Look into a cricopharyngeal spasm causing an increase in pressure in the esophagus which puts stress on the UES. May result in pharyngeal/esophageal diverticulitis (as happened in my case) or rupture of the esophagus. Been bouncing from doc to doc and neither the gi nor the ent could find the cause of my suffering. This thing has ruined my life. You can find the info in obscure medical references (which is probably why most docs aren't picking up on it). Don't expect them to do detective work when they spend most their day/night deaing with hmo paperwork.
The cricopharyngeal spasm can be prevented to some extent by slower eating, no cold fluids, good neck posture (see upper cross syndrome), no carbonated drinks, and no nuts of any kind. The pressure must be released via belching as the LES will not open to air alone. Belching will be more difficult as the high esophageal pressure has a similar effect on the UES (as it inhibits the normal involuntary belches), but it can be done. Bouncing on my toes, tapping my upper chest, and lying on my left side seems to work. Sometimes eating even helps get the gas moving. Treatment of any ensuing diverticulum involves endoscopic surgery and stapling.
I've spent the last year searching through discussions like this and only came up with hiatial hernia (not present on ct scan), and gerd (antacids do very little to help as the problem is happening way above the stomach - so at best they prevent complications). I've been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder as it is impossible to explain to a medical professional that anxiety is not the cause of the symptoms but the effect. Silver lining is that I am prescribed xanax which has been shown to help with the cricopharyngeal spasms. 20 minutes after the minimum dose and I'm belching like a cannon.
I'm very disappointed in modern medicine atm. I can't imagine how many anxiety sufferers that are having a lump sensation in their throat are being misdiagnosed and prescribed antacids and antidepressants for it. Given that this is seemingly common enough to have hundreds of forums devoted to it, I don't know how it's going under the radar. It's not even being studied. In a hundred years we'll look back on things like pill popping and hmos as equivalent to bloodletting and lobotomy. Modern is just a word.

I had the same problem. It started when I was about 5-6 weeks pregnant but no gurgling.
I'm 10 weeks post partum and the problem is still there but not as bad. I'm currently on antibiotics and proton inhibitors.
I've been dealing with something similar for over two years now. Went to have the H.Pylori test (negative), xray (nothing there), and random blood tests (all came back as normal/healthy). Doc gave me anti-depressants, which don't get me wrong were nice, but I know it wasn't the case. As someone said, this causes stress, not the other way around.
I've found when I eat a heavy meal at night, I get the tight feeling in my esophagus, just around where my neck and chest meet after an hour or so. It also happens in the morning when I wake up, whether I had a night of drinking or not. It makes it harder to breathe and only burping relieves that feeling of pressure. Since I've had this I changed my diet, sleeping, exercise, almost everything. Nothing made a huge difference until I quit smoking and went to ecigs. Before I used to get this every single day. Now at most it's once or twice a week. So I know the cigarettes were definitely exacerbating the problem, but it still happens and it's pissing me off. I can't point at one single thing. Cutting down on alcohol gave mixed results. I wish I knew what to take or do to get this to go away.
Sometimes drinking soda water helps as it induces belching. But apart from that, I'm lost to what this is.

I have exacly the same symptoms as you described. it really a weird feeling and its not easy to explain it. it can be connected with anxiety, it can be connected with emotions, it can be connected with allergy, it can be connected with acid reflux problem.
I am exactly like you. I feel this for the last 6 years.
I noticed if I lie on the bed on my belly and also drink small gulps of water the symptoms dissappear.
I think the solution is healthy food and drink and doing sport for the long term. Changing daily habits.

Hey don't know if you're still suffering from the same problem, I sure hope not. But I wanted to say that I think I know what my problem is. Might help you or someone down the line.
It's COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or Chronic bronchitis. My SO smokes and when we're at her place this usually happens after I have dinner and a drink. I'm breathing her second hand smoke and at times my breathing problem will happen immediately, and times when I wake up the morning after.

Good Lord, we all have it, no one knows what it is. I have it too. GERD is what everyone says. No one seems to be dying of if, but also not getting better. This sucks
try an anti inflammatory! could be costochondritis.
What you replied is exactly what I'm going through. Did you ever find a solution or a dr to provide a cause?
The best thing to do to get rid of that feeling is to vomit everything out. It cleans whatever you have inside. It feels much better no irritation.
Sounds like indigestion or acid reflux
I've been reading forums for years, as I've had this gurgling/mini burping sensation for over 5 years now, since I was a freshman in college. Mine are 24/7 though, no matter what I eat/drink, and even when I'm very hungry it happens. Your comment is the first one I've replied to because you are so right in everything you said! It's crazy to me that none of the doctors have heard of this, when clearly hundreds are suffering. I hope that sometime in the future doctors will start researching this, and hopefully one day we can all be cured. One can hope! For now, my life quality has dropped immensely in the past few years, and it only seems to be getting worse and my symptoms worsen.
From around September to January this year I've had hellacious episodes of what we're talking about. Almost every night at my SOs where I drink, vape or eat I'd get the suffocated feeling either before going to bed or when I wake up.
This was slightly different because only now did I actually start spitting this mucous/funny ball-like sputum out. It feels like it's stuck in my windpipe and it's causing me to have problems breathing in. Thought it might be allergies, took anti-histamines, nothing, no difference. Belching used to help, but now only when I spit this stuff out do I get some of my breathing back.
It's frustrating because I'm not sure whether this is a problem in my lungs or my stomach. I've stopped drinking tea altogether (switched to peppermint leaves to calm the cravings), I've added more probiotics (kefir, yogurt etc) to my diet. Since then I've hardly got any horrible episodes, although I do sometimes spit out a little of the small ball-like sputum in the morning. I'm still perplexed at what this is and where it's from.
