I also have 3 kidneys. 2 normally functioning kidneys and an additional, smaller one on the left side. I was diagnosed when I was 4 and almost died due to the fact that the 3rd kidney was working backwards and slowly poisoning me. I had surgery when I was 8 (I believe the first of it's kind) to move a tube to correct the way it worked and have not had a single problem since. I don't know much else about it since I was so young but I know that it was not possible for me to survive removing the 3rd kidney. The doctor who diagnosed me was Dr. Daley in Omaha, NE. If anyone knows about this type of disease it would be him. The only symptoms I can recall are pain behind my knees, lower back pain and I would hallucinate.

Wrong! I was born with 3 kidneys and had the same surgery December 10, 2001. I was only 3. I could have died if they did not do the surgery. I still have major problems every once in a while. But, i was a twin. The twin died when it was 1 week old in the womb. It gave me it`s other kidney. It is VERY RARE to have 3 KIDNEY`S. I wish I didn`t. Now, i am 13 and very healthy. With problems every once in a blue moon. So, don`t say it was the very first surgery they did with that kind of medical procedure. I get VERY VERY VERY VERY MAD WHEN SOMEBODY SAYS THAT.

i was born with 4 kidneys and ureters I only have one blatter so it has caused me problems my whole life, now they say I have scarring on my left kidneys and that I may have Bergers disease and that Ive had it since I was a child now they say It can make me have kidney failer. So no matter have many you have if you dont take care of them and ask the right questions you could end up with none. Im not a drinker and I dont do any kinds off drugs but I my still ended up on dialysis and by the way this is what I do for a living.Im the one that does the dialysis treatment for renal failure I have 1000's of patients that see and the last place I want to be is in that chair. I see everyday the way these people live now dont get me wrong some people do very well on dialysis and others dont,so whether you have 1,2,or 3 or even 4 kidneys talk to your doctors and take care of them.

I am 61. Been living with 3 kidneys and separate ureters all my life. No problems. Actually, I think I have been healthier because of them. Faster filteration of the bad stuff. No pain, no infections.

I am 65. I have 3 normal size functioning kidneys with 3 urethers. Extra kidney is on right side, side by side.  My paternal grandfather also had 3 kidneys but 1 was not functioning.  I have always had blood in my urine.  I am diabetic and now in the process of finding out if I have kidney disease.  My right side feels like someone is punching me in my right kidney.

I'm 57, and have 3 kidneysand 3 urethers which are normal in size and are functioning very well. Never get UTI's. Was only discovered due to a stone in my bladder. I am a very healthy person, thank the lord. No medical problems. Which all a safe and happy life with your 3 kidneys. No need to remove them, unless they bring you medical problems.

I also have 3 separate fully functioning kidneys with their own ureters.  I am 57 years old and found out when I was 24 and had my one and only kidney stone.  I have 3 children all natural deliveries with no drugs.  I must have a very accommodating bladder because I can go for long term with out having to pee!  I consider it an honor and continue to enjoy my bragging rights :)    I seriously know I am blessed.

It is kinda nice knowing that if a family member ever need renal replacement, the chances are good that I can help. It is also cool hearing the reaction you get when you tell people that you have three kidneys. The thing is, I had a back x-ray because of an injury just to make sure that the spine was where it was supposed to be. It was, but two days later the doctors office called me at home to see if I was aware that I have three kidneys and that they can see 3 stones. One of which is the size of a walnut.  That was three years ago. So, I have that to look forward to. It would be just fine with me if they stay attached to the kidney wall for the rest of my life. I carry promethazine every where I go, everytime I go.

I was 6 month pregnant when doctors detected that my baby was having problems with the right kidney. Once she born they did a sonogram and a VCUG and after seen different urologist they determined that she has three kidneys, two right one grow on top of the other. The problem is that the third kidney is not fully formed and the uterus is really big connected directly to the exit of the bladder. This extra kidney/uterus brings the urine back and forth all the time so my baby is always dripping with high risk of infection. She is taking antibiotic since she borne until she is old enough to have it removed. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I was born with 3 kidneys 35 years ago. I had to have my valves replaced when I was 5 years old, but that had NOTHING to do with the number of kidneys I have. I still have 3 kidneys. I have never had a UTI or bladder infection. I've had a healthy 9lb son and I'm still perfectly fine. My kidneys work great. Just because you have an extra one doesn't mean you have to have one removed. Only if a doctor tells you you need to.

Wow there are many more of you than I expected!  I am 60 years old and found out that I have FOUR full sized functioning kidneys when I was a teenager.  I had an extremely high temperature and was hospitalized.  After an xray (the tech said I must have moved during the xray) and then another xray (I promise I did not move) they were discovered.  I had a kidney infection that was quickly treated with antibotics.  I have never had any further problems and even tho I go the the ladies room more often than most I feel blessed.  If a family member ever needs a kidney I will be there will bells on!

I am a 58 year old woman with 3 kidney's also, which I found as the result of a series of severe urinary tract infections which would reappear nearly as soon as the anti-biotics were finished from the last infection. I understand it's an anomaly, and my surgeon told me that whenever there is a physical anomaly, we are subject to infections - but that one a year should be within "acceptable" limits. With age I've improved, and I have a bladder that's worth writing home about - but is probably unrelated to the 3 kidneys :)

I have 3 kidneys and uterers. I have had nothing but problems all my life. Bladder and kidneys infections left and right. Plus the reflux to where the "flaps" left the urine recirculate through the kidneys instead of "cleaning" it. Does anyone know where or whom to talk to. I am tired after 36 years of this.[/quote
Try Doctor Bauer, Bostons Childrens Hospital, MA. My daughter has 3 kidneys and has nothing but trouble, and all the urologists here only see kids 18 and over! He helped us after 4 years of pure hell, utis, back pains and headaches.
Good Luck

I have 3 kidneys and was successfully treated as a child with simple sulphur drugs - no problems for 35 years now, of course everyone is different but you need to find a doctor who can apply simple logic and not just the latest treatment fashion.
