I think it happens to a lot of people. I know it definitely happens to me after every meal unless I eat a pretty light lunch. Maybe stick to vegetables during the day?

but i thought the blood that being supplied to the brain is remain constant in certain range... if that is the case, thus the brain will still get enough blood to stay in conscious level though after having a meal. please correct me. %-)

slow down. why is it so hard to fathom resting for 30 minutes to let your food digest? the amount work it takes for digestion to occur
is way bigger than we account via our outside the body perception. there's a furnace burning down there. sit back a sec and let it work
then resume your regular activity. siesta, rest, etc. its the bodies natural response after a meal. if you eat c**p, you'll feel like c**p. if you eat good food and get a little tired, give it a minute and let your body do its work. you'll find that you have a tremendous amount of energy as your body begins to absorb the nutrients from the foOD IT JUST DIGESTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the guy who says we're weak and lazy is an as****e jacked up on his 3rd dose of caffiene right after lunch! i'm 36, don't even workout and have a perfect physic am never tired and i don't even touch caffeine. i listen to my body and good common sense! food combination is key. if you want to know more about that, send me an email to and i'll tell you about food order and it just might change your life.

No, there is anything wrong with you, this is totally normal that you feel sleepy after eating. This happens to everyone, have you talked about it with someone else? If you ask someone, they will tell you they also feel like sleeping after their meals. This happens because when you eat all the blood float right to your stomach in order to digest the food you have eaten, thus you have no will and mood for anything else, you just feel lazy and doing nothing. This is why it is healthy to have a rest after heavy meals so that your stomach can do its job properly. You just don’t worry about your sleepiness, it lasts only until you have digested the food you have eaten.

In re: Sandy - Why You Feel Sleepy After Eating - Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Quote:

If you feel sleepy after eating, particularly after sweet or bakery products, you are normal. Eating sugary foods causes your brain to make large amounts of the neurotransmitter, serotonin, that makes people fall asleep naturally at night.

Eating sugary foods or those made from flour, such as bakery products or pastas, causes blood sugar to rise higher than normal. This causes your pancreas to release large amounts of insulin, which drives one of the protein building blocks called tryptophan from your bloodstream into your brain, where it is converted to serotonin that makes you feel sleepy.

Many people can avoid feeling sleepy after eating by restricting foods that are high in sugar and flour. When it is important for you to be alert, eat foods that do not cause a high rise in blood sugar, such as vegetable salads, nuts, seeds, meat, fish or chicken.

I woke up this morning several hours ago and just can't function because I am in this sleepy fog. And this has been going on for hours now. And this has happened before. Some days I just can't seem to get out of this sleepy fog all day. And I totally hate being this way. I have things to do and don't have time for this.

But right now my vision is really blurry and I am having a really difficult time typing - which is very unusual for me. Thank God for spell check. But it is taking me forever to type this and usually I type at better than 70 wmp.

And I feel like I am thinking through a paper bag. Heck I couldn't even figure out how to work my microwave.

The other morning when I woke up and my glucose level was down to 65. Which is pretty low from my understanding. I did take it today, after I was able to find my glucose meter which turned out to be right in front of me, but my level is 110. So that is probably not the problem.

Sometimes this happens when it is cloudy, but that is not the case this morning. And I have read the if you are dehydrated this could cause sleepiness. So I am drinking liquids

My best guess is that I had too many carbs throughout the day yesterday. So I am going to eat a high protein breakfast and see if that helps.

And taking a nap when I was like this only makes it worse - at least from my experience.

All I really know right now is that I just plain cannot function right now.

So, does anyone have any suggestion?

Hi Can't Wake Up,
Have you considered that this could be something connected with your blood pressure? My friend had once similar problem, when he had high blood pressure.
Have you ever tested your blood pressure?

There are a group of neurons in the brain called orexin neurons which regulate wakefulness. These neurons are inhibited (they fire less often) in the presence of glucose which is the reason that we all feel sleepy after a meal. If you are interested, the paper regarding this was published in the June 2006 issue of Neuron by Denis Burdakov.

this happens to me, but if i eat a little bit more, the sleepiness goes away. i think that eating something else brings my blood sugar back up. maybe this is the reason that people tend to eat desserts or at least eat in courses.

i have found that eating grapefruit before each meal ensures that i don't get sleepy with blurry vision. i've read that the juice works almost as well. apparently there are substances in grapefruit that stabilize insulin and blood sugar. it's also good for weight loss.

i've also had some success following the dietary guidelines of the weston a. price foundation & dr. mercola.

I've battled this problem for years now, along with other, related health issues.

When eat a meal without carbohydrates, I don't get sleepy.

From my current understanding, this is because I have yeast overgrowth. When glucose hits the bloodstream the yeast go to work.

Yeast + Sugar = alchol + carbondioxide + (other toxins) = sleepy

It's that simple.

Sleepy after eating? - Please look for MSG in your diet..
Could be many things but MSG content is in so many foods (even those healthy little yogurt cups)!
this explains better than I

No one has mentioned the issue of candida here. I have struggled for years with fatigue and sleepiness after meals as well as gas, constipation/diarrhea, sore joints, I could go on. One of the most debilitating symptoms is the sleepiness after eating carbs or sugars and brain fog. As soon as I went on the candida diet things began to improve. The only problem... candida is very difficult to resolve. It takes a lot of work and you can't let up. Any sugar or carbohydrate, even corn or peas can sustain it and it will continue. I have only found one product that gives relief. When candida is addressed it is wonderful to feel normal and functional again.

Sorry, I missed the reference to yeast... that is exactly the issue here.

I often feel sick after eating, as well as feeling extremely drained and tired. I also get really light-headed and an ice cold sensation goes across my chest. I have to lie down immediately when I feel these symptoms coming on. Then I usually break out in a cold sweat. After a half hour or so I begin to feel okay again. I am on Parkinson's meds, but the odd thing is I only get these symptoms occasionally. I am more prone to get them if I am rushing about or a bit stressed.
