What can you tell me about living with just one kidney? How long can you survive? I mean, it looks like my left kidney will have to be removed and I would like to know what will happen afterwards. Doctor said that I should be just fine, but how can I when my kidney will be extracted?

My sister in law is 84 and has been living with one kidney since her early 20's.  She has not had any problem, no changes in life style.  The only restriction was not to drink alcohol.     I had my right kidney removed 3 months ago and am still a little sore.   I had it removed by robotics and never experienced any sharp pain after surgery except when I coughed.  I went home in 3 days and didn't need any help at home.  I was restricting from lifting anything over 10lbs for 6 weeks, but I could drive after a week.  I was not given any diets and have no restrictions at all.  Of course I am not going out for sports since I am 76 years old.  LOL
you will be just fine i am 32 and i have one kidney infact i born with one kidney and so far am doing just fine
Hi, I had my right kidney removed at 27 I am now 64. I lived a normal life until Aug 2011 when I was told I had 2 tumours on my remaining left kidney & they were going to have to remove it & I would be on dialysis well I wasn't happy with that so I asked for a second opinion & they referred me to another specialist that said he would try to remove the tumours (one on top of the kidney was 7cm & the one on the bottom of it was 5cm) he did so and I am now living with one third of one kidney which your body can do. This was done Jan 2012 and I am fine living a normal life with a GFR60 which they say is amazing. I hope loads of people read this and learn. My doctors have learned a lot from my case & hopefully I have saved someone from going onto dialysis when it wasn't the only option. My surgery was done at The Freeman clinic,Newcastle, by Mr,Soomro. This is in Uk by the way. I hope this is a positive reply to your worries & anyone else with kidney problems.

With reference to the above I am a littler scared that my consultant said my best option was to have my kidney removed. In short, I had  extreme pain on my right side a couple of times and my GP organised an ultrasound scan. This showed 6 cysts and scarring. I was then referred to an urologist who organised a CT scan and a Mag 3 scan. The CT scan showed a blockage and the Mag 3 showed my left kidney was doing all the work. The right kidney was enlarged due to the urine not being passed. He said as the kidney wasn't functioning it was better removed. Should I have a second opinion?
Hi, if it is not working I would say yes. The good one you have left would allow you to have a normal llife. I think we should always have a second opinion.
i dont care.
