Hi, im only 13 and i have 2 ingrown toenails and i think they're infected but im not sure. i've had them from almost 6 months and im really scared. I would go to the doctor but my parents dont even know about it. We're supposed to go on vacation in like 2 weeks so i really think i should tell them so i could get it fixed but i dont know how to tell them and i think i waited to long. I heard that the surgery really hurts too, and i've never had surgery before so im really, really, really, scared. Even if i did tell my parents, i might not be able to get them fixed because i heard it costs alot of money and like i sed, were about to go on vacation and we're getting a new car this summer so i dont think we'll have the money. I desperately need advice, please help! :'(

Try going to a podiatrist instead of a doctor, the podiatrist is normally better and will be able to do it in about 15 mins in their normal room. They also tend to get a better shape on the nail and prevent it growing back in. I had a really nasty one and I had it taken out in 15 mins and havn't had a problem in almost a year. Try soaking it in the salty water as another user suggested (as hot as possible) and then try and cut some of the nail away with CLEAN scissors, make sure that you keep the areas clean and keep your feet as dry and sweat free to prevent any more inflammation which will perpetuate the problem. But see a health care specialist if you can't get it out, as pain in your toes can alter your walking pattern and cause issues in your legs, such as in knees, ankles and hips. And a chronic inflammatory reaction can do huge damage to the body.

I'm currently researching this subject as I have an appointment for a consultation with a specialist coming up for both my big toenails, on reccomendation from a podiatrist. the second one isn't as bad as the first but they said may as well sort it at the same time. both go all the way down the nail and this is thought to be because of the shoes I used to wear with narrow toe ends and heels high enough to push my toes against the ends.
Since the first nail is painfully infected could you give me any advice on what to expect?

If you have that many procedures, why dont you just have it permanitly removed with the chemical? i mean its so much easier cause its only one shot more so that your nervers in the knuckles dont hurt, but its alot easier and you wont have to go back again. Me myself had 5 ingrowns on one toe for about 5 yeras, so about once a year, and the last one they just got rid of it for good, and now my ohter toe has one and im getting it permantly taken care of. Im only 14 and , i always fell nervous about the shots, cause i sometimes cry, but after the shots, i love watching it, ha its kinda cool

hey im 21 and i have had numerous ingrown toenails on both big toes and have had both of them permanently removed.the most recent being last week sept 14th.when i had the left toenail removed back in 2003 i did receive stitches but this time i didnt.i have no regrets about having the procedure done.at first i was conscious that people would notice i had no toenail but not one person took any bit of notice.i would rather have no toenail than an ingrown one.i know permanent removal isnt suitable for everyone but i would advise people who get recurring ingrown toenails to have the nail matrix(root)removed just like me.i hope this information helps.thanks.

Nothing better than a hot nurse :). Except the embarrassment of her cutting out your puss filled infected toe. Having both of mine done today, I hate needles. :P

To EVERYONE reading this DO NOT go to the podiatrist it's costly and ultimately pointless, see your local GP here in Australia I had mine done by a GP and it was FREE. Having a podiatrist do it costs $900, don't waste your cash it's a simple procedure.

In reply to Guest. I Just had ONE of mine taken out yesterday, the needle isn't as bad as it's put out to be, kinda feels like it's sucking blood or flesh out but apart from that it's fine. The procedure REALLY is painless, but be sure to have panadol at the ready about half an hour after procedure, mine is really hurting now.

Oh and whatever you do: DO NOT LOOK AT YOUR FOOT. LET THE DOCTOR BANDAGE IT FIRST, I KNOW A FEW PEOPLE WHO FAINTED.
Cheers!

P.S Unfortunately I didn't have a hot nurse.

well what you can do is just wrap it in a dressing and do not go in swimming pool water
put your toe in a bath tub and bathe it for about 30mins and put this special cream it wrap it up in a dressiing and take your medicine from the doctor even if it tastes horrible still take it beacause you dont want an injection and your toenail token off do you?
but anyway do what i did and you wont have another ingrown toenail again because i did that treatment an dit worked for me

I had a partial toenail removal. Somehow a piece of my toenail branched off to be alone, it took a left instead of sticking with the rest of my toenail :'( . Over time it got worse, and it began to feel like a had a small shard of glass digging into my big toe. I tried digging around to get it out with no luck and over a period of weeks it got really infected. To make a long story short I ended up doing the partial toenail removal, plus they had to cut the side of my big toe open a little to get that "shard" i was feeling. When he was done with that he said he was going to burn some of my skin in that area (don't remember why). So now I'm one week post procedure...and here's where my questions comes in......Is it typical that the joint where I received my blockers is still tender and a little purple? Also, I'm still swelling, I can't wear shoes or put much pressure on my foot because of the swelling. When I do bear weight on it, it feels like my toe is going to burst (from the pressure). Even with keeping my foot elevated it still swells. Am I doing something wrong? Any resposes would be tremendously appreciated! %-) %-) %-) (PS I'm prediabetic)

Hey, I have a Ingrown Toenail on both toes and i want to get rid of them. Im not sure what to do. I have been using teatree oil, or atleast im pretty sure it's called that. For awhile that didnt work so i moved on to using Cottonwool under the nail on the side where the infected area is. and im thinking about getting surgicaly removed i have read the whole 4 pages. Alot of people have been saying that the Needles hurt?... im not sure what to do like is it worth it or should i keep trying the cottonwool??? I am 13 turning 14

you see your case is one of those which of course as you said has been growing over the years and if it is you need to have a full out operation. i had it a while ago and it wasnt scary at all. you see what the doctor does is he does pull out your toenail  because he has to permanently kill the bacteria and whatnot that is causing the ingrown toenail. he will get rid of it with a very strong chemical. of course during the entire operation you will be asleep and probably put under general anesthesia. when you wake up you will be in the recovery room. YES this is a real operation and it is a very serious matter but dont worry its not a bad experience in fact i found that it can be quite relaxing in the O.R. they had pleasant music on and even though it was extremely cold inside they put heated blankets on top of you to keep you warm and comfortable. the anesthesia is also very reliable i had a very pleasant nap during the operation. They will put stitches but do not worry they will take them out about two weeks after the procedure. You wont be able to dirve and when you get home from the hospital you will need time to recover from the anesthesia because you'll feel very sleepy and dizzy but thats alright if you start to vomit its probably just another side effect from the anesthesia. When you get the stitches removed don't worry its mostly a painless procedure you might feel a little tug or slight pull but thats alright nothing seriously painful. If you live in Los Angeles, California i highly recommend you see Doctor Alfred Glover for the procedure hes a very skilled podiatrist and surgeon and hes the one that i see if i have problems with my foot and the one who worked on my toe. Not to mention hes very kind and funny so you won't feel at all nervous when you have the operation and in fact very relaxed and calm. so if you live in the LA area i HIGHLY recommend that you see him if you are still having problems with your ingrown toenail or any problems with your foot in fact.
