I just had this same thing happen. I got food stuck and had to go to the emergency room to get scoped. I am also allergic to poultry meat, not eggs. I am glad you posted this. The Dr. told me it was a result of acid reflux and sent me home with a prescription for Zantac (which gave me hives incidentally) and told me to schedule a procedure to have my esophagus expanded via a balloon. Thank you for sharing this story...now I believe he was wrong. I just learned of an allergy to chicken, I always thought I was alone in this!

I glad I came across this post. I ate poultry until one Thanksgiving (age 23) I had the following symptoms: Pain in my stomach, excessive Post nasal drip (histamine reaction, I googled it) which ends up either getting swallowed or I have to spit out as it exacerbates the pain in stomach. I had to vomit and tons of mucus came out.

I recently had food get stuck in my esophagus (although I could still breath) and had to get knocked out at the E.R. and have a scope put down my throat and have the food dislodged. From a previous post I learned that this esophagus issue may have been caused by my allergy. I miss eating poultry!

I'm also allergic to poultry. Not eggs. Definitely turkey, chicken and duck. Haven't tried pheasant yet, and at this point, am probably going to skip it. I think it started after the birth of my last child (when I was 31). I ate poultry my entire life with no problems, then I kept getting sick all the time. Originally it was about 2-4 hrs after I ingested it, with the saliva issues, migraines, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Took me forever to make the connection. Even though I started reacting earlier and earlier, and added difficulty breathing, and feelings of panic (aka heart palpitations?) I didnt consider poultry until I was shopping with my husband and he was going to grab some turkey legs so I could make turkey and wild rice soup, and I commented "no, I threw up last time we had that, I am not feeling it right now." He says: "you always throw up with turkey." Huh. Tested it out a few times after that at thanksgiving. Two different dinners later, and I thought I was dying. Went to the doctor, who didn't believe it was a thing, but nicely made me an appointment with an allergist. If I turned out to be crazy I should make another appt with her lol. Turns out I'm officially not crazy. I'm also allergic to clams...also new. And I carry benadryl and an epipen everywhere. Lastly I would like to take a moment to mourn: chicken soup with homemade egg noodles, duck with a cranberry glaze, chicken Tikka masala, and foie gras. (Yes, I was a monster)

I also have an allergy to poultry. Mainly white meat chicken and turkey, but I am starting to think that dark meat is starting to affect me, too.

It started with mild stomach pain, swelling, and bloating, and bad gas. I probably had symptoms most of my life, but they were so mild to begin with, I didn't notice.

Once I got off of eating chicken, I started feeling better. After a few mknths, I tried eating a small piece of chicken sausage, and had stomach pains for a week. So after that I started being really good about not eating chicken. A couple of weeks ago I was a a friend's house, and without knowing, ate sausage that contained chicken in it. About 30 minutes afterwards, I started getting a bad headache, and got really cold. Later I was freezing, and the headache turned into a migrane, and I was physically shaking, and couldn't get warm. Then the nausea set in, and I eventually threw up everything. After that, I started getting the thick saliva coming up, but I eventually started getting warm again, and feeling better.

I want to thank everyone who has replied to this post, because it validated what I have always felt to be true. I too have had someone tell me it's all in my head, and it infuriated me. Maybe someday there will be a cure for this!

Does anybody else get crazy annoyed that everything is becoming made with chicken nowadays? I bought a stick of "beef jerky" once, took one bite and IMMEDIATELY knew something was off. I look at the ingredients and sure enough- mechanically separated chicken. It's ridiculous. I suffer from most of the symptoms everyone has mentioned, but the absolute worst for me is a extreme, and I mean EXTREME bouts of heartburn and indigestion. Combined with the swelling of the throat I've almost made a few trips to the ER. The heartburn and indigestion is unbearable. I've just grown to avoid white meat altogether. I'm very intrigued that a few people mentioned being mostly allergic to either dark or white meat. I can't eat either. Actually typed "white meat allergy" into google tonight because I'm currently having a rough time after eating some fish for dinner. Fish has always been kind of hit or miss with the allergy, so I eat it once in a blue moon, but the pain I feel tonight might keep me heading towards ever eating fish again.

I've had an allergic reaction to chicken and other poultry since I was little, but the only symptom that I had was chest pain. Over this past summer I ate some kielbasa but was unaware that it contained turkey, afterwards my eyes were red, itchy and my vision became blurry. My whole body became red and extremely rashy and I couldn't breathe. I took a cool shower thinking it would help (that was dumb) but it got even worse... I felt like my skin and eyes were on fire. I ran downstairs to my mom and showed her my reaction luckily my moms friend and our neighbor was a nurse and was over for a few drinks with her and my dad. I showed my neighbor my back and face, she said that I was burning and that she hadn't seen anything like it before. I was quickly instructed to take some benadryl, about 20 to 30 minutes of hell passed before I felt better. I always told my parents that I was allergic to poultry but they never believed me up until that time.

At least I'm not the only one with this odd reaction.

This sounds like the source of my allergy since I never had a problem with chicken or turkey (white meat only) until I started taking Zantac for reflux. Thanks for the information.

I am now 44 years old and have exactly the same systems as you describe. I have also found "chicken fat" in crazy places like Baked Lays BBQ potato chips, so beware there as well. I am allergic to eggs and all dairy products. I suggest parents also beware of the MMR shot and make sure their doctor knows of the poultry allergy!

I have this same problem, and I also developed it after years of eating chicken. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to stop this?

Im also allergic to chicken and turkey, but Im able to eat duck fine as well as pheasant, infact i preffer it , although it is more costly. I have had the allergy since my teens, I think I ate too much in my younger years as a kid and that has lead to a build up of a protein found in chicken and turkey. I get a heat rash (hives) after just a small amount of it. It does cause a large amount of amusement when Im offered chicken and I say Im allergic, most think Im having a laugh and dont belive me, I just tell them to 'google' it.

What I would like to know from others if its safe to eat goose, quite fancy trying some for Christmas this year, but dont want to buy it if Im going to be all itchy and spotty over the holidays lol

Wow, I thought I was the only one in the world with this excat same thing, my symptoms are excatly as u stated it is a horrible feeling, I have don't some experimenting with what helps and if u happen to get the feeling and are able to get something down ur throat which sometimes it depends on how much chicken/turkey u ingest, then a quick dose of Benadryl helps with the swelling and it lessens the horrible feeling that seems like it lasts for hours!! I am glad I am not the only one that has this allergy and it has even horrible cause I too have not always been allergic it has just happened in last 10/15 years. Would love to know what and how this is caused

I am also allergic to poultry. It runs in my family. My older brother and his two boys are also. My daughters is too. I'm 200 lbs 6'1 size has nothing to do with it. And we are from Maine.

Also watch out for the flu shot. It is made from eggs. I found that most soups are made with chicken stock so be careful of those as well.

I completely avoid Slim Jims. They also have the mechanically separated chicken. Although I thing if I could it chicken that would put me off. I have been having reactions since I was 6. I have been to the ER once, but as I get older the allergy gets worse. My throat closes and feels itchy. My eyes water, chest hurts and lips swell. If you have the allergy DO NOT try alligator or frog meat. Also avoid Chinese buffets. A lot of Chinese food has chicken in it. If you want still feel like your eating chicken, try the vegetarian versions. It's the only way I can have wings or nuggets. They are not bad. Chicken is used in everything because it's a cheap filler. Look for a frozen pepperoni pizza at the grocery store and you would be surprised at how many have chicken in them. Hot dogs are not all safe, however they seem to be selling more of the 100% beef ones now.
