This will sound strange, but use Monistat (as in yeast infection) or a generic for the corners of your mouth. I suffered with that off and on for years and a Dr. finally told me to try that. It works every time for me. Hope that helps.

On the other 'hand', the tip of my thumb stays cracked and is so sore I can't stand for anything to touch it! I have NO idea what causes it.

Lips that split in the corner can be a fungal infection (likely a yeast, like thrush). Canesten (clotrimazole) or Micatin (miconazole) will usually clear it up quickly. If it's a recurrent thing, reducing sugar and starch intake can be helpful.

I've only had this problem for the past few months and it's VERY aggravating, as well as it makes doing everything so much harder, I've tried a lot of different things, from a real good moisturizer, to bear and coconut oils, and now I've started with Vitamin E oil..it seems to get better on a couple of fingers then it will go to another couple of fingers. I saw that you were going to a dermatologist and was just curious as to what they said, and the treatment. If you could, I'd appreciate hearing from you about this, thank you

I have had this problem in the winter since I moved from southern California to a colder climate 20 years ago.  I have found the most effective preventive measure is to wear nytrile gloves under my regular gloves.  This seems to help retain the moisture at the finger tips where cracks in the finger tips develop.  If a crack does develop I use super glue to close the cracked skin as others have mentioned here.

once when i was in my early 20's i cut my finger with scissors when i got distracted. the next day i had itchy tiny blisters around the wound. i got a tetanus shot when they didn't clear. i was fine until age 28....the same thing happened without a cut or scratch. then i had painful small splits as well on my palms AND fingers-often together! once in a great while i'm free of it but nothing i try works-various ointments, lotions, soaps, even hand sanitizers! almost 44 now & still afflicted, not remembering when i last had total relief! hard to do everyday things i used to not give much thought. no idea what i have-neither docs know for sure it seems

Hi, the split of the side of the lip is a vitamin B deficiency. Believe it or not eat vegemite! It's works! Good luck!

Hello, I have suffered from this for many years. My fingertips have been consistently cracked, hard as rock, splitting, and bleeding a lot. I've tried most things previously mentioned in this topic. I have eczema, but it is unrelated.

From my experience, it is tied largely to dietary issues and eccrine gland secretions. My diet is largely grain, wheat, meat, tomatoes and corn. There's no doubt I have been missing essential vitamins and nutrients.

Regular consumption of certain juices and fruits almost always restore hydration to my skin as a whole. When I wasn't on this diet, exercises that involve gripping, squeezing and lifting always restored the skin on my fingers. It often helped to lightly rub a pumice stone on them to reduce the excessive dead skin. My personal diagnosis is that the body lacks the nutrients necessary to hydrate the cells.

Also, I drink lots of coffee, the caffeine in which increases my blood pressure and gives me very sweaty palms. I don't know whether that affects my body's hydration or not, but going off it for a week every now and then certainly reduced my heart pressure and correlated with periods of restored hydration in my fingertips. I also ate more fruit during that time. It's hard to say.

I hope this post has helped.

I had the same problem as you with my fingers after trying every cream and ointment prescribed to me, i was finally referred to the dermatology department at my local hospital.they put me on tablets called toctino. These tablets were amazing, within 4 weeks my fingers were back to normal. They took me off toctino, within 2 weeks the sore peeling fingers were back. They say these tablets are very expensive. I managed to persuade them to put me back on them, and once again the sore peeling fingers have cleared up. So I'm staying on them for the time being. I hope i have been some help to you, and hope you get better soon.

I wonder if the cause could be a vitamin / mineral deficiency? I'm experimenting with a couple of hunches, but they are purely that: hunches. I'm experimenting with zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E -- or maybe it's some trace mineral. Any thoughts from anyone?

I was always told it's a vitamin D decency. Makes since, It's winter and we aren't spending as much time outside. Mine used to crack a lot when I was a kid. Good luck!
