What can you tell me about living with just one kidney? How long can you survive? I mean, it looks like my left kidney will have to be removed and I would like to know what will happen afterwards. Doctor said that I should be just fine, but how can I when my kidney will be extracted?

This is Zubi...my boy frnd met with an accident last year and his kidney and some his body parts were smashed. and he is left out with one kidney. He is trying to avoid me beacuse he does not want to spoil my life by marrying me. But I am dying inside. I am ready to donate my kidney to him. But all my question is how long a person can live with one kidney?? and can someone helps me to give the possible ways to make my boy friend happy??
i was born with one kidney & i'm 58 years old. i found out in 2009 when i had a ct scan to diagnose appendicitis. the doc said, looks like your appendix has to come out, and, by the way, did you know you only have one kidney . . . . baring any other pressing health issues, you'll probably be fine .
My name is Lenard Gordon and I am 57 years old. Im from south Africa and I had a tumor in my right kidney as a baby. I had the kidney removed when I was 18 months old. The op was done at the Red Cross Childrens Hospital in Cape Town although the records maybe at Groote Schuur hospital, Cape Town. I therefore have lived for 55+ years with one kidney. I have lived a normal life but found in later years I suffer with gout. This is no reflection on me having one kidney because I have mistreated my body. I drink and smoke and hate water. This is not to encourage anyone to follow my doing , but to advise everyone that one kidney is no handicap. My main problem is that I smoke too much and I think my lungs will go before my kidney.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use

1 out of 750 people are born with only one kidney and there lives are no different from yours. Nothing changes. You just can't play contact sports. Also you might get a high blood pressure

Just found out I have one kidney threw a ct scan am 44 and am worried sick
its perfectly natural to be able to like a long normal life with only one kidney, you just need to be a bit more careful with diet that's all beside your 44 now and only just found out but been leading a normal life so why you freaking not now.
Just a note to all you wonderful people! When I was 2 days old, I had my left kidney removed due to a benin growth around it. I am now 60 years old and in good health except for the normal aging process!!lol. Good advice here from so many people. Drink a bunch of water and monitor your blood pressure. Keep it down and you should be great! Many Blessing!!
My mother lost one kidney at age 15 (back in 1944 due to benin cysts) and she lived to give birth to two healthy daughters and survived to age 72 dying from lung cancer - not kidney problems (from her 50 year habit with cigarettes).
I had a right nephrectomy (due to hydronephrosis) when I was 5 years old. I'm now 60 years old and still going strong.
