Rach, thanks very much for this information. I had my new doctor take a look at my nails recently (they relasped and are again lifting from the nail beds on several fingers of both hands) and I was prescibedTerbinafine (Lamisil or equiv), 250 mg tablets, to take orally every day for 90 days and then we'll see if it starts to have any positive effects on what he thinks is a fungal infection of most of my nails...yeah he was not 100% certain as some haven't lifted or reverted back as much as others. At any rate, the way I see it I have nothing to lose.

Hi Rach, Thanks for your info. I have MS and am taking Avonex and I wonder if that's why this is happening to my nails as well. I also have dimples or pitting in them too. Multiple sclerosis is also an autoimmune disease. If you have any info on Avonex causing this, please let me know. Thanks, Stefanie :)

How reassuring to find others in the same boat with the nails separating from the nail beds.  I just realized this yesterday when i had my nails done.  i am very rough on my hands, cleaning house and gardening.  Also our dog has resistant staph infection which I constantly dip and am exposed to.  I am almost 60 run triathlons and marathons so I am healthy but I do have well managed HYPOTHYRODISM and on synthroid. I'll see a dermatologist but we are a medical family and don't really have a clue. I'll see what he says and keep u posted.

I can almost pinpoint the day my left pointer finger started hurting while i was shopping at cvs. Then shortly afterwards i noticed the nail lifting. Again, the last few days, my right pointer finger was hurting, but haven't seen any lifting yet..i am diabetic(meds), HBP, Raynauds, take lipitor also,

so as a quick follow up ~ most of us have a common thread here. Hypothyroid which is autoimmune or some other form of it One doc says it is acrylics (always easy to blame them) but another says hypothyroid, which has other symptoms. I had thyroid tests done, all is well. I just cut my nails as far back as I could and they seem to be growing back normally. anyone else find out anything? I wondered about stressful episodes?

Hello - I have had issues with my nails for well over 10 years. Seen multiple dermatologists and been tested for fungi multiple times, all come back negative. My nails and toenails have thickened and hardened/become brittle and lifted. I also have tons of ridges and my finger tips peel frequently. It is very painful, and whenever I barely knock something with my fingernails or toenails I want to cry because the pain is so excruciating. None of the dermatologists have been able to help me and it is so frustrating. It is ugly and painful. I also have celiac disease (autoimmune disorder) but have been stictly gluten free for several years now. Any idea what this might be? The dermatologist mentioned it could be nail psoriasis. I wish I could find a way to ease the pain and heal the nails, at this point I only have very few "normal" healthy nails. It continually gets worst. Any advice would be appreciated!!

Update: Finished the Lamisil approx a week ago and unfortunately I've experienced no improvement...actually my nails kinds got worse if I must say so. I plan to schedule a follow-up with the doc and if there's anything worth relaying I'll pass it on.

EEk - I would try to get in with a Rheumatologist or endocrinologist.

Did you also mention that you have raynauds?

I think since you have more than one nail lifting its more likely that you have something systemic going on. Whether it is autoimmune, thyroid (also could be autoimmune), or vascular - one of those two doctors can help.

The other thing worth mentioning is that sometimes the nail manifestation can be the worst part of an autoimmune process. There seems to be a spectrum of severity in symptoms when it comes to RA, Lupus, Psoriasis, etc... I think its smart to get all of the necessary bloodwork (Rheumatoid factor, ANA, anti-dsDNA antibody, blah blah blah). I went ahead and got all of that blood work and had a positive ANA - which isn't very specific, but its found in many autoimmune processes. I do not have abnormal thyroid markers tho - whew.

Anyone taken antibiotics recently? I have a patient (I am a home health care nurse) and while she is on some of the same medications (synthroid, premarin) she also has had a number of antibiotics. Wondering if this is a side effect?

For many years, I have had to be careful about using any polish on my nails. When I used it, the nails  would lift off from my nail beds. I also had weak nails and have dry skin. I thought I would never have nice nails. I am 67m years of age and this was a problem throughout my entire life.

I scoured the internet for something that would work and spent thousands of dollars on useless remedies and different types of nail polish. Finally I found something that works for me. I still can't wear polish but I do now have good nails that look nice. The product Is called Flexinail and it has been a godsend. I can now grow my nails so that I actually have to cut them myself. Before Flexinail, I couldn't grow them beyond the quick. I started out putting this oil on my nails twice a day and now do it at night only just before I go to sleep. My nail beds are healthy and my nails are nice looking  and even feminine. I will never be able to wear polish again but that's ok because my nails look nice without anything on them. No, I do not own or work for the company and have no financial interest in it. I just love the product. They are a Canadian company and the product may seem expensive but several times a year they have two for one sales and then I stock up.

Hello everyone,
Just a quick note to say that this started happening to me and I have also had dryness of the skin in the area of the nail. The problem may be the cold weather, I found that I had a hole in my glove while cycling to work and when I stopped cycling for a few days that nail got better. The cold will affect blood flow and thus oxygen supply so I suggest that you keep your fingures warm and see if that helps. Even wear gloves indoors for a while (plus moisturise) and see if it helps
