ct scan today. brand new machine. same thing. strange odor. strong 'bleachy' chemical smell...no dye contrast, but have had ct scan on sinus before and do not remember anything like this. my face felt warm and my cheeks were rosy like what too much sun might do.... i am curious if the newer machines are the issue

Yep I had 2 CT scans done on my head, I also had the weird smell. I thought it had been sprayed from the machine or something (i know weird) to test my olfactory senses for abnormalities in my brain while the scans were being done. Then I came home and googled funny smell and CAT/CT scan and realised that no it wasnt sprayed and yes its a real phenomenon if we must all be experiencing it. Wonder if any nuclear medicine technicians are going to research into it?

So I found this thread because I too, had a sense of some strange metallic smell during two ct scans on my sinuses. Heres the funny part: I cant smell to save my life. NOTHING for as long as I can remember. So go figure. How would I even know what a "metallic" smell is..

I just came from a CT scan and had the exact same symptoms, an over whelming odor that made me feel nasious almost. The best I could describe it was a strong garlic/almost foul smell. It was very alarming and the technician looked at me like I was crazy.

After more research I discovered what causes the smell. Patients may sometimes smell an odd smell during treatment that is caused by the ozone produced by the linear accelerator.

My doctors have me on so much pain medication daily, I did not feel dizzy when the smell came, or the burn sensation to my cheek bone. . . But I do want to say The chick performing the scan, ASKED ME," Have you ever had cancer? " That truly sucked, cause why would she even ask that, unless the machine was giving it to me???????? ha ha here another quiz test face book is giving me ha ha ha the word is DINNER ha ha ha

When I was 15 years old I was passenger in a car, We went under a huge truck bob- tailed type no load, I threw me through windshield&back in&engine came in with me&crushed the c**p out of my face, right hip, left foot crushed, spine totaled.... I have lived my entire life on the strongest pain pills each doctor from Houston, Texas to Arizona can&will give...It would piss me off if they give me cancer just trying to find out what is wrong with all this daily infection in my face, eyes&nose!!!!!

During my second sinus ct I definitely smelled "garbage", distinct, strong, just like the first time.

I know it's been awhile since you asked about this but I have started to investigate this phenomenon myself. I suffer from a long history of strokes and seizures and chronic migraines and have had too many CT's to count. Every single time I smell this smell. The only thing I can compare it to is like pumpkin except not pleasant, almost like a very exaggerated smell of pumpkin. I have asked numerous Techs and no one ever knows or has heard anything. Please contact me so I can add you to my report.

I have had complete anosmia for two weeks and was surprised when i had this pulse of acrid odor as i had my head ct scan. As such i would strongly suggest that this is a direct nerve stimulation phenomenon. Fascinating, as Mr. Spock would say. [Raised eyebrow]

I experienced a very toxic and foul smell during my catscan. I told the technician that the smell basically burnt my nose and gave my mouth a bad taste. She said another lady made the similar comment. By the time I got home all the symptoms stayed along with tightness in my
chest. I called the admin office and they said they would do an investigation. After two days, I started to get a fever and shortness of breath. I ended up in the hospital with low oxen and test showed a form of pneumonitis. Of course, admin decided to pay a visit to me at the hospital to inform me their catscan was fine. Has anybody else had after affects from the toxic odor?
