I as well have this problem. it has gotten so bad that i have to stop my meals half way through. I have spoken to my

doctor about it but all she says is to start eating foods with lower carbs. If i do that i fear i might disappear. i am only 76lbs.

Normal. Blood accumulates in the blood vessels surrounding the stomach. Hence, other parts of the body are weakened, including the brain leading to drowsiness.

Itotally agree with this reply. I never got tired before but if I eat anything except something raw I am so tired. I find that sometimes raw apple cider vinegar in water helps and also a liquid chromium that i am now searching for. I found it the other night on the net and didnt bookmark it and lost it. It was out of San Antonio Texas. It works so well!

I have the same problem It's like someone has given you something to make you ubber tired/ sleepy and even a nap will only hold me over a little while. I do notice that at night sometimes I will get this massive boost of energy but it's not to common that happens. My doctor has tested my thyroid several times and vitamin levels as well as treated me for depression. Nothing seems to work. Sometimes I can go weeks without this problem and then out of nowhere it is back again. It's to the point now that I would preffer to sleep over eat and it is making me loose wait very quickly. (should be a good thing but I think it is unhealthy to loose weight this fast) Good luck to you and hang in there.

I too suffer from post-meal shutdown. I would like to clarify for those reading this board...we are NOT talking about getting a bit dozey after we eat. We are talking about a drift to unconsciousness that is so rapid it creates vertigo, shifts the eyes out of focus so that even shaking the head is only a momentary fix before they shift again, falling asleep while sitting up and looking at the computer screen...these are all things that happen to me. Driving is difficult to say the least. In the dead of winter I have to have the window all the way down just so that the shock of cold will stop me from becoming incapacitated...and even that still leaves me having to shake my head constantly and take big deep breaths. It is literally like being slipped a drug. I have had the normal bit of sleepiness after a meal. This is not that. Have you ever sat looking at something on your computer and been so drunk with sleep that you literally can't stay on one line and focus long enough to read it? Can you imagine how this affects work projects?

This is NOT something that you can deal with by taking a walk after you eat. This is an urge that can only be answered by sleep. It might only be a 20minute nap, but there has to be sleep. Luckily I work at home so I can do that...but it constantly puts me behind on my work and is a real problem. Please understand...we are not saying we feel tired and would like a nap. We are saying that even though moments earlier we were wide awake and alert...once this hits it does not negotiate and it does not matter how rested we are. It does not matter if we slept 12 hours the night before. We simply must shut down and give in to it. If we manage to fight past the sleepiness because we are at work or something, the rest of the day is spent as if we were on our 3rd day of no sleep. Headache, burning eyes, poor concentration. It utterly sucks and to say that it is normal is to ignore what we are describing.

So, having said all that....does anyone have any suggestions that might address something so severe? Not, oh you ate too many carbs. It does not matter. I could eat a piece of half raw steak and the same thing happens. I do think that the adrenal issue might be worth exploring. Like some others on this board I suffer from constantly feeling cold and have low blood pressure, but I have been told I have no thyroid issues. I do not think that this is simple hypoglycemia. I don't exhibit the general symptoms of that.

I really hope someone can explain this one day.

It is normal to feel sleepy after eating. Unless you have some other health issue ****. I suggest seeing a doctor anyway. No one on here is qualified or can provide the credentials to pretend they're qualified to help you.

Stop being a douche and go see a doctor

Thank you! I've been reading here trying to find some sort of logical answer to my extreme (nearly "sedated feeling" of tiredness) EVERY time I eat. I do have Fibromyalgia, hypoglycemia and Chronic Fatigue but this is freaking RIDICULOUS and NOTHING like I have experienced in the past three decades of my life. I wish someone would give an answer that makes some sort of sense...a doctor maybe? My doctor seems clueless.

Yes, I understand, but it has been said that it is not good to lie down when after completed eating. So why is the 'rest' necessary after heavy meals.

Thyroid tests plus a complete list of symptoms plus a doctor who knows how to read all that will add up to an accurate diagnosis. My eighth doctor was the one who discovered my thyroid problem. Chris Kresser in California, Mary Wise in New York State... there are others. I recommend the former for diagnosis and treatment but the latter is an MD and can prescribe thyroid hormone if it's needed.

Interesting--I've been researching this myself because when I eat starchy foods I go out like a light within 20 minutes. It's better than a sleeping pill but I don't think it's normal. I'm due for a fasting blood test but that wouldn't tell me anything. What I need to see is what happens to my blood sugar level AFTER eating a lot of starch. Thanks for the info, I'll mention it to my doctor
