What can you tell me about living with just one kidney? How long can you survive? I mean, it looks like my left kidney will have to be removed and I would like to know what will happen afterwards. Doctor said that I should be just fine, but how can I when my kidney will be extracted?

I too was only born with one kidney and didn't find out until I got pregnant at age 30 by my ob/gyn. Some women who have kidney issues also have reproductive issues. since I have the one kidney, I have a double uterus. I can only get pregnant on my right side and the baby grows only on the right side. Since my uterus is only half the size of a normal uterus, the baby had no room to turn head first when I was in my final month. i had both of my kids by C-section due to this anomaly.
So, I've lived my whole life so far (I am 50) without changing anything about my diet or way of life with just one kidney. I do joke with my kids that if I'm injured, tell the doctors not to remove my one and only kidney!

Hi. I have been living with only one kidney since I was 3. I had become quite sick and almost died when it was discovered that i didnt actually have a right kidney but a sac filled with poisnous fluids. They removed that and for the most part I lived a great life with only my left kidney. I am now 47 and unfortunately have been told that I am to also lose the left kidney due to PKD (polysystic kidney disease). Wishing you lots of luck!

I am a 46 year old woman and i was born with one kidney, as a child i eat pretty much any thing i wanted to. I found out I was born with one when I was a sophomore in high school but only because I got sick over something else and all kinds of test were done. I just watch what I eat for weight reasons and if I drink sugary drinks or alcohol beverages I make sure I have a water as well. You will be fine :)
I am a 65 year old male, with no other health issues except I had to have my left kidney removed in 2011 due to sepsis. I now have high blood pressure which is under control with medication, but my GFR was only 50, which is listed as stge 3 CKD. I now go for blood test about every 3 months to monitor my kidney function. I tire quickly and have very little energy. I have no other health issues besides psoriasis. I only wish I had more energy.
I had an issue with my bladder, because of which I had to undergo a surgery to fix it. Once it was fixed at the age of 6, things did go wrong. My kidney was somehow affected and when I turned 26 I had slight pain in back and I did find traces of blood in the urine. After the consultation, I was informed that my left kidney had stopped growing and it was just 8% functional, because of which I had to undergo a surgery and get it removed. I used to have High BP back in my school days. Now that I have my kidney removed, I am regularly having issues with BP. I have to continue with my BP tablets, if the dosage is high, I would faint or will remain tired the entire day and if the dosage is low, when undergoing stress I tend to have nasal bleeding. Stress level has just went down. I get easily pissed off these days due to BP and I am easily troubled than before. Physically I dont have other evident issues. I just feel a little held up as there are dietary restrictions. Have to drink plenty of water. Have to avoid regular use of alcohol and cigarettes which is good to be kept away even if you are leading a normal life. One has to reduce the intake of protein. If thats not taken care of, there is a chance to hurt your functional kidney and damage it. Reduce tension and also eat healthy. You will be able to live a happy life.
There is no such problem that you are going to face with a single kidney. Many of us live normal live with one kidney. People Who Donate a Kidney Live Just as Long as Those Who Don't. People with one kidney avoid sports that involve higher risks of heavy contact or collision. This includes, but is not limited to, boxing, field hockey, football, ice hockey, Lacrosse, martial arts, rodeo, soccer and wrestling. This may also include extreme activities such as skydiving. Anyone with a single kidney who decides to participate in these sports should be extra careful and wear protective padding. He or she should understand that the consequences of losing a single kidney are very serious.
I'm 59 years young! The important thing to remember,is not to stay in a stupid mode!? Occasionally over doing it on drinking (alcohol). It over works your kidney, but always drink water, teas, and more water. Especially when running, swimming, or just plain, working hard. Use common sense!!! Everybody is different!! I was born with one kidney, Doc always talk to me when I was young that, drinking water is the most important drink, you could have for your body.. So take care grasshopper. Your friend Anthony
