs have been bad. I get very fidgedy and cant stop moving. as well I feel pain all over my body. Even though I would feel this pain, I would still do it for some reason. When I get to the down side of my high, it usually feels good, so its almost like I would smoke, take the pain, and be able to relax afterwards. Its gotten to a point that Im really thinking about quitting it for good. My back has been wonky latley, and I still get pain. I would tell my friends about this and they sort of could not relate to it. Glad I am seeing other people with similar results. I plan on slowing down with pot and possibly smoking it perhaps on vary rare occasions, and if I do, only a few hits. I miss the good times of pot, but if theres going to be pain, whats the point?

I have had similar experience with smoking.. i have smoked since i was 11 years old and now im 43. the pain will occur in a random muscle and feels like a very bad bruise or sprain. If i have an injury that injury hurts worse. this only started within the last 8 years of use.

If i quit for a week or two then start smoking i can smoke for about a week before a random muscle will become "injured" then i have to stop. out of all the people i know that smoke i am the only one that is affected this way :-(

This is mind-blowing to me. I've been smoking for several years now, like some of you have shared, I too have never experienced any pain up until a couple of months ago which led me to quit smoking weed altogether. The pain runs along my lower back and seems to be persistent up until my high 'dies out'. I tried sharing what I was feeling with a couple of friends and my boyfriend who also frequent smoking, but all of them seemed to question my pain, which lead me to believe I might just be having symptoms of paranoia. I'm so glad to hear I am not alone. This is a real problem and the end of my smoking days (sucks, but the pains not worth it).

I have those exact symptoms. In fact what I googled was " Does pot cause back pain " because sometimes when I smoke pot, it makes my back pain worse. The sensation for me is like " on fire " in the middle of my back. Like right now, for example I'm super baked playing the new halo, when out of nowhere I'm like my back really hurts and I've actually noticed this before when I smoke. Maybe it's te to do some resarch. Anyways there's about three of us that all have similiar symptoms I think it's time Jon Hopkins starts looking in to this issue. Because I play video games way better when I'm high.

Pot and body/muscle pain are absolutely related, although it is less certain exactly how this comes to pass. I have some of these issues myself and from everything I've read on the subject, the commonality is prolonged chronic substance abuse. I'm putting it into these terms because there seems to be this idea out there that weed is completely innocuous and can't hurt you in any meaningful way. It's just not true.

THC is a drug and ALL drugs will harm you if abused for long enough. The reason you don't hear about pot and pain too often is most folks don't smoke it enough to get this effect. Another reason is pot doesn't affect everybody the same way, so not everybody will experience pain. For those that do, here's a summary of supposed physical symptoms of TCH overdose...

Dehydration
Muscle atrophy
Loss of sensation in the arms and hands
Rise in blood pressure (wear and tear)
Dizziness or mild euphoria
Vomiting (usually a brownie involved here)

Bottom line is if you have pain after smoking weed then don't smoke weed. You won't smoke your way past it and it only gets worse over time. THC is a toxin so never underestimate its potential to affect you adversely ;-)

My understanding is that there are two basic different kinds of Marijuana. Indica and Sativa.

***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed

The sativa high is often characterized as uplifting and energetic. The effects of a sativa marijuana are mostly cerebral. They give a feeling of optimism and well - being, as well as providing a good measure of pain relief for certain symptoms(Probably not back pain). A few pure sativas are also very high in THC content. They are known to have a quite spacey, or hallucinogenic, effect. Sativas are a good choice for daytime smoking.

Indicas are known for their smaller stature. They are relatively short and bushy. Some are compact, others are of a more moderate height. Indicas tend to grow wider and rounder than sativas. Many look like small shrubs. Indicas typically grow out many more smaller side colas.

The indica highs are most often described as a pleasant body buzz. Indicas are great for relaxation, stress relief, and for an overall sense of calm and serenity. Marijuana indicas are also very effective for overall body pain relief, and often used in the treatment of insomnia. They are the late - evening choice of many smokers as an all - night sleep aid. A few pure indica strains are very potent in THC, and will cause the "couchlock" effect, enabling the smoker to simply sit still and enjoy the experience of the smoke.

Hey all

Could we perhaps start up the discussion on this thread again? I'm experiencing similar-ish effects to those listed above. I had been a daily smoker for about a year and an occasional smoker for 4 years prior. I always enjoyed weed until I began to react negatively to the drug. I get generally achy when I smoke now. I'm curious to hear from anyone who has experienced this and has been able to cure these symptoms (either from long abstained use, or whatever). I took a 2 week break and smoked and was high enough to not really notice or think about the pain but I think that was primarilly because I was with friends and the socializing was a distraction. But yeah, any more insight on this most annoying phenomenon? Is the nurse correct in saying that it never goes away (that would suck...)? Thanks all.

Lets not make it more complicated than it has to be. Smoking pot regularly most often leads to an overall sedetary lifestyle. Meaning- sitting on your butt most of the time, with little but most likely no physical exercise involved. I think it's funny when a regular smoker who doesn't do much more than sit all day complains about, well, anything, but obviously some sort of pain, twitch, or other unpleasant feeling. After you are sure that you are getting at least 40 mins of vigorus exercise daily along with 8 cups of water, and a decent diet, THEN I would question your back pain.

Asside from all that obvious stuff, studdies have shown that smoking marijuana does increase the frequency of back and neck tumors.

I have the same thing. I didn't use to but now that I'm older I have a lot of pain due to auto immune disorders and no insurance. So I thought that would be a way for me to get some relief. But It started to intensify the pain not only all over my body but in my joints especially the ones that are already damaged. It becomes so painful that there is an uncontrollable urge or twitch to move to re leave it for a sec. Everyone around me said it was in my head they have never seen anything like it. And I know were the Marijuana I was smoking came from there was nothing laced in it. My husband has the complete opposite reaction and thought I was being funny. Has anyone found out why this happens.

Similar pain has happened to me. I never really liked getting wasted, so I've never been a smoker. But then, I ended up w/chronic back pain & high blood pressure. I wanted to cut back on high cost of pills (no insurance) so I tried medical MJ. At first, I was fine. It lowered my blood pressure & put me to sleep. I cut back on pills & since I couldn't take BP pills after bad reaction, I thought I'd found a great alternative. Even my cardiologist gave me his blessings. Until I began getting horrid sciatica (pain in left buttock & leg). At first I thought I'd eaten something (wheat, dairy & preservatives inflame my system). But it kept happening after I'd smoke or eat edibles so I figured it out. It's been a year since I've had any MJ. Few weeks ago, a friend had some really mild MJ (he has chrons disease) & I had a few puffs from one of those acrylic cigs & no pain. The MJ. was really mild . Put me to sleep beautifully. I checked my BP & it was normal again. He said it was sativa & I had only used indica so maybe that had been the problem. Question: anybody have pain w/sativa strain? Anybody have pain w/small tokes? I'm wondering if using it less & using small doses would make a difference? I don't know. Tried it twice but not again. Let me know your thoughts, please. Thanks.

Hey,

not sure why, but I left a post which was deleted. I was hoping we could restart this conversation for the purposes of further understanding these symptoms that we are experiencing from marijuana. But yeah, any more insight on this most annoying phenomenon? Is the nurse correct in saying that it never goes away (that would suck...)? And please, the last time I posted this I recieved a very arrogant response criticizing my choice to smoke weed. Instead of criticizing, let's have a mature and respectful discussion about this subject. Thanks all.
