What can you tell me about living with just one kidney? How long can you survive? I mean, it looks like my left kidney will have to be removed and I would like to know what will happen afterwards. Doctor said that I should be just fine, but how can I when my kidney will be extracted?

My husband had a tumor on his left kidney in 1996 and had no chemo or radiation and has lived perfectly normal since then. He has had no medications at all. No diet restrictions. Please realize that everyone is different but for the most part our experience has been great! No complications at all.
I think having two may inhibit your grammar ;D

Ok just to assure you. I had my right kidney removed when I was 18 months old. I am now turning 60 in May next year. So I would say I have had one kidney for 58 years and it is still going strong. I played sport, I smoke and drink alcohol . Have done so all my life. I'm not saying you must do that but I did and I'm still good.

I'm 35 yrs old and recently found out through MRI, CT, and ultrasound that I was born with only one kidney (missing the left). It's been only recently I've been experiencing UTI/Kidney Infection but all in all my whole life prior to has been a healthy happy one. Look at the bright side, at least you will have prior knowledge that you will have only one after the surgery and can prepare your body to keep that one kidney healthy. Some, like us, who never knew they were born with only one going through all the many different stages of life and lifestyles manage to still be healthy =)
