I , a man, have also been experiencing numbness in my face after orgasm. Sometimes in the fingertips.
After a great deal of research, i have come to the conclusion that it has to do with chemical balance in the Hypothalamus and possibly Thalamus after orgasm.
The Hypothalamus is involved in sensory input and emotional response especially in connection with the sex response.
Numbness in the face may indicate neural confusion due to chemical transmitters or hormones produced at the time of Orgasm.
This is most likely normal.
However It could possibly also be an indicator of a nutrient deficiency, chemical imbalance or remotely possible neural dysfunction due to some other attributing factor.

After reading most of these entries I've assumed most of you are female and also if these are just intense orgasms.
Remember to get limber, have plenty of cool water and plenty of ventilation.

this happens from breathing rapidly and heavily. doesnt necessary mean you're reaching orgasm .. sometimes it happens to me before im even close.
just calm down and dont breath as heavily, which is controllable if you think about it.

23 male.
I've had the numbness feeling for the first time to it's most extreme about 2 years back after going down on at the time my gf for about 1.5 hours. From my experience the first time is the worst if triggered fully because the best way it came off as is as if a stroke victim. My arms completely numb below my elbors, mouth very hard too move and tingly like i've been out in the cold too long, similar idea with my feet, my eyes rolling back, and the most intense feeling of pleasure i have ever felt in my life.
I have been able to make this happen when with a partner and by myself in many different positions with one common element rapid breathing and in terms of stimulation physically not too much (ie not during sex) or mentally where you have to work with your imagination and not just use something like porn. Yes it is possible to orgasm (at least for the guy) when in that state, but only in early stages of it.. when it gets too intense i find it impossible to get there.
All in all my friend's explanation sounded like it made sense. (I myself haven't tried hard drugs) but from what what i told her about the way it feels and the experience overall, first thing she asked me was if i tried "e" (extacy). (ps every one of the experiences were absolutely sober) I didn't believe her, but i looked it up and a lit of things add up. The original drug was engineered on the chemical naturally created by the human brain, the difference between the two is that the naturally produced one breaks down much faster and does cause such a horrible crash afterward because it is perfectly pure.
The rapid breathing combined with the high level of pheromones released externally (especially if you're with a partner who's pheromones would effect you a lot more by definition), high level endorphins in the body and higher heart rate would result in the brain being flooded by them (and oxygen) which i guess could cause the production of that chemical in your brain.. on the other hand looking at the symptoms one of which include more sensitive taste for things like cheese, fruits and wines (which i have checked does happen).. even in the way of experience the consecutive experiences are never quite the same as the first couple you will have (much like the way any other drug works, legal or otherwise)
But this is only from my limited knowledge, assumptions and guesswork. I'd be more then interested if anyone has further input!!

Couple of points in reply to other posts:
1. The fact that it happens on your back does not necessarily have to do with blood flow. Think physiology, for women most of the feel good spots can be most easily reached and stimulated when the woman is on her back.
2. You might be able to write that off as just "their" type of orgasm for women, when about men? This feeling is completely dissociated with actual physical orgasm for men, could happen at the same time, but not either as result of the first. And as such it is not what would go under, at least, the normal definition of an orgasm.
For myself for example, 23 male (i made the long post above) my first and most extreme experience, lasted about 10 minutes after giving a long oral session (with female) and i was writhing on the bed from the sheer pleasure of it while at the same time not being hard whatsoever. (my partner was concerned the 1st time, but i was just fine, and am very healthy and active, so i doubt it's anything that would be an obvious result of some kind of unhealthy lifestyle)

I went to doctor because of my numbness and after a few test and MRI they told me I have Multiple Sclerosis.
Male - 21. I was sat up receiving oral yesterday when this happened to me. I didn't ejaculate but felt like I had. I was more worried about my head and arms however as they were completely numb and my head was buzzing. I wasn't sure if it was some epic headgasm or I just had a minor stroke or something.
My experience seems very similar to the original post. I just had my first two sexual experiences this week, and in both encounters my hands and face had a pins and needles sensation, almost like being on nitrous oxide. The second instance was more extreme than the first time, and my arms became numb up to my elbows, as well as my entire face. The numbness creeps outward the longer the encounter, and took approximately ten to fifteen minutes to subside. Unlike the original post, I totally lost my erection each time and did not climax at any point. This has happened to me while my partner was going down on me, during vaginal intercourse (while I was in top position), and while I was going down on them. I'm in decent physical shape, not overweight at all. I don't believe I was breathing rapidly when this occurred, and as I recall I was taking very deep, slow breaths.
This has nothing to do with sex, but I had sudden numbness in my face and hands and was very worried about it.
I had been doing some heavy mountain biking today at the Kingdom Trails in VT, I rode for 3 hours, actual riding as my computer only counts when my wheels are spinning. I hadn't done much biking yet this year and found myself very tired and exhausted, and I mean very exhausted. I made my way off the trails and got to the car, about 15 minutes later my hands started becoming numb (while driving) and then progressed to my face and got to the point of paralysis. I was fortunate enough to get our and let my passenger drive.
I was not even close to being aroused on the trails but it may have to do with where all my blood was flowing for an extended period of time. Also it took time after being at rest for symptoms to develop. I wonder if it may still be related tho.

Female, 22.
I think it's safe to say you're not abnormal if you're feeling pins and needles. Whether in your face and hands, feet, thighs or hips someone out there knows what you're talking about. When I'm about to cum my hips get really tense and usually my hands go numb if someone's going down on me. If you're so worried go check it out, otherwise try to relax and enjoy yourself.. take a breather in between if you have to. Oh yeah, don't forget to return the favour =)

I came to this topic because it was pointed it out to me.
My friend has the same reactions all the women here describe, and then some more.
I have many women in my life who experienced this symptoms and I feel I can bring some light into the topic.
There are several stages or reactions a woman can experience during lovemaking.
They are usually built up on a number of aspects such as: the ability of the woman to enjoy love making, the level of sensitivity she has, the skill of her lover and, very importantly in most of the cases, the length of the act in itself.
As many of you pointed out, when the prelude is longer rather then shorter, the erotic energy is much bigger and that leads to an ever increased intensity of sensations. This intensity is just one of the factors that creates the reactions in your body.
Just like someone wrote before me, these contractions come as a manifestation of internal tension. Tensions that we are mostly unaware of simply because they lay under the radar of the conscious mind. Tensions can be emotional, mental, physical.
Lovemaking is the most deep and powerful purifying process we can engage ourselves in. Therefore, when making love, you get to release allot of the tensions and stresses. And that release has nothing to do with ejaculation. Just the very act of being very intimate generates such processes.
There are several levels of intensity and of reactions that one can experience during love making and they generally come in this order:
1) Tingly sensation
2) Numbness
3) Contractions or stiffness
4) Convulsions
5) Crying*
X) Bliss
*One amendment to this order is crying, which can occur anytime, at any point and/or at any level as described above.
The more you make love, the longer you make love, the more the stiffness and numbness decrease and the more the pleasure, the joy and the Light that you experience will increase.
As you move upwards from the first 4 steps, as they are less and less present, the more the Bliss becomes a natural state.
The higher steps which I am going to list under are above step 5) Crying
5) Crying
6) Sensation of Light
7) Floating
8) Loss of contact with the space around you and loss of perception of time
9) Feeling of expansion to gigantic limits, with an inner state of peace and calmness like never experienced before
10) Complete melting into Bliss.
THIS is the REAL Orgasm.
All the steps from 6 and up can be described by many women as orgasm. But as you can see and as many of you know, there are several types of orgasm. The clitoridian one is the "cheapest" and least intense one.
One can reach the higher levels of Orgasm only through deep complete penetrations and mostly when the cervix of the woman is touched and stimulated for extended periods of time.
The Orgasms from level 6-7 and up usually lasts for minutes and in some cases even go to extended lengths of 20-30-50 minutes.
This is when your orgasm is transformed and is not a sexual experience anymore but can become a mystical one.
That is what the mystics would call meditation.
So threat not but rejoice.
Stiffness and numbness shows you that you are on the right track and that there is allot of bliss and joy ahead of you.
Enjoy and welcome the experience that you get as you know that the "scary" stiffness is only but temporary and actually represents a landmark in your life.

Like a few other posters, I experienced something like this recently and found this post through a search. A girl was providing oral stimulation after a long buildup: Hands start to go tingly like the circulation is cut off, but it is a pleasurable tingle instead of a painful one. Then it starts in my sinus cavity behind my nose and in my lips. Soon it changed from a tingle to a heavy buzz and I can't move my fingers out of rigidity or make facial expressions. There was no traditional climax to speak of though I had the distinct feeling afterward of having a body orgasm. Incredibly satisfying.
I might have been a bit concerned if it were the first time experiencing the buzz, but I've experienced it in a meditation setting where there was no sexual stimulation (or visual, auditory, etc) to speak of - just sitting. We were taught to relax and observe when it happens, so when it happened in the bedroom this helped considerably with any anxiety. I checked to make sure my posture wasn't causing any circulation issues first of course.
Curiously enough, the mental experience during the sexually stimulated buzz was very different than the meditative one. Maybe it's just the physical part of tapping into some other state, don't know really. There are a lot of other states which distinctly do not have this buzz.
Largely posting this to alleviate concerns regarding stroke and hyperventilation. The buzzing during meditation is expected and there are various descriptions and supposed causes for it. There are no strange breathing techniques to alter blood pH or sitting postures which limit circulation that are required for this experience to occur - it can be achieved with a variety of techniques.
So if this is happening to you remember that it apparently happens to plenty of people. Relax and enjoy it.
I experienced this during my first and second time. I wasn't worried as I experienced this once during a medical attack and was told it was hyperventilation. My hnands got locked into straight fingers and I could move them and my mouth was locked into a sort of down-lipped circle. My face also started tinlging. Not enough oxygen is getting to the extremities and face and this is why it happens. Make sure you regulate your breathing and im sure youll see an improvment.
