Hi, I'm 30 years old and my wife and I have already two wonderful kids. We have thought about some form of sterilization. The choice has come down to me to do a vasectomy because we thought it would be the best and the safest solution for the both of us. Contraceptive pills and my wife’s sterilization were excluded because there are too many side effects and complications involved. Could anyone please tell me how long would the recovery take and what are the possible complications that can occur?
Nowdays vasectomy is a very safe sterilization procedure that leaves little long term consequences for the one who decides to do it. In most cases and in most modern hospitals it is done endoscopically with small incisions on the scrotum and a very short period of recovery. It is commonly thought that you should be able to return to your daily routines within a week from the surgery, although you are likely to feel a small amount of pain originating from the surgery. Any pain or discomfort usually disappears within the first month and if the pain is too much to bare then it is treated with medications. Sores and blood blisters should be away within the first few weeks. You must have in mind that after vasectomy you are not totally sterile since there sperm can still be ound in the ejaculate. You have to do regular sperm tests so that the doctor can confirm that you are sterile. Only after the doctors confirmation of sterility you are free to have sex without protection. Complications are rare and may include bleeding, abdominal and testicular pain and discomfort, bleeding etc. It is possible that vasectomy fails so that you impregnate your wife despite the fact that you had a vasectomy. That happens if vas deferens reattaches itself and forms a pathway for the sperms. The most serious complication of vasectomy is a possible prostate cancer at older age. For any other concerns that you may have turn to your physician.
If you get a good urologist, its really not that bad. Local hurt a couple seconds, didn't feel any pain on my left side, just some strange feelings. On my right side, I could feel all the cutting, but it didn't hurt that bad.
I did take vicadin before, and twice after. I iced it 24hrs a day except when I slept for 24+ hours. I rested that night and the next day, but was back to work two days later. I went to the gym and did 1/2 hour of weights and 1/2 hr of walking by saturday (had it done wednesday morning).
Its saturday night, and I have brusing, and soreness, but nothing I can't work through. My back hurts worse than this!

It hurt like hell, make the women stay on the pill,my testicles are the size of watermelons,i might need to call a doctor
Yes, if your "testicles are the size of watermelons" you should be rushed to the emergency room as soon as possible. Seriously, I hope that is an exaggeration and if not, I pray you get medical attention immediately. I have heard it doesn't hurt that bad and there are a couple of days of rest that are required but overall things heal quite quickly and with little discomfort. Check with your doctor and go through all avenues before committing to one descision in this area.
I am 4 days post-op and can give a little info on progress.
1st, did not feel injections at all. The first side did not get quite enough anesthesia and I felt everything!!! Second side was a piece of cake. Experienced some lower abdominal pain later that day but not bad. The 1st day after surgery it looked like a large, black avacado. Very swollen and bruised but no real discomfort. My wife is a Nurse Practitioner and she could not believe the sight of it. I did not stay off my feet as much as I should have but all was going well. A little ice hear and there on the lower abdomin helped. Same for 2nd day. The 3rd day after surgery I went back to work. As the swelling began go go away, the pain began to move further south from my abdomin to the surgical site. I am now on my 4th day after surgery and experiencing the most discomfort and pain so far. Swelling gone, black bruising now purple and finally ready to use the Lortab prescribed. Until today, very little discomfort but now we are into pain! A friend has his done an hour before me and he had to leave work today because he was hurting so badly. Not trying to scare anyone away from having the procedure as the procedure itself was okay. Recovery is not as pleasant as I expected though.
TIPS-
1. Stay off your feet for 2-3 days (I messed up on this one)
2. For the first 2 days apply ice (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
3. Milk it for all you can!

I had mine done a week ago the worst part was the injection other than that absolutely no pain. Have a small single incision right in the center. day after was back to work had sex 2 days later and every other day or so since. There is a small ache in each testicle similar to blue b***s I highly recommend the procedure it is so much safer than putting your loved one at risk with a tubal litigation or such.
Well - i had the op done on Friday afternoon (now Monday) - i had the general anaesthetic cos bit of a history with dizzy spells after locals. Operation happened at 3.00 and i was out for the count. I came around at 4.30 and was back on the road home again by 5.30.
Mild feeling of discomfort at the minute - feels like i got a whack on the gonads a few days ago - but nothing unbearable.
Was slight oozing of the 'wound' but again, only what you would expect and this had all dried up by this morning.
Take it easy, have plenty of hot baths and milk lots of sympathy from your partner - after all this will benefit her as much as it will you.

after about ten days you will feel almost normal with some bruising remaining and some noticeable discomfort however rest and jockstrap will help very much, when your arm is broken you put it in a sling right so do the same with your stuff after this operation. First few days out of surgery are tough with swelling and bruising but stick with the ice and rest, move slowly and pain will leave
Well, I'm 10 days post surger. I felt no paid during the surgery and took it easy for three days after that. Buy I'm pretty active and started right back into my normal routines and two days later I was in quite a bit of pain on the left side (of my sack). I put the support back on and it worked wonders. I can barely feel anything now (except for my wife's continual rejection) LOL.
Ice it down and wear a support and all should be easy.

I experienced a dull ache for nearly 4 months to a varying degree. It is like a groin strain running from my crotch into my abdomen. This, coupled with an inability to enjoy sex for 2 months came as a BIG surprise to me. This is not as trivial as the medics or your wife would have you believe.
about a day or two
I am 23 and just had this surgery done due too the fact that my wife has some severe issues with birth control. So we decided because neither of us wanted children that this was the best solution. So I had the surgery done on a Thursday and it is now Wednesday the following week. Here's a look into my shoes. The surgery was actually OK, the doc. numbed it up really well snip snip and it was all over besides a few odd pulls and a few weird feelings it was not that bad, put your jock strap on and comfy pants and away I went on just some extra strength Tylenol. I get home that night (the doc was 2 hours from home) and ice it down for the whole evening. I take off friday and Ice the whole day and just lounge on the couch. I did start to move around on Saturday a bit more did the dishes and etc. No really horrid pain really just a few sharp pains here and there. Now as of today Wednesday, the swelling went down the bruising is just a light purple and the cut healed up good, but oh god my right testicle hurts really bad like someone is squeezing it. But lets hope this goes away. Other than the pain sex is fine (using a condom) just take it easy and slow.
I am a 43 year old male who just had a vasectomy about a month ago. I must admit that after reading several posts and listening to a (younger) co-worker's horror story about the pain involved in recovery I was quite nervous. However, I must be the exception to the rule as I can honestly say that I did not suffer any pain. In fact, what I felt was "discomfort" and NO PAIN. I followed all of my doctor's advice - bed rest for 48 hours, icing, and NO ACTIVITY. I did this on a Thursday so I could have essentially a four day weekend to recover. I must admit that when I did try and do too much, my body reminded me and I quickly laid out to recover. I did not even have to take the pain killers they prescribed. I took one the night of the procedure figuring that once the anesthesia wore off I would be rudely awakened by the pain I had read about. However, nothing arrived. I waited for the first two days expecting the pain to emerge but again, nothing. I did experience more discomfort in the form of pressure when returning to working and sitting for long periods of time. However, once I got up and walked around the pressure disappeared. After my pain-free recovery, I got curious and did some research on line to find similar cases. The only thing I can point to is the type of vasectomy I received. I did not receive the type where two incisions are made, one on each side of the scrotum. My procedure involved the single incision at the base of the penis. I read that this is a newer form of vasectomy and recovery is easier. If that is the case then I can attest to that since I am fully recovered after two weeks with no ill affects. Good luck gentlemen.
About 4 hours post op and off the ice for the moment. The injections were initially the worst part until we got to the second side. The first side went very well and the only pain was at the injection and sutures. The other side hurt like holy hell and I felt like I had been kicked in the stones with pain shooting out all over. After the vas was cauterized and everything put back together it felt better, but the ride home hurt. Bags of frozen mixed veggies and a pain pill have made the process better.
