My child recently had hand foot and mouth and is now loosing fingernails. However it is a virus and antibiotics do not work for it. Why on earth would they prescribe them? But I'm glad to know it's probably not serious.

My 4 year old daughter slammed her fingernail in her bedroom door. Our new dog was still having accidents and she didn't want her to have an accident in her room, so she shut the door quickly. It bled and we iced it for 10 minutes. An hour passed and it was good as new. It never bruised. Today she came home from preschool with her nail hanging on at the cuticle. It will probably fall off tomorrow, which is sad but I read that it will eventually grow back.

I came across this thread because I'm looking up online if there's anything topical I can put on her fingernail to encourage growth, and I came across this thread. I wanted to add to the possibilities of why a child's fingernail might fall off without the parent knowing why it happened, is that the child could have slammed her fingernail in a door. If you really don't remember an injury, my advice is to call the nurses line or go to the doctor. It's not worth an ER visit, but it's worth an extra visit even if it has to be on your credit card in case it's from some of the bigger issues besides injury on this thread.

Thank you so much, my son had the Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease a month ago I've notice his nails falling off from his fingernails and toenails. I was very worry about it although I had a feeling it was related to that. I'm still taking him to the doctors just to be sure. But your remark made me feel more at peace. Thank you it feels good to know other mothers are going through the same concerns as me.

Hi,

My son and nephew had strep throat, then broke out in a rash that their pediatrician couldn't explain, then my Son's toenails started doing the same. This has been several months ago that it started and they are still going through the process. His doctor was stumped as to what any of it. Yay me...NOT! Anyways, I've done a lot of research and seems that this typically follows after your child having the hand, foot and mouth disease/virus. And it passes. Hope this helps

Hi.. my daughter had a nail fall off and now a sore on her knee doctor has said its impetigo so I assumed that is normal.. anyone else who had impetigo losing nails??? :)

If your child recently had the coxsackie virus (also known as Hand Foot Mouth Disease or HFMD), this seems to be what happens about 6 weeks later. Check out the website listed below. My grandson had the virus and now his fingernails & toenails are lifting at the cuticle. Hope this helps.

My 1 year old son had impetigo and today his two big toe nails both seem to lift and fall off. There seems to me a very thin layer still there. This is the first comment I read about someone with impetigo having it happen.

If any of your children have had hand foot and mouth in the last 6 weeks or so, it is probably the cause. Very normal in hfm cases.

Hi! What did you discover about impitego and nails falling off? My son had it at the end of November (it's now February!) and he just lost his big toenail. His other one looks like it's cracked and going to do the same thing! Would love to know what you found out!!
