Pretty unique isn't it?!  I'm female and have 3 kidneys too and 3 ureters.  2 of my left kidneys have grown together and do 40% of the work.  My right kidney does 60% of the work.  I used to have high fevers and constant infections as a child up to about age 7.  I was a bed wetter until the age of 12 or so.  When I was married I somehow forgot to mention my anatomy to my hubby.  When it came up in conversation, he was shocked and couldn't believe I "withheld this key piece of me".  We laughed and he jokingly said "what else don't I know about you!?".  I hadn't really had any more problems until recently.  I'm 32 years old and thought I had a really bad UTI.  All the same symptoms (10 weeks of needing to pee and pressure on my bladder).  After 3 different antibiotics, ultrasounds, pee samples, blood testing, full vaginal exam, and a CT scan, we found I have kidney stones!  3 of them!  1 in each of my left kidneys and 1 in my bladder which has grown almost to the size of a marble.  My now urologist said that multiple collecting systems like mine are rare but they do see someone every few years walk in their office.  I have to have surgery (1.5 hours) and will go under in a week.  They are going to shoot a dye up me and scope to look around and try to laser the big kidney stone in my bladder and then see if they can reach one of the ones in my left kidneys.  I'm a little nervous but I understand this is a common procedure.  The most uncomfortable part is supposed to be the stent they put in me to hold my ureter open to allow fluid to pass.  It will be removed 1 week following surgery.  Anyhow, I mention all of this because my urologist said it takes years for kidney stones to form and with my anatomy (multiple collecting systems), I am more apt to get them.  Going forward, I am to drink lots and lots of water.  Glad to see there's others out there will multiple kidneys.  Thanks for sharing!  A pretty unique fact you can tell folks about yourself.  :)

I'm the last one that posted (32 yr. old female w/ 3 kidneys and 3 ureters) and oh my goodness, I must not have seen that 2nd post. You poor thing! I am so sorry for all that you went through. I can't imagine the fright and uncertainty you must of felt, and I'm so sorry for your pain. I'm really happy to hear you're doing well and running marathons! I'm a runner myself and am eager to get back to a regular routine once this surgery is done and over with. Thanks for sharing your story. Take care.

DO NOT remove your third kidney just because it's there. You are still young and you or a family member may need it in the future. What if 2 of your kidneys fail? You'll still have a third. What if someone in your family needs it? If you're a match you can save the life of a close relative. It is NOT too strange to have three kidneys. You are blessed and remember it. Believe me, you were born with 3 kidneys for a reason.

There is a name for this. I have 1 1/2 kidneys on right side and 1 kidney on left side.Does anyone know what the name of this is? I had lots of problems and infections when I was young. By the time I was 40, I seemd to grow out of it. No problems after that...

Just wondering if you have children? I have been trying to get pregnant for years and many alternative practitioners have indicated that I have kidney problems. My dad has 3 kidneys and am wondering if I have the same. What tests did you have done to determine whether you have 3 kidneys?

I have had kidney infections since I was very young.Got my first stone when I was 23.Saw several different doctors because the stones kept develeping. Finally I have a uroligist that said I have 3 kidneys.I have had propably 10 CT's and 5 MRI's,ultrasounds and other tests and she was the first to tell me at age 44.So far I have had 18 stones in my extra kidney and it has so much scar tissue in it that it hurts all the time. What I don't understand is this kidney is smaller, damaged and causes pain but she doesn't want to take it out?? She says it is rare and amazing how it works. The first one she has seen.I just want it gone! My other 2 kidneys are healthy and have never had a stone.I am confused!

I was born with three kidneys.  Didn't know it until after my third child.  Did not understand why I had so may infections and Doctor I had would not listen to me when I told him I thought it wa my kidneys. It got so bad I could hardly walk across the floor.  My husband insisted i go to a Uroligist and when I did he found the problem right awa.  I was being poisoned by them.  He did surgery and removed the upper kidney, they were like a kidney bean with two different sections. They were able to save the bottom section and that was in 1974. I've had maybe 3 infections since then., My mother had them, also my sister. My sister was a big drinker and has had to have both removed.  I found it was most common in females.  I've had my daughters checked.  They are fine.

Hi there - like you, I have 3 kidneys and 3 ureters, 1 regular size and 2 smaller.  I'm a 57 year old male, and only found out I had 3 7 years ago.  I had no health troubles up to that time, in fact I was unusually healthy and athletic, never missed a day of school, etc.  After many tests, CT scans, ultrasounds, and finally a cystoscopy, my urology specialist told me "you've had 3 kidneys for the last 50 years and you've been fine.  Drink plenty of water and forget you ever came to see me."

I still feel great and would be interested in learning how to donate a kidney to help someone else.  Please let me know if you have any info on this.

I also have 3 kidneys, found out when I was 17yrs old because I bruised my kidney and spleen. I'm 24 now no problems doctor told me it could cause problems in the future and need to be removed. One positive I seem to be able to process alcohol faster, I can pass a breathalyzer after 4beers and a shot

I was diagnosed with 3 kidneys when I was 8 which was discovered due to recurring cystitis. I have 2 smaller ones in a 69 position on one side and a normal size kidney on the other. Because of the pain of urinating, I often wet myself at this young age as I was afraid to go to the toilet. I then refused to drink anything which made the functioning of the kidneys worse. Since I figured out that liquid was my friend instead of the enemy, I have kept myself well hydrated which seems to be the key. Unlike the other people that have posted here, I do not process urine quickly- I can go for days without needing to pee- this might be learned behaviour however, stemming from my young years. I am now 47. I have had a few twinges in my kidneys over the years but they have gone pretty quickly when I have drank more. The good news is that I have never had to use a port-a-loo (going to musical festivals was certainly enhanced by this!) and I have never had a hangover. I was fairly sure that my 3 kidneys had something to do with this and then Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet said in an interview a couple of years ago that he had 3 kidneys and had never had a hangover. As you will have noticed- there is very little medical information about this and most Dr's in both the UK and USA (where I lived for 20 years) don't really know what to do with me when problems arise. I would advise to stay away from powdered drinks- crystal light or nesquick powdered milkshake mix for example as they seemed to make it worse, though everyone has different kidney function within their 3, and my problems might not be the same as anyone elses. Hope that helps a little

I too have three kidneys .. all three functioning normally .   I found out after having a pyelogram (Pyelogram (or pyelography or urography) is a form of imaging of the renal pelvis and ureter.   I was born this way and I suppose I will meet my maker this way :-)
