How does non treated skin melanoma end?

If a person has a melanoma mole on the skin and doesn't know about it or ignores it, so the person receives no medical treatment for the melanoma at all, how does this normally end? I am sure I heard somewhere that melanoma can be fatal, but is that always the case? I would be really grateful for some info.
