I have the same problem. If I eat a banana raw on an empty stomach, I get sharp stomach cramps and feel really sick. I have to lay down for about 20 mins. I absolutely love bananas so it's a real bummer! If I eat them cut up in a bowl of porridge or mixed with custard, I'm absolutely fine. I was fine before I had kids, but since having them I seem to be sensitive to bananas. It's weird. I have a feeling it has something to do with the potassium in them. Apparently potassium causes the same side effects.

I ate bananas all the time growing up but something changed from about the age of 21 on that caused me tremendous suffering after eating a raw banana. I too have been searching for years for an answer (I'm now 54). Some theories discuss the high serotonin levels while others point to a particular amino acid, and others talk about pesticides. Lately I've been seeing more discussion around this being caused by the banana not being ripe enough (but who wants to eat a mushy brown banana?) I bought some bananas for the family at Thanksgiving and after everyone had gone home, I started to toss the remaining 2, but decided to put the latest theory to the test after years of living banana free. I ate half. It was browner and mushier than I like but did not cause the banana pain. LIke others have said, this is one of the most horrible pains I've experienced and is similar to what you describe. For me, it causes the usual bloating and gas that accompanying food intolerance but also an intense pain just below my sternum at the top of my stomach. I've described it to my hubs in the past as a boring (as in it just bores so deeply into my gut), burning type pain that last from a couple of hours to the whole night. All I can do is drink pepto (to try and ease the pain) and lay down on my stomach until it subsides. When it finally does, I am left feeling exhausted and like I've been beaten up. I have no known food allergies, no allergies to latex and do not suffer from ulcers or acid reflux. I do think avocado triggers a similar reaction in me but since I don't like them I only suspect this because I accidently got some guacamole on my chips one time and had that same pain. I have sometimes experience a less intense version of this with walnuts, but not always. There is something these items have in common based on pervious research but I cannot remember now (maybe the serotonin?) Someday maybe we will know the answer.

Hi, I lived 8 or 9 years with this problem, and now IT IS GONE! I might have guessed what caused it in my case so I thought I should share, could it be helpfull for someone.
It was during summer when I was 17 or 18 that my banana pains started. When I figured out I decided to not eat them anymore as the pain was awful. Sometimes I got tempted, but if I gave in I regretted shortly after almost every time.
Early this year I stumbled upon interesting site about health, vitarianism an such. I envied people which eat heaps of bananas every day an decided to try organic ones. Without result. At first. But then suddenly aches stopped. Since 6 months or so no pain at all. And I'm eating regular ones not organic. Possible cause? I remembered, that around time that pains ceased I also stopped drinking soy milk (after reading how author of forementioned blog yells /unfermented/ soya is no food). I was eating oatmeal with soy milk almost daily since high school...

(I'm not native, sorry if I wrote sth weird)

This has happened to me twice in 10years because the first time it was so bad I was not gonna eat the banana again....but today I did and the same thing. I finally ate a piece of pound cake and some crackers and it went away for the most part....go figure. It drives me nuts because I am a nurse and I want to know lol

It is probably a latex allergy. Sounds crazy, but look it up!

Please don't give bad advice. Bananas should not be eaten by those who are intolerant.

So, I came to this page and others searching for why eating bananas cause cramps and how to alleviate it..
Ate a chocolate bar with a glass of milk and this seems to take most of the discomfort away.. Not all but enough to not want to be doubled over. Hope this helps.

I suspected something was wrong with me the last few times I ate a banana as it caused EXTREME pain and discomfort under my ribs in the middle of my chest. I'm at work so I'm just suffering until the pain subsides. This time is has taken nearly 3 hours. I just read that if you are allergic to ragweed or have hay fever, bananas can affect you negatively because the proteins in bananas are similar to the proteins in ragweed. It's called pollen-food allergy. I have multiple food allergies already, but bananas didn't begin giving me problems until a while back. I just avoid them usually, but this morning I wanted banana sliced with my blueberries for breakfast. Trying to eat better and look where it gets me! Donuts never caused me such issues!

I'm suffering right now because I had a banana about an hour ago. That happens to me every time I eat bananas, but this time I decided to make banana juice but the pain is the same
