I am 14 and 5'8 I am in year 9 and and i begun lifting weights 4 months and 11 days ago ( I started on the night of the new year) I do curls with a 10.6 kg bar while standing up in addition to dips and pushups, i am putting on nice muscle, however I have begun to realise that I am not growing height wise at my normal speed and the bone in my upper arm seems smaller than it should in addition to a infrequent ache in my upper right arm. I was freaked when I read this post but I do not want to lose the bulk that i have gained (I've found advantages such as being the strongest in my class, looking epic and being able to lift stuff others can't when asked which is just cool). I am aware that my growth could simply be slowing at its natural rate before a growth spurt and that the bone in my arm feels small just because of proportion but nevertheless...I feel conflicted as to what I should do but that my decision must be made very soon for if my suspicions are correct I have already lost some inches in height and I am afraid I may lose more.

im 13 years old and 6 feet and started weight lifting 3months ago and 3 months ago I was 5 foot 9 and I was skinny then and im 13 with 8% body fat now so I don't think weight lifting affects your growth if anything it makes you taller.

Yes lifting can stunt your growth, but under certain conditions... But even that is hard to determine since everyone is made up different, raised differently, etc... If I recall correctly, you have to put a great amount of stress on your growth plates to stunt growth. That's why you don't see a lot of 8-14 yr old doing high intensity training or one-rep max training.

Overwork in lifting WILL cause damage because of the maturing of the bone plates. You may not end up a runt, but you also might not have the joint protection when you get older. Imagine what arthritis feels like in older people -- you hate to get up out of your chair because your (back, hips, knees....) hurt when you do. Light weights will not harm for muscle toning. I knew a 14 yo girl who worked heavy on the weights, she looked good for 14 -16, but now hurts all the time. Do what you want, but only on a properly informed basis. Don't say later "I wish I'd listened." There's an old German saying: "Too soon oldt, too late smardt."

Personally, I wouldn't take any information from anyone here. Most people posting are between the ages of 11-16... Which means they couldn't possibly no rather or not weight lifting could stunt one's growth. I would speak to a doctor or someone with knowledge on this subject.

Its a myth. Weightlifting does NOT stunt growth. Many powerlifters like Arnold Schwarzenegger, david Robinson, shaquelle o Neal, and many more started lifting in their early teen ages and are over approximately 6,0 tall like Arnold for example. The only way you could potentially stunt your growth only if the bar falls right on your back and crushes a disk, cartilage or whatever. Don't listen to those people who say weightlifting stunts growth, They have no idea what their talking about and weights have nothing to do with height. Again weightlifting does not stunt growth PERIOD.

8 is wayyyy to young to start lifting period. Your bone have barely matured at that age. Plus at 8, he probably has no conception on proper form and technique. And that means a lot when weight lifting. But when you start to hit puberty at around 12-13. Than you can start lifting. Your bones are developed enough to take some stress. But take it gradually especially if your skinny with a low amounts of muscle. Start with light weight with high reps. And over time start to build up. And make sure to have proper form during your exercises and you should be fine. And try to avoid exercises that's putting lots of stress on your spine and legs such as heavy dead lift and heavy weight squats. Otherwise, the world is your playground!
Train hard!
