Hello,
My 12 year old son just had surgery for e. coli in his sinuses. He had polyps removed as well. He had originally tried 3 rounds of different antibiotics and steroids which had no effect. Apparently, his sinuses were so infected that they could not drain the c**p the antibiotics were battling. The body needs to be able to get rid of the infection somehow and his body couldn't. The week following surgery he was packed with dissolving gel and once that seemed to clear out, after about 3 days, he didn't seem too much better. At the follow-up, we discovered that the scabs from the wounds healing had to be removed (they were holding all the c**p inside) and the stuff in nasal cavity had to be suctioned out. They did that in the ENT office during a routine doctor visit. It was gross! I had to leave the room while they did it. But he is doing much better now. :) We have a final post treatment visit in another week. OH - due to this infection, he had large amounts of fluid built up in his ears and had to have tubes put in to drain them (they both operations at once). He had lost most of his hearing in his left ear and was beginning to lose his hearing in his right ear as well. He is hearing great now and we have a hearing test scheduled to make sure everything is great before school starts.
i was so sick , nausea, fever, rash stomach ache dry heaves, weight loss i had zero sinus symptoms I stopped working ...i was sick for over one year after seeing every 15 specialist even infectious disease and having every sort of test it was all negative. One day I felt my ear itching I felt dizzy slight shortness of breaths looked it up ...and you got it sinus infection I ran to the ENT to do a nasal smear and it tested positive for Ecoli The nightmare was almost over , the next nightmare was antibiotics I'm allergic to practically every single antibiotics . The third day of antibiotics my skin when crazy ... I ran to an ND who made the itching stop fast, then she called the compouding pharmacy to make up this nasal spray to kill the Ecoli two or three simple natural things mixed together that simply penetrates the sinus . It is worth mentioning here that my tooth was hurting it was my tooth where i had a root canal. So my dentist looked at the x-ray and he said no infection. However I had done my research so I already knew that that does not mean it is not infected . I guess all root canal leak infection into the body and can cause infection down to the bone which causes .sinus issues and serious illness . First I will find a dentist that does holistic dentistry that tooth will be extracted and I will have an implant put in. Thank God that I have good medical insurance because mystery illnesses and jumping through all the hoops is costly, stressful etc,...So there are ways that do not involve antibiotics, and my ND said that plant antimicrobials are stronger than chemical antibiotics plus they have little to no side effects,
can you tell me whatf inally happened to you? are you cured, if so, what was the magic drug? what were your symptoms?
I had sinus surgery on 1/14/2013, all of my sinuses were completely full and not draining and I have had 2 previous sinus surgeries back in the mid 90's. I have been suffering for about the last 3 years with symptoms such as fatigue, achy legs, irritable, besides the normal sinus issues sneezing, headaches, and drainage. It has been a awful time and I hope all you find relief.
I really think I am on the right path this time. I went to a new ENT about 2-3 months ago, 1st thing he did was a CT scan (previous family doctor and ENT did the same). I told him that I had a CT but the one he wanted had a protocol that mapped my sinuses that would guide the surgery instruments if it was needed. We scheduled the surgery and I am in the recovery process but this has been way different than the previous ones. No packing at all, I irrigate 8 or more times a day. This keeps the scar tissue down by washing all the junk out and keeping the sinuses moist (he stated the previous surgeries had left scar tissue, a hole in the wrong place for my sinus to drain, and a polop). The first few days was nasty and got better each day after, I went on my 1st post op visit earlier this week and the ENT stated that my sinuses looked good. Like a previous post, he scoped me with a camera and sucked some stuff the irrigation's did not get. During this visit, he told me they would call me about any bacteria/fungal infections from the lab and never had any of my previous ENT's performed any tests like this.
I just received a call stating that I had e-coli and they are calling in 21 days of antibiotics and I will talk with him on the next post op visit next week. Like I've stated, I have been suffering with sinus infections for many years. This surgery, recovery, and followup is awesome. Also, this ENT will refer me to an allergy specialist which is way different. Most ENT's have their own allergy department to test for and administer injections. This ENT told me that ENT's do not specialize enough to know about allergies, they did not spend enough time on the issue therefore he refers to an allergist that specializes in different allergies such as food, airborne, Etc.
This week for the first time in a long time, I feel great. Like - Oh, this is what life feels like type of feeling. Anyway, I could go through a long list of what I have tried and the treatments, I hope this is helpful.
My son had nasal blockage and headaches so bad he had to quit his job after 16 years with the State of Florida because the ENT could not cure his breathing problem. Looking for straws he made this decision because two fellow workers had recently died suddenly and the building they worked in has mold in the AC system. The AC was schedule to be replaced in 2011 but it slipped to 2012 and he is scared to go to work, so he left a good career for his health eliminating one possibility. His ENT wanted to do surgery for a deviated septum and plugged nasal passages. he agreed and the surgery went off well and he was dressed after the surgery awaiting clearance to leave when a nurse noticed something in his nose. (It was sutures) and called a hospital doctor on duty, if she should remove the stuff in his nose. He said yes.. Five days later he was release after the nurse about kill him pulling out the ENT's work and he was rushed into emergency surgery He also suffered seizures after the surgery and an ambulance took back to the hospital.. . He is back to square one.. Still has all of the original problems and today Feb 2012 his latest culture came back with E-coli. I am thinking from the ENT tools. He has lost 50 lbs and feels terrible. He has been on antibiotics since operation with little improvements and today starting new ones. The ENT want to go back in to repair hospitals damage. She says Afrin is causing his pains now and he stopped 6 days ago. I have taken Afrin for 15 years and use a CPAP machine at night and it is the only thing ( I have tried them all) that gives me any relief. I only us one spray a day before I go to bedand vicks rub
i have been seeing my ENT for 2 years had surguries an surguries he cultured my sinus an one time it showed ecoli an the other time MRSA thats what has been showing for a year so no medicines will work he is sending me to an infection disease dr on April the 29th good luck to you
What the heck is up with ENT doctors? I went to the ND clinic had 2 sinus smear showed up positive for ECOLI the three ENT doctors all said oh well everyone has something in their sinuses we would have to do a deep sinus smear to get accurate results there attitude was whatever...I quickly left the ENT and I'm working with a ND who is treating it ...but I was so blown away by the medical doctors total lack of concern and lack of treatment I had all the symptoms dizziness, shortness of breath , eyesight was light sensitive felt sick migraines etc.. thank GOD for Naturopathic medicine.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT HAPPENED....MY DOG HAS THE SAME THING AND WE HAVE TRIED 3 DIFF ANTIBIOTICS NOW.

i believe i have e coli growing in my sinuses from when my puppy started licking me in the nose 4 years ago. I have always had allergies, but I started developing a post nasal drip hack that progressively became worse until this past January when I started hacking up green jelly, although my nasal discharge was thick but clear. 2 rounds of Zithromax later, I still have it. The Zithromax knocked it back. but no real improvement
I recently spent a few days at my maternal grandmother's and had sneezed into my hands and she told me to wash my hands right away because she didn't want me to spread ecoli. I was confused and said I thought that ecoli just lived in the digestive tract of humans and animals and that it was only spread by not washing properly or contaminated water/meat. She said she's had ecoli before and when she asked her specialist how she got it he told her it's everywhere. She said there was a family she knew whose little girl got it while in a barn but she hadn't been put down in it. Apparently she looked it up online though and said there is a type of ecoli that lives in the nose and that sometimes good ecoli can turn into bad ecoli.
These stories sound Horrible. I found these posts while looking up Afrin and its possible connection to seizures. A friend of mine was on Afrin for 3 weeks with an untreated sinus infection. Just had a sezure out of no where. Went to ER and is on antibiotics. Now, I have only taken antibiotics as an adult at 46 yrs old 3 times in my life. I avoid it. Modern medicine you need to be careful. Everyday health is better medicine. So here is what I have found with my recent sinus infection attemptempting to take over my body. I have a NETI Pot. Yes it is Holistic. Which means that while you are fighting one painrelief your not keeping your pody from healing. That is what modern medicine dose. It discuises the illness. Yes, I use motrin, and medicine to make my self comfortble but I would try avoiding multi symptom medicine. Beware, buy the right stuff for yourself. If you buy multi symptom medicine, whell that is impossible for the body to fight. An example, multi symptom cold medicine. Either you have a runny nose or stuffy nose. So it is an antihistimine or decongestant. People prone to sinus infections DO NOT go trying to back that mucus in to your head with a antihistimine. It is very tricky stuff. So I get the ear aches and headaches and this week has been bad because of the weather. It is the presure that causes the back up.
PEROXIDE WITH WARM WATER tild your ear over a sink let it set or lay on the bed, then place a wash cloth over it when you get up. For sinus infections this is a must do at least once a month to prevent going to the hospital. Then use the NETI Pot they have them at local drug stores and places like whole foods. There is a solution for the neti pots. Use warm distilled water or boil it your self then cool it of then mix the solution with the water put it to your nose over the sink and let it run through one nostrile straight through the other. Now I got issues because of the deviated septum but it still works, my headaches have lifted, i felt better instantly. I did my ears. But today I will repeat the same procedure. Until I feel normal again. The weather is hot and stick with lots of lightening storms this week. I hope this brings some relief to some people it makes me sick that modern medicine makers are so backwards for the $. This was also on the DR. OZ Show and that is where I got the idea from. This way folks your medicine will not cause your body to be week and not fight off your infection because it is natural. One more thing. Clariton D. It is about $29 for a box of 20 I believe, and you have to ask for it at like rite aid or wal-greens, show your Dr. license it is a controled substance. But this works for headaches. I take the 12 hour when the weather presure starts to pick up again, and my sinuses begin to back up, I start. I have had a normal life with out headaches everyday, by taking this. I have never taken antibiotics for this. Antibiotics are only good if you have the right one but it will get worse and worse as you use them everytime. So it is better to do PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE. Take care of yourself if your prone to sinus infections. Keep your nasel passage clean with the neti pot, and keep those ears from backing up and causing ear aches and infections. Good Luck.
