Thanks to the inovative HIDA scan, doctors found that my gallbladder was reacting at a 15% level. I have had constant sharp pain in my upper right abdomen and have had what seems to be 'attacks' of the gallbladder at night. The ultrasound was negative for gallstones and I was devistated not to have an answer for what I SURELY thought was a problem with the gallbladder. After the HIDA, the doctor said that it was positive and at 15%, surgery would be the recommendations. Unfortunately surgery won't be for another few weeks....I am READY to end this PAIN!!!!!
PS....just had my third child 8 months ago....think I had an attack while pregnant, but didn't know what it was.

I had this same problem. I'm 16. I was in severe pain around my stomach all the time, and especially after I ate. the bloodwork, ultrasound, and upper endoscopy found nothing but stomach ulcers, but I went ahead and had a HIDA scan and my ejection fracture was 3%. my doctor told me to have it removed because if i left it in, it could ONLY cause more problems and pain. I had it removed about 3 weeks ago. I feel a lot better now. the surgery wasn't a huge deal. the anesthesia made me vomit for the first 2 days after surgery, but otherwise i've had no other problems since surgery. I would suggest having it removed if you have a very low ejection fracture like I did. you should feel much better afterwards.
I am 23 and I had my son june '06. About six months later I started feeling really uncomfortable after some meals, nothing would calm the pain. Developed mild acid reflux and could control it by cutting out a few foods. Then in march I started waking up in the middle of the night and that bloated feeling would just get worse and worse. It slowly progressed and everytime it happened it would be worse- then early one morning woke up to horrible pains in stomach and chest area, felt like a spasm. It lasted a few hours the first time and every attack was more severe. One lasted for almost 8 hours and I was left feeling like I was hit by a truck, every muscle was sore to the touch. I finally found out how to stop them- If I took motrin and a small bite to eat along with a warm bath that would stop it from developing. That lasted almost two months and then it subsided. Summer comes and all of a sudden I have uncontrollable diarrhea. Lasted for 3 months straight- couldn't take a sip of water without running to the restroom. And for all of you who wonder if there is a connection between wieght gain and gallbladder problems- there must be. I didn't lose one pound that whole time I was so sick- I hardly ate anything and if I did it went right through me. I tried everything but then I started acidophilus and eating lots of starchy things and it slowed my stomach down a little. It seemed to get a little better in the fall and then I had severe problems after eating meals where I thought it was reflux- my chest would tighten. I got insurance and went to the doctor- low and behold all this time it has been my gallbladder. My hida scan showed gallbladder not working at all- 0%. I have a stone in my cystic duct or so they think. I am having my gallbladder out this tuesday before christmas. I am so ready to get it over and done with. I have a constant pain where my gallbladder is- it grosses me out to know that something is lodged in there. I am worried about what life will be like afterward- if I will have to run to the bathroom every two minutes I don't think I can live like that. Thank you to everyone on here for your stories, it has helped me alot. I hope everyone has a nice christmas!
:-(i am 33 years of age and about six months ago i started with a pain in my right side which over time as just got worse ive had xrays, ultrasounds, endoscopy and a hida scan. the hida scan has shown that my gallbladder is not contracting fully and i have a small pollip in it i go back to the consultant in three weeks and am hoping that he is going to take it out the last time i saw him they said they wouldn't because everything was just under border line what ever that means
I just had my gallbladder removed 2 days ago. I had right upper abdominal pain radiating up into my right shoulder. My ultrasound was normal, but my Hida scan showed an EF of 4%. I'm sore in my belly they say day 2 is the worse. The abdominal pain and shoulder pain is gone.
About a week ago, I was having severe pain in my upper abdomen. It lasted about 8-10 hours. I went to the doctor a couple of days after that. I had an ultrasound done of my gallbladder and no stones were found. I had a HIDA scan done and my ejection fraction was 0%. I have not had any more pain. Is this normal? Do you think the test was acurate? I am scheduled to go to the surgeon on June 3rd.
Had the upper GI, then the HIDA scan where you lay for an hour to watch the ejection occur out of the gall bladder. They calculate 22% ejection fraction and recommend removal. I am not really in pain, just bloating and feeling full. I think I am going to try some natural ways to cleanse the gall bladder first. I will post back with my results.
Wow - I am so happy I read all this. My pain started a week ago today. I woke up 3 nights in a row with UNBEARABLE chest pain and spent 3 nights in a row at the hospital fearing I was having a heart attack. I am only 24 years old. The first night, I was hooked up to an EKG and most of the focus was on my heart. When that came out clear, the PA on duty told me I had acid reflux, prescribed me Protonix and sent me home. I went back the next two nights with chest pain, back pain, dizziness, etc and they told me that something was wrogn in my GI tract (obviously). The forth night, I went to a different hospital and he brought up a Gallbladder Ultrasound. This showed no stones, but I went in for a HIDA Scan. Sure enough, my GB doesnt empty out properly. I have been out of work, frustrated, scared, and upset. I have an appointment for a consult with a surgeon tomorrow to discuss surgery. My questions are these:
1. How long did it take for you guys to get scheduled for a surgery after you were given a diagnosis? Eating bread, macaroni and only drinking water is taking quite the toll on me already. Haha
2. What foods were you able to eat in the meantime while waiting for your surgery to occur?
3. How long did it take to feel back to normal after surgery?
Any answers would help, I am so glad I found this board! Good luck everyone! :-P

Hi there. I didn't go through this but my dad did. Let me try to give you some insight.
1. I think that the whole turnaround time was one month. I don't know how long it would take you, but hopefully it will be a month.
2. I think he ate a pretty bland diet. I know that he had a lot of rice and beans, which was pretty safe. I don't think he went with much else than that.
3. He seemed to be totally recovered six weeks after. He had a lot of diarrhea and he still suffers from it on occasion.
Does that answer your questions? :)

So glad I found this site. At the beginning of the year (2009) I started to have vague abdominal pains. Long story short, in May, I had an acute attack of "something" abdominal which set off a series of tests. They found I have tiny side-branch pancreatic cysts which set me off on a big worry cycle. But all the docs say that my symptoms have nothing to do with the cysts. I have had every test known to man and they ruled out gallbladder because there were no stones. But in the meantime, I am having symptoms very much like those described in these posts. I have been diagnosed with mild gastritis and esophagitis. I have intermittent feelings of nausea and I will get acute attacks of pain just under my ribs which can be triggered by food but also activity such as golfing or running. My doc has just ordered the gall bladder ejection test on the chance that even though I don't have stones.
I ran a marathon at the end of November last year and am wondering if the stress of that (I am 63) might have affected my gall bladder and the way it is working.

Welcome to the forums! I'm sorry to hear about your health problems. I don't think that the marathon you ran had anything to do with gallbladder issues. It tends to not cause such an issue. Can you let me know how you're doing? Keep us updated, okay?
Hi everyone, and sorry to hear we are all either suffering or have suffered. I am in the same boat as many of you. For about 3 years I have had a couple of the really bad attacks some of you mentioned and ended up in ER. My liver function tests were insanely high and they found nothing on my scans (MRI, CT, US, XRAY) but I finally asked my Dr to do they CCK scan. I had it done on the 1st, saw the gastro today and am seeing the surgeon Monday. My gastro is convinced it is my gallbladder(due to the way the labs look) and says I should take it out. I trust him, and am taking his suggestion to have it out. It's not something you need, and if there is a chance taking it out will help, than I am all for it. Anything to feel better at this point. Good luck to those of you who are nearing surgery date, congrats to those of you feeling better, and my best to everyone!
Does anyone know why the gallbladder stops working?
I was diagnosed years ago with IBS and never had the pain in the upper abdomen, only lower left abdominal pain near my hip.
The pain I am getting is under the sternum right in the center and that pain is so severe it moves up into my throat and I feel as if Im choking. My back feels like a load of weights are on it. I find that going into a fetal position helps a little, but there is little I can do to make it subside.
Im afraid it could happen while I am driving!
The problem is the pain is so bad I wouldn't be able to go to the hospital and if I could the pain may have already gone.
So what do you do? I'm still wondering if it has to do with my aorta, which showed on the cat scan as an atherosclerotic calcified aorta.
All this after my gallbladder was removed which had a 3.5% ejection rate.

I am suffering with excessive belching (I am talking about all day long, except when I sleep), along with nausea and some abdominal pain. I'm having this symptom for over a year now and recently getting worse. I have run through series of testing (Upper GI, conlonoscopy, Utrasound, Hida scan, Liver biosy, blood test, ect... ) and everthing came back mornal except for hida scan injection rate for my gall bladder was 17%, which is in abnormal range. I went to the surgeon office to day to consult with him about removing my gall bladder and He decided to take it out on this Monday. I asked him if removing my gall bladder will take care of my problem and He said there is about 10% chance that woud not fix my problem, but Since I have done all the tests necessary, and the only option I have now is removing my gall bladder. I really hate to see part of my body is taken away, but I really worn out by the problem I currently have and hope it will fix my problem. I'll be back here to update my status after the surgery.
